Mets Sign Vinny Rottino and Valentino Pascucci

Mets just made it official:

The New York Mets today announced they have signed first baseman Val Pascucci and catcher/outfielder Vinny Rottino to minor league contracts and invited both to major league Spring Training.

Pascucci, who turns 33 today, split last season between Buffalo (AAA) of the International League and the Mets.  He hit the first pinch-hit home run of his career on September 24 off Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels. The 6-6, 270-pounder appeared in 130 games for Buffalo (AAA) of the International League last season, hitting .264 (117-443) with a team-leading 91 RBI and was presented the Stan Barron MVP award.

A former 15th round pick by the Montreal Expos in the 1999 June Free-Agent Draft, Pascucci made his major league debut in 2004.  He appeared in 42 games over parts of two major league seasons for the Expos and Mets, hitting .192 (14-73) with three home runs and eight RBI.

Rottino, 31, spent last season with the Florida Marlins’ organization, playing in 119 games for New Orleans (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League and eight games with the Marlins.  The 6-0, 215-pounder hit .304 (142-467) with 10 home runs and 59 RBI for the Zephyrs, earning a nod to the Pacific Coast League All-Star Game. Rottino was promoted to the Marlins on September 6 and hit .167 (2-12).  Rottino also appeared in 18 major league games over parts of three seasons for Milwaukee (2006-08), and is a .194 (7-36) career hitter with four RBI.

  • Acc. to Jim Bowden confirmed by club sources, 11 teams are in on Mark Buehrle, by far the most in demand FA this offseason.

  • Acc. to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post, the Marlins reported offer of 6 yrs. and 90MM for Reyes is not accurate but is fairly close. Capozzi also said the Marlins don’t expect to sign any FA until Dec.

  • Crazy rumor- acc. to Jon Morosi, Prince said he will not be returning to the Brewers but is open to joining the CariParma Parma team in the Italian Baseball League.

    • Hope Prince doesn’t accept Euros for payment.

    • If Prince goes to Italy. They might have a MeatBall shortage in just one month !

      • LMAO! Is that the team team Piazza manages or a different one?

  • Wow… Vinny Rottino and Valentino Pascucci !! Print those World Series Tickets Now!

    • I wonder how many teams were in on them before we signed them.

  • Acc. to Heyman, CJ Wilson is seeking 6 guaranteed years and close to 120MM. Good luck with that which is why many teams are turning to Mark Buehrle.

    • He’s out of his mind,

If CJ Wilson can guarantee 6 fully healthy years of 200 innings and never an ERA of over 3.50 than he’s got a deal. If this guy is gonna ask for that then the guarantee has got to go both ways.

      Good luck with that one

  • Vinny Rottino!!!! Eat that, Marlins! You are trying to take Reyes…we just snatched up Rottino!!!! Victory is ours!

  • acc. to Ken Davidoff, the Mets have met with the representatives for FA reliever Frank Francisco. I figured him.

  • Francisco last year as a part time closer for the Blue jays put up the following nos.- 54G 50.2IP 49H 3.55ERA 17Saves just 4BS, a good 53 to 18 SO to BB ratio, a solid 80.4% LOB% or strand rate ( in contrast Parnell’s strand rate was just 71.9% last season and Craig Kimbrell’s strand rate was a similar 80.7%), a BAA of .245 and a WHIP of 1.32.

  • Once i saw this, i was on the phone right away for my season tickets (Roll eyes)

  • So Alderson spends some of whatever little money the team has on signing 33 year old Val Pascucci to a minor league contract….

    okayyyyyyyyyyyyy…sure.

    where’s t agee on this?

But of course Craing Lerner will think this is some kind of genius move by his very own Marshall Applewhite who does his thinking for him.

  • Wow, great pickups, now we’re talkin. Heard these two were the next Roy Hobbs.

  • Two minor league contracts, yeah that will really kill the budget. What do these minor leaguers make 50K a year each plus meal money? Yeah this will cost us any chance of resigning Reyes. With all the flurry of activity going on how dare Sandy waste time spending 100 grand on 2 players.

  • I love how people are jumping all over Alderson for basically getting some filler for the farm. As if this has anything to do with Reyes or something.

Again, check the MLB transaction list and you’ll see all teams making these types of deals.

No one seems to acknowledge that there has been 1 big free agent changing teams so far. (well 2 if you want to count Cuddyer, but then, why would you?)

