Reyes’ Agent Says First Choice Is To Stay With Mets

Charles Hollon of Gotham Baseball spoke with Chris Leible, the agent for Jose Reyes who offered up some words of hope regarding his client’s preference to stay with the Mets.

“I think Jose is one of those rare players that feeds off the energy of the fans, he loves the fans here in New York and I believe that feeling is mutual.” Leible said. “Jose also has a keen sense of his history here with the Mets, he’d love to be a Met for life.

“Time will tell.”

When pressed, Chris stated that he really doesn’t have a sense of where Jose will sign for 2012 and beyond.

“We’re going into it with eyes wide open, His first choice has always been to stay here with the Mets.”

It was interesting to learn that Leible once interned with the Mets in the scouting department. Check out the full story, it’s a very good read.

Speaking of the scouting department, this:

The Padres are expected to name Chad MacDonald as their new vice president and assistant general manager, a major-league source told FOXSports.com.

MacDonald had most recently worked as the amateur scouting director of the New York Mets. He will now replace Jason McLeod, who left his front-office post with the Padres to join Jed Hoyer in the Chicago Cubs front office.

Tommy Tanous is expected to replace MacDonald and has previously worked in the Mets organization as a special assistant.

  • Sandy, can you please sign jose reyes?? you can moneyball us all you want this year as long as you sign reyes.. hell, i’ll change my screen name to alex68<3sabers

    • Alex – Very funny. I’m right with you on this one.

  • Reyes’ first choice is to stay with the Mets… unless someone offers more money.

    • If someone offered you 25% more to leave your job wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t most people? Have you ever done what you are asking Reyes to do?

      • uhhh, no.. hellooooooooooooo CLIFF LEE last year left around 20 million to go to philly!! why is everything anbout the money!!!!
rangers were at 138 million and yankees at 144 million, and lee took 125 from the phillies why?? because he wanted to play in philadelphia!
come on, stop throwing stones as if reyes is a money hungry ball player! all he does is enjoy the game and have fun, who wouldn’t want a player like that on their team?? ahhhh, i know, the saber geeks!!!

        • I thought we agreed the other day that you would chat with the kiddie corps. and that I would chat with the adults?

          • so you don’t have a comeback for alex in other words.

Cliff Lee turned down more money, CC didn’t even give another team a chance, so yes it happens and with regularity.

            • See the below from MR. NJ. He (Lee) didn’t turn down more money.

              • I think not,

                http://articles.businessinsider.com/2010-12-14/sports/30085484_1_rangers-offer-free-agent-pitcher-jayson-werth

The Rangers were even going to offer MORE money. Besides there’s a difference what happens in real life with the real professionals then a character in a cardboard box

                • You mean the CC who had a 140 million dollar offer from the Yanks 3 years ago on the table for a month and didn’t even blink at it cause he was waiting for other teams to match or beat it because he wanted to stay in the NL,that CC.The CC who never got another offer except by the Brewers for 6 yrs and 100 Million and still didn’t take the 140 million from the Yanks until they blew everybody away with 160 millon, that CC.

Of course CC didn’t give another team a chance, what team is going to give him the equivalent of a one year extension at 30 million dollars.I’ll answer for you,no team.

                  • here’s many things were you wrong, CC sign a 7 year 161 million dollar deal, the brewers were the highest bidder at 100 million for 5 year, the MLBPA were not gonna allowed CC to sign with milwaukee because of the money difference. you can look it up, he waited as much as he could, the yankees offer 140 million at first and milwaukee up their offer to 100, then yankees offer 161 for 7 years with an opt out clause after the 3rd year. for him it wasn’t about the money either. it was more like the CBA not allowing it not to happen.

        • I think Lee is making more per year with the Phillies if what was reported at the time about what was offered was true.

I wrote a post at the time saying the following based on some of the reports at that time.

“The Yankees last offer was reportedly 6 years $132M with a player option for $16M in 7th year for a total of $148M over 7 years.

The Rangers last offer was reportedly 6 years $138M with an option for a seventh season.

