Marlins Make Significant Offer To Reyes

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Marlins have made significant offers to both Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols.

Anyway, so maybe I was wrong… So sue me…

That said, significant doesn’t sound like the three-year deal a Mets official suggested on Wednesday night., so nobody’s perfect. ;-)

Original Post 10:00 AM

Last night, Jorge Sedano, a contributor for the Miami Herald said via Twitter that a team source told him that Jose Reyes to the Miami Marlins is “almost a done deal.”

Sedano also hosts a sports radio talk show in Miam for 790AM The Ticket.

As to his comment, I’m pretty certain more well-known journalists are already trying to verify if there is any truth to this, but let’s have some fun.

I’m betting that either the Marlins or Reyes will deny this news before Jon Heyman, Buster Olney and Ken Rosenthal knock down it’s veracity.

Jose Reyes didn’t come all this way to take the first offer he gets. He waited eight years to be come a free agent, I’m pretty sure his free agent status will last more than eight days.

Common sense right?

Can’t wait to read the next “This really, really, really hurts” post. ;-)

With all apologies to Alex, thanks for the link!

  • wait a second hojo, i just posted the link, can i at least get some love here!!?? LOL..

    • Sorry Alex, I did get that link from your comment and neglected to acknowledge you. I have updated the post.

    • LMAO Thanks hojo.. You’re the man!!! :-)

      • Alex,

Thanks for taking the time to post that link out here today. I was busy last night and woke up late and this site is usually the first place I go to for the day’s baseball news so I’m sure I’m only one of many who wasn’t aware of that Jose news until now so thanks.

        • bayonne, i do what i can to help out..

    • IN THE SPIRIT OF WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON; “DEFINE SIGNIFICANT!

  • Is this like the Lee to Yankees is a done deal?

I’ll believe it when the Marlins have that press conference with Jose putting on a Miami uniform.

Like Hojo, I can’t believe Jose – who admittedly said he was excited to be going thru FA for the first time – is taking the first serious offer made.

    • …or maybe money isn’t first and foremost on his mind, like Lee. Marlins wined& dined and make the effort. What does Sandy do? Send a txt msg? I know he said he met face to face but I understood at as with his representatives only.

While Sandy is going through a “continuum” in his mind and enjoying his big words, Jose is signing on the dotted line at Joe’s Stone Crabs, which btw they raved about on Hot Stove.

      • Bayonne,

“…or maybe money isn’t first and foremost on his mind, like Lee.”

Do you even understand the deal Cliff Lee signed? Do you get that he accepted just as much money to play for Phillie as he would have with anybody else? In fact if Cliff Lee is still a top notch starter in his last year, the Phils either pay him 12.5mil to buy him out or they pay him 27mil ish to keep him 1 more year.

Cliff Lee didn’t turn down a life of luxury for Philadelphia. He signed the best deal he had on the table. Go look into it before you just assume things please.

        • Insisting on a lie doesn’t make it true!

Calculate what Le gets if they do the buyout and tell me it’s more than the Yanks offered GUARANTEED!

Only if they buy the option does he get that money!
SO he took LESS money than what the Yanks offered!

No matter how much you insist your numbers do not add up UNLESS he gets the 27 Mil on the option year, if not he gets less money per year!

          • Yankees offer was for $148 mil if the option vests. http://twitter.com/#!/jcrasnick/status/14570270371094530

Phillies offer was for $147 if the option vests. http://twitter.com/#!/jcrasnick/status/14571611558514690

What a saint that Lee is, turning down so much money to go to Philly.

            • And what is the difference if the option does NOT Vest!

              • 132 million from the Yanks, 132.5 million from the Phils. Do I have to provide you the same exact links a second time?

                • Your links (from two days ago) proved that Lee gets 120 Mil if they buy him out of the option!

And weren’t you the one poo pooing Twitter information a few days back when Alex posted it?

And Yankees extended their offer to 148 Mil or did you convenliently forget that?
                  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/14/sports/baseball/14yankees.html

                  Now go spin on that!

                • Two days ago? Or 12/14/10? Facts mean nothing to you, don’t they? And a lie about “poo-pooing” twitter? How do you even get away with these things?

“And Yankees extended their offer to 148 Mil or did you convenliently forget that?”

“Yankees offer was for $148 mil if the option vests.” Now it’s just blatant lies. I’m out.

                • Ahh th old all your FACTS are lies and all our lies are fact and if you don’t buy that I run away defense?

I posted a link from the NY TIMES!!!!!!

                  WHAT DID IT SAY?????

I suppose they are lying but the guy on Twitter was a reliable source?

PLEASE X If you have no facts stop trying to make those who DO out to be Liars!

The Story speaks for itself you can choose not to believe it but thems the facts!
And it says QUITE CLEARLY Lee took LESS money from the Phillies!

EVERYONE agrees with this except the three Court jesters of Payroll anihilation!