But, hey, why actually learn about the process or check the facts when you can do some good old fashion ignorant ranting?

    • Agreed. Very myopic. It’s like there has to be some order of sign the best players, then sign the middle players, then sign the bottom players, then sign MiL filler. If this flow isn’t followed, the Chicken Littles on this site freak out. I’ve never seen such a lack of patience or such a need for Ritalin before.

  • seriously, at what point do people stop the defense for sandy alderson?? i mean, no matter what he does some idiots here will try to justified what he does even if is nothing… is amazing to say the least.. imo, the worst GM i have seen in ALL MY life…

    • What is to defend at this point? He signed a couple minor leaguers, as others (including the Yanks) have done and only done. So really, what is there to blast on, either?

      • stuckin, the point is YOU KNOW teams like the yankees will make move to improve the team, and hell are at least even talking to good players to try to improve their ballclub, can anyone of us say the same about this man?? not even a peep on any of the good players to us.. is downright pathetic and his legacy as the GM of the mets will be as the aWORST GM THE METS HAVE EVER HAD…

        • They are talking with Reyes. I’d consider him to be good.

And look, I understand that the moves thus far (last year included) are weak. But trying to buy something worth a hundred bucks and you don’t have 2 nickels to scratch together makes it difficult to buy said something. That is why I don’t dump blame on Alderson. It’s all on the Wilpons.

    • Why do people need to attack him on moves that are pretty SOP for any team?

      • Why do People applaud him for fixing things when our three best players from 2010 are not on the team anymore and all we have acquired so far is cheap crap?

        • No one applauded him for these signings. And Beltran was leaving anyway and we’re better off without Rodriguez.

Just attacking a guy for being mentioned in a book you’ll never read.

          • Yeah what book is that Donal?

            Your own personal Bible?
The one that showed how to win all those World Series titles? Oh Wait….

            • “Why do People applaud him for fixing things when our three best players from 2010 are not on the team anymore and all we have acquired so far is cheap crap?”

Why do People pretend that Zach Wheeler is crap?

I mean honestly, I’m not sitting here proclaiming he’s the next Doc Gooden… but crap? Really? If you’re telling me you don’t think Wheeler has potential to be a big league pitcher then you should probably apply to be a big league scout since several disagree with you. Baseball America doesn’t just throw darts to do their rankings, they get information from people who’s job it is to evaluate talent.

I mean you can say whatever you want, but when you declare Wheeler as “crap” you lose any merit you may have once had

              • Same reason you conclude that Davis, Murphy, Tejada, Duda, Gee, Niese, Havens, Flores, Harvey, Familia, Mejia, Neuwenhuis, etc…etc… are Crap!

They have not done anything in the MLB yet so according to you they never will!

Is Wheeler a sure thing Multi Appearance All Star? Beltran Was!
Is that all an All Star player is worth these days? One A ball Pitcher?

                • Metsie, are you drunk?

“Same reason you conclude that Davis, Murphy, Tejada, Duda, Gee, Niese, Havens, Flores, Harvey, Familia, Mejia, Neuwenhuis, etc…etc… are Crap!”

When have I EVER said those words? Tell me. I’d love for you to show me any time in the history of this site when I said any of those guys are “crap”

If you can’t then just put your tail between your legs and walk away. Making stuff up to prove your point doesn’t do anything for you except lessen the merit of anything you say from this point forward.

                • So basically Metsie your answer to when I called any of those guys crap is … never?

                  Thanks for playing.

                • Metsie sorry but you’re not making any sense and still have yet to show me a single time in my life when I have said any of those guys are “crap.”

If you can’t prove the words you say as you slander another person, it doesn’t make me the wrong one… it makes you the liar.

I’m done with this thread, I’m not going to fight with a person who makes things up, gets called out on them and then backtracks to find a way to make themselves look right.

Bottom line: I never, ever said what you claim I’ve said. Therefore, you are a liar. Case closed.

                  Your replacing Tejada and Duda
                  Want to send Murphy packing
                  Already hoping to trade Santana

I mean basically you would love to replace anyone who currently wears a Met Uni!

The piece about your SHORT TERM plan speaks volumes about what you believe!

And it also shows that all this talk you been making about a long term plan is plain and utter bull!

                • Dude do you really think that no one here has ever read your posts in the past? Do you really think that NOT PLAYING or REPLACING those guys means you think they are good?