If these numbers are accurate in the end Cliff Lee is making more per year with the Phillies $24M per year than he would of with the Rangers $23M per year or the Yankees $22M per year. If the vesting option is accurate Lee will wind up making $147.5M over 6 years rather than what he would of got with the Yankees $148M over 7 years. The Rangers option could of paid Lee more overall but without knowing the details of the option it’s hard to say by how much.”

          http://realdirtymets.com/2010/12/14/halladay-oswalt-hamels-and-lee-oh-my/

Since then though I have never followed up to see if anything came out to contradict some of the rumors at that time.

          • LoL, I think I set the record for saying “at that time”.

        • Alex I looked into it to see if there was anything new on the Lee signing and so far here is what I have found.

MLB.com has an article about the signing and in it the article says that Lee signed a 5 year $120M contract with a 6th yr vesting option that would increase the value to $135M. It goes on to say that the Yankees “offered Lee a six-year, $138 million contract with a vesting option that increased the value to $154 million”.

So that would still suggest that Lee is getting paid more per year with the Phillies than the Yankees. $22.5M per year for 6 years with the Phillies as opposed to $22M per year for 7 years with the Yankees.

          http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101213&content_id=16314600&vkey=news_mlb

          • I should note that you are correct Alex to say Lee took less because 5yr/$120M in the end is less that 6yr/$138M. By 1yr/$18M. The vesting options included the amount is even larger. 6yr/$135M is less than 7yr/$154M by 1yr/$19M.

I was looking at it per yr so in that sense he got paid more but ONLY in that sense. Lee left $18M to $19M and an extra year to sign with the Phillies.

            • Thats what Alex was getting at…It wasn’t the per year but the EXTRA year that Lee turned down to go to the Phillies.

              • True, like Alex said he did leave a year and the extra $18 to $20M. I was looking at it on a per year basis probably due to hearing at the time all the Lee loves Philly and took less stuff and looking to somehow discredit the notion that he did it cause he loves Philly when I wrote the post.

Damn you Phillies and your brotherly love :-)

                • MNJ, is all good, that was my point from the get go. is a big difference 154 million and 120-125 million. one more year and he would’ve been at 154 million. but…. he showed it wasn’t about the money.

      • I’m not blaming him. Hell, I live in TX cause I can make more and stretch my $$$ more than I could in NJ. I was just being snarky about that statement, as that is what everyone says who is hitting FA and is trying to look like they are a good guy and not about the money. I know I’d be about the money. Jose is hitting the lottery here.

        • Gotcha, I get your point now. Didnt mean to get snarky on you.

          • like water off a duck’s back. we’re all good. :)

        • If Jose is like almost all other players, you’ve nailed his attitude. His agent, Chris Leible, is spreading the charm words, but Jose is the man who will decide his own fate. Let’s remember, no agent or lawyer is going to say anything that will undercut Jose’s bargaining power for fear that he could wind up being sued by Jose. So I have some hope Jose had a role in the agent’s present views and statements toward the Mets.

    • Well hell I can offer him more money than the Mets have to date!

Hey Jose here is a BUCK! I just beat out the Mets offer for him!

      • It would be stupid for the Mets to start the offers. They want to wait to see what will be offered for him from other teams. To start the bidding war would be a dumb move. No one wants to start upping the price on Reyes so soon into the free agency process. He wants to get the big bucks but the Mets (and every other team) wants to get him for a reasonable price. It probably will take a long time for whatever deal he gets to develop. Teams are just starting their offseason work.

        • And what do they gain by waiting Guppy please tell us all what they get later they won’t get now!

  • JOSE!!! PLEASE STAY!!!

  • WHO CARES ANYMORE??Ownership doesn’t care.If they did they woukd have locked him up before he could declare free agency. The cardinals won the WS with a washed up Rafael Furcal at ss.The Mets need their regulars to stay healthy and add staring and relief pitching. That is much more important than giving a guy 20 mill with 2 bad legs to play ss.This whole situation is just not worth talking or blogging about anymore imho

    • the braves won the WS with jeff blauser in 1995 and his 211 BA. what is your point?!? 2 bad legs?? if this situation is not worth talking about it or blogging about it, then why you’re doing it here? not telling what to do but other than the owner being cheap and broke with financial issues, moneyball and reyes being a FA, what else is there to talk about as of right now?

  • If Jose really wants to stay here, and he signs elsewhere – he might love the fans and the energy but wants the money more.

Hard to blame any FA on that thinking, especially when you only get one shot at it in your prime years. I just hope the offer the Mets make is competitive enough to have him seriously consider it.