      • I have not reason to believe money isn’t the motivating factor. Why wouldn’t it be?
And I can’t blame him if it is. He’s no different than most other FAs. Pretty sure it’s going to boil down to money with Pujols and Fielder as well.

      • So now it’s about being wined and dined to make a deal, not the actual deal. This is turning into a soap opera for sure. Sorry but now I’ve read everything.

Reyes and his agent are going to accept the best deal for Reyes, it’s about Reyes and no one else. Just like everyone else out there. He has made it clear he wants to go to FA for the experience of it all. I can’t blame him either.

  • So was Madsen’s to the Phillies. It’s early. He won’t sign for a while.

  • Who the heck is Gorge Sedano? These nuts are coming out of the woodwork now. My neighbor Mizrai Patel told me Jose Reyes will get a yacht as a part of his Marlins deal. Post that.

    • haha. I agree. Well, sort of.

If Reyes does sign in the very near futur with Florida it’s because they made a ridiciulous offer that would make Reyes’ agent jump over the table to sign.

I said back in September and October comments on here that I feel Florida is the most likely non Mets spot for him to land because of the new stadium, manager, marketing (new uni’s etc) but it’s still early.

If Florida made him just a fair market offer, there’s no reason for the deal to be “close.”

      • there are “reports” that it’s a 3 year offer worth $20mil per year.

That just seems like a very odd offer for Reyes to be “close” to signing. There are so many questions about it, I don’t know where to start but I’ll go with

What kind of 28 year old free agent would jump at a 3 year deal?

  • There are times where this site really wears me out with some of the ridiculous posts, but seriously it’s the few sensible writers like hojo that keep me coming back. I completely agree with your points and would file this rumor in the wastebasket.

    • Squidoo, I know your my biggest fan right? haha

  • No one else is evening mentioning this. not even the other South Florida feeds. Not buying it.

    • Just another writer looking for his 15 minutes of fame. This is one of the things I dislike about using twitter as a news medium.

  • Perhaps the “reporter” misunderstood. The Reyes eal isn’t clsoe to done, the Marlins just finished their pitch to him.

    Just a theory.

  • Sach, nice job

Can I just put this out there… I know that the Mets front office haters would look at this another reason to hate but

Lets just say Reyes signed a reported 3 yr deal worth $20mil a year to play for the Marlins

Wouldn’t that tell you something about his other suitors as well? If no other team would be willing to pony up more than that, then wouldn’t that be evidence that all other teams are questioning Reyes’ worth as well?

I mean lets call a spade a spade. If he signs 3yr/60 mil contract, even with an option attached…he and his agent lost in the game of Free Agency. You can spin it however you want, but that is not a contract worth bragging about for a 28 yr old free agent.

If he signed that you’re telling me NOBODY else could offer the guy 90mil for 5 yr? Why not? Is every MLB operating under “moneyball” theories then too?

  • I saw and spoke to Jose Reyes this morning on my job. ( I’m a skycap at AA terminal in JFK airport.) Jose was flying to San Juan with his beautiful wife. (She is fine!) Anyway, I asked him what’s the deal? Jose told me that right now he’s leaning towards signing with the Marlins but wants to receive other concrete offers from other teams. And we’ll see.

    • Nice. Also doubt he’d be flying to Puerto Rico if he was really close to signing a deal.

  • If this is true, this will kill the Mets completely. The Mets fanbase will be pointing the finger in anger towards the Wilpons for letting Reyes go.

  • The Marlins have a big event to promote their new logo, unis, and stadium tonight. This is the kickoff to their big season-ticket sales push.

The talk of Reyes and Pujols being seriously pursued by the Marlins right before this event sounds like a typical sales ploy.

I don’t believe Reyes or Pujols to Miami for a second, and will be shocked if either of them go there.

    • I agree with you Francis there is NO WAY he is signing this deal nor is Pujols, Please, remember when every one thought because he was Spanish Omar could get all these Spanish players , well that’s what the Marlins are trying to do with Guillen. Lets see how that works

  • I’m surprised with all the rumors of the big name free agents supposedly being courted by Miami, no one has made any Heat references.

  • Acc. to Ken Rosenthal on twitter at 5:56 PM EST, the Marlins have made substantial offers to both Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes.

    • Geez, could you imagine Reyes leading off for Pujols and Stanton?

Also, what would they do with Gaby Sanchez?

      • But Sandy uses big words! He’s busy sorting through his continuum of substantive concepts.

Oh and another one of his favorite words that has rubbed off on his legion of disciples – VALUE!

The more I hear the word “value” the more the Mets stink.

  • This is so unbelievable. I never saw a team shed so many of their best players in a matter of six months like the Mets have. This is worse than when the Marlins won the world series and then got rid of everybody the next year.

  • “According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Marlins have made significant offers to both Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols”

If there are no numbers provided (for contract value and length) we shouldn’t assume the offers are significant or insignificant. The news release may be just spin.