                  Get a clue!
Lying doesn’t work because while letters don’t have volumes they do have HISTORY!

And everyone who has ever read your post knows you don’t want to build with any youth!
You just want to draft them and keep them in the minors or throw them on the bench in favor of 1-2 Mil per year scrubs!

You PLAN for 2012 says it all!

                • I’m mnot making sense because your whole concept of GOOD and BAD doesn’t make sense in the real world!

                  Tell us all Jessup…
Do you REPLACE YOUNG KIDS who are NOT CRAP?
Do you replace those kids with 1 Mil per year CRAP?

If you do then what opinion should anyone believe you have about the players you are replacing with CHEAP TURDS?

Are we supposed to assume your post means they are GREAT players and we should be replacing all the GREAT players we have with cheap CRAP?

Cause that certainly would explain your position on a whole lot of issues around here…
Reyes is great lets replace him
Wright is great lets trade him!
Beltran is great we can’t have that!
K-Rod was effective can’t keep him either!

Tejada is Great lets get Furcal!
Duda is great so lets get someone else to replace him.

Yeah I think I see where your problems of MAKING SENSE probably lay!

You think replacing GREAT PLAYERS with CRAP is the the SMART WAY FORWARD!

            • What does the Necronomicon have to do with this discussion?

  • Pas is really just a resigning here, keeping their own so I can’t complain too much about that.

Funny though this does seem to go against what the Slashers say is to be avoided when signing guys. 33 is way past his prime no?

Does fit more in line with what I proposed as a long term plan though. He’s cheap and perfectly fine as a bench player pinch hitter for the MLB squad.

Duda is our regular RF and Murphy is still here I do wonder if having another 1B on the bench is really needed with Ike coming back. But thats not enough of a problem for me to complain.

Rotino is 31 (another spring chicken?) If it means we don’t need Paulino anymore I suppose I don’t have a problem with it.

These are the kinds of guys I have suggested promoting from Buffalo instead of going out and signing reclamation flip projects for 1-2 mil each.
Evans and F-Mart should also be promoted as well.

If we are destined to lose a lot next year might as well do it with cheap kids we own!
Maybe someone takes a liking to them and we can trade them for something that will not make us waste a season while Sandy crawls his way to competitive baseball.

  • Where were all these people that are now coming to the defense of Sandy Alderson for signing these guys, when Omar signed similar players like Hessman, Dickey, Fogg, Catalanotto, and Jacobs?

Omar was attacked for signing these type of players too, and none of these guys defended Omar – I wonder why that is?

And in fact, I’ve seen these SAME people STILL attcking Omar for signing Catalanato and Jacobs. And they only started 8 games combined – And oh by the way, these same people don’t attack Sandy Alderson for having Willie Harris playing in 126 games.

    • They were too busy reading moneyball to pay attention and notice thats what Omar did and did it much better than Sandy has to date!

Valentin, Dickey, Mota, Easley, Anderson, Castro, Cora, Dessens, LHernandez, Barajas, Blanco, Tatis….

All did far more for us than Buchholz, Young, Boyer, carrasco, hairston, Harris, Paulino and Capuano!

      • You left of Endy Chavez and H Takahashi off your list, Metsie.

    • Omar certainly had his good with his bad. Omar was not the worst GM ever. I don’t like how he worked his operation, but that also has to be on Wilpons for just opening up the checkbook and saying run with it. I definitely did not approve of the attempting to catch lightning in the bottle almost every time. Some worked (Tatis, Dickey, Barajas)… Others, not so much. I really don’t like how he neglected the rotation, but that’s all hindsight at this point.

      • Well NJ you made the one point I completely agree with as Omar’s failure!

He should have went and bought another ACE to pitch with Santana (and even for Perez)

If he had spent that money then we might be having a completely different view of what Omar’s spending had on this franchise!

Spending for the sake of spending is not good.
Spending a lot is not the killer it is portrayed though.
The problem is if your going to try to spend to win you have to spend ENOUGH to ensure you get the goal!
Thats what the Yankees and Phillies have done!

They didn’t just spend to win they spent as an INSURANCE policy that they would get into the playoffs!
Not saying we should do that now but it sure would have been good for 2006-2008 when we had committed to spend to win something!

One more ACE removes the two chokes!
Thats 3 years of Playoffs and maybe a WS in 2006 as well!

Then no one would be as down on Omar as they are now!