  • Until it happens; THERE IS STILL HOPE HE RESIGNS WITH US.

  • When Alderson said “Ruben Tejada will be our everyday shortstop if Jose Reyes signs with another club” (I read that in another article on this blog) I said to myself pencil in Tejada becausw Reyes will be with another club. I guess I read between the lines but this is how I interpreted his comment. There are a lot of clubs interested in Reyes and for some like the Nationals he may be the missing piece that gets them to the playoffs, and don’t rule out the Marlins that would like to open their new ballpark with Reyes and Guillen.

  • May I add that Reyes’ agent said his first choice was to stay with the Mets, NOT his only choice.

    • and the FO is on record as saying they hope to have him back.

sounds like a mutual love fest to me.

  • If Reyes’ first choice was to stay with the Mets then he would’ve at least listened to what the Mets had to offer when they approached him during the season.Even his wife and family urged him to listen to what the Mets had to say when it was reported the Mets were willing to offer him a 100 million dollar deal.

Reyes wanted to test free agency all along, this BS that the Mets are his first choice is just that BS.Then he goes on the DL twice and cost himself any chance at getting Crawford money. Now thw question is does anybody crack 100 million.

Jose has a right to test the free agent waters but don’t give me this BS line that the Mets are your first choice,if they were you would’ve at least listened to what they had to say mid season.Lots of players resign in season during their walk year.Lance Berkman signed an extension with St Louis in September instead of trying to cash in on the open market off of a great year. That’s a player who wants to stay with his current team. Not Jose.

    • And if Sandy had any intentions of signing him he would have done it last year when Reyes was ready to deal, not wait until Reyes said I don’t want distractions during the season!

      Cuts both ways joe!

      Sandy refused FIRST!
      Reyes refused SECOND!
      and now Sandy refused again!

Sandy leads the refusal to negotiate race 2-1!

      • Prove it!

        • You prove it wrong!

Are you trying to say that Sandy didn’t refuse to negotiate last off season?

          Sandy First!

Are you saying Reyes didn’t refuse to negotiate during the season?
          Reyes Second!

Are you saying Sandy is ready to negotiate now?
          WHERE IS THE OFFER?

          • Sandy refused 1st and Reyes 2nd,Okay you got that right. When did Sandy refuse again? You have no proof of that. Not making an offer and waiting for a market to develope from other teams is not refusal.

I have no problem with Sandy not extending him last offseason. He didn’t earn it based on hi 2009 and 2010 seasons.Even this year with the great numbers he put up he missed 36 games.I wouldn’t be in a rush to sign him either.

            • “When did Sandy refuse again?”

When he refused to make an offer while he had exclusivity!

  • Until we see what offers Reyes is getting its all just spin. Spin from the Mets, spin from Reyes, spin from his agent, spin from the sports pundits. He seems to want to see who will give him the biggest contract. No big surprise there. No big surprise the fans want him to stay. What I find pleasantly surprising is that for once the Mets aren’t over reacting like usual and throwing ridiculous contracts at him. I want Reyes to be a Met but he obviously doesn’t deserve a 7 year contract. If they give him 5 years that might be okay. He really should get a 4 year contract but all the players get too many years.

  • It’s called leverage… 80% of MLB teams have a better chance of making the 2012 WS than the Mets. Therefor, what are the chances of him resigning? YEAH, hmmmm let me sign for a team with no money, the few fans that we generate boo us, we hardly have a chance of even making the playoffs till 2013. Get real! Most of the people commenting here probably have never played sports beyond little league and come up with these ridiculous scenarios… Players play to win… With the few exceptions!!! You can say goodbye to Jose!!!

    • I wish we had a GM who played to win. This is the business of competition and the tone is set at the top. Whatever your financial restrictions are you should use to the best of your ability to try and keep your product as best as possible. Sandy is not doing that, he’s figuring why should he spend any of the money he’s allotted if he’s not gonna win anyway. That’s my take on it. He had a good enough roster last year and he spend whatever little money he had very poorly. He’s not doing a good job so far, and so far i’m seeing more of the same this year.

      • 4 Division titles
        3 AL Pennants
1 WS Title Mr Aldersons resume. That looks like a winner to me.

        • What are the yankee numbers on those stats?

And if you say we can’t spend like them tell us what clause in the MLB charter says that!
