Mets Offer Arbitration To Reyes
The Mets have offered Jose Reyes salary arbitration, according to Adam Rubin. Despite some changes free agent compensation in the CBA, Reyes’ status remains unchanged and he is still considered a Type-A free agent and if he declines arbitration the Mets would be guaranteed two draft picks as compensation. The Mets will automatically get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds of the draft. Additionally, if he signs with a team that finished in the top 15 [...]

A Dog Named Jose and a Cockatiel Named Gil
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, a huge Mets fan, is creating quite a buzz these days with his decision to name his dog after shortstop Jose Reyes. Another funny quote from Seinfeld came when he appeared on David Letterman on Wednesday night and said: “You want to know why the dog is named Jose? … The dog is named Jose because I feel like we may lose Jose Reyes, and we’re trying to keep a Jose. Because [...]

What Others Are Saying About The New Labor Agreement
Rather than bore you with what I like or don’t like about the new labor agreement, let me share some astute thoughts from those better equipped to talk about the various provisions in the new labor agreement. My father always told me, “never take your car to a butcher for repairs or get legal advice from your plumber”. So as for me, I’m glad we have a new labor agreement and that there will be no interruption to baseball [...]

Meaningful Games In September, Requires Meaningful Spending In Offseason
It certainly was eye-opening to read about what the Texas Rangers gave closer Joe Nathan, who is coming off Tommy John surgery. At 37, Nathan will get a two-year deal worth $14.5 million. Is he worth it? Apparently he is to the Texas Rangers, who’ll be writing the checks, and that’s all that really matters. If Nathan stays healthy and returns close to form, and Netfali Feliz makes the transition to the rotation, it would [...]

Baseball Shoots Themselves In The Foot Again
I wonder what my fellow Mets fans think of this Luxury Tax and Penalties that the new CBA will institute for the Amateur Draft and International Free Agent spending. NBC Sports has a an excerpt I want you yo read: Specifically, the tax on amateur draft bonus seems downright punitive. If teams exceed the bonus limit set by Major League Baseball by more than 5%, they get hit with a 75% tax. If they exceed it by between [...]

Mets 2011 Player Review: Lucas Duda, RF
We began our review of the 2011 Mets by examining their free agents and players the team will consider tending contracts to. We started evaluating the rest of the roster, beginning with infielder Ruben Tejada and continue today with Lucas Duda. Tomorrow: Justin Turner. LUCAS DUDA, RF THE SKINNY: Duda is power personified. When he gets one, it goes. He’s the last Met who needs the fences brought in. Duda was brought up to play [...]

Mets Sign Adam Loewen To Minor League Deal
Matt Eddy of Baseball America has reported that the Mets have gone ahead and signed minor league free agent outfielder Adam Loewen to a minor league contract. The former pitcher and Orioles first round pick, ran into some major control problems and bouts with wildness and is now reinventing himself as an outfielder, much like Rick Ankiel before him. His major league line as a pitcher was 8-8 in 29 starts with a 5.38 ERA over the three year of [...]

An Interview With MetsBlog’s Matt Cerrone
Recently, Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog was kind enough to answer a few questions for me via email, in which he shares his thoughts on some of the issues facing the Mets and the current state of the team. Joe – I am very concerned about Johan Santana despite the rosy outlook that he will be ready for spring training. First, he never came back last season and that really bothered me considering how many different timetables were [...]