  • One local Miami reporter tweeted that the Marlins have ALREADY sold 30,000-35,000 seats per game next season in their new stadium. I never thought I’d live to see the day of the Marlins with a payroll over 100MM and now the Mets on life support pinching pennies like the Marlins used to. If the Marlins sign Albert, Jose, Cuban CF Cespedes and Buehrle, I do see them screwing Jose and trading his problem child buddy-Hanley who’s not crazy about moving to 3B, Gabby Sanchez and Ricky Nolasco to offset some of that money and fill other areas of need on the team- 3B,SP and bullpen with cheap, controllable MLB ready talent.

    • Matt Dominguez is only about a year, maybe 2, away from being MLB ready to play 3B.

  • Reyes, Pujols, Hanley, Stanton, and LoMo in the lineup with Johnson, Nolasco, Sanchez, and Vazquez pitching. If this would happen, Miami would finally have a dream team.

    • Add the possibility of Mark Buehrle or CJ Wilson to that rotation.

    • And they could win a world series and then dismantle the team!

      • They don’t have to anymore they get to keep the money made off concessions!

  • I love how the Mets are changing the fences, jerseys and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the team next year while two of their best home grown players bolt away. Reyes is gone, Wright is being traded and true fans like myself are pretty much done watching baseball for awhile. I am embarresed to be a fan of this stupid team with stupid ownership.

    • And the teams moving the fastest so far this off season, wasting no time while Alderson takes 1 hours to answer a question are the ones closest to the Mets! Marlins & Phillies so far. And Mets cross town rivals also wasted no time in making sure their Ace pitcher doesn’t test the market.

Meanwhile Sandy sends a text msg and say call us when you’re ready. Jose may NEVER call and SIGN without EVER calling, Mr. Alderson.

Oh and what happened to all the talk about Sandy Alderson using advanced statistical analysis? Wasn’t that supposed to help compensate for a small payroll? Not that ours in the smallest in baseball anymore.

      What happened to that?????

Now the story is Alderson was only brought here to shed payroll and it’s all the Wilpon’s fault.
Sounds like a BIG COPOUT to me for a GM who is simply doing a TERRIBLE job so far.

And also isn’t part of the GM’s job supposed to generate fan interest? Fan enthusiasm? And not drive the fans away by the thousands?

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE job by Alderson so far and when is The Press going to get on this guy’s case?

  • I wish I could tell you what I learned about the Mets today from a very reliable source. Things will get even worse in 2013 before they get better, and DO NOT expect a payroll over $80-85 million in 2013. MARK MY WORDS!

    • Let me just add that before Commissioner Bud Selig retires after the end of the 2012 season, the Mets as we know them will be no more. Pay close attention to my posts in the next few days. Something big is in the works and it’s chock full of underhandedness.

      • “…. before Commissioner Bud Selig retires after the end of the 2012 season, the Mets as we know them will be no more. Pay close attention to my posts in the next few days.”

We’ll be watching Joe. In many ways, ever since the Boston Braves started the exodus from the east coast, followed by the Philadelphia Athletics, St. Louis Browns, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, baseball has been in cultural upheaval. So I won’t be too shocked at whatever happens. The allegiance of teams to cities, and players to teams (death of the reserve clause), has ended. The business of baseball has changed drastically.

      • I’ve been thinking that once Uncle Bud goes away, all the nicey-nicey the Mets have been getting from MLB is toast. And really, If Santana rebounds and is traded, as well as Wright, they could get down to that mark. In my mind, that will be a travesty, not just in general terms, but with the FA market for next year, this team better be ready to buy. So much pitching and quality players to come onto the market…

      • LOL Joe!

Now they are all quaking in their boots over what you may say!
Cause it might prove that the team is headed to oblivion and there would go the Sandy Lovefest right out the broken foundation!

      • Outside of moving the team, I have no idea what this could mean or why it would raise so much ire. The Mets as we know them being no more? Does that mean we’ll make the playoffs? We’ll stop being a punch line for hack comedy writers? No more uniforms that look like company softball teams?

        • Go read the threads that were about league realignment.

          • There will not be 2 AL teams in NYC. That would be even worse than the current “one interleague series every day” thing that looks like is happening. I don’t see any benefit. You’d break up some fairly profitable rivalries in hopes of manufacturing another.

Unless this is just drama being played up, it would have to be something like an ownership swap MLB did with the Expos-Marlins-Red Sox where the Wilpons get to bow out and we get stuck with an owner like Angelos (remember how I keep saying there are worse situations than the Mets?)

            • There will not be two teams in NYC period!

Las Vegas already has the chunk of land they intend to use to build a Baseball and Football stadium!

Right across the street from the M casino!

They spent 10 Mil on the ramps for it already in anticipation!

The AL west only has 4 teams in it!

Mets go to vegas in the AL West to make 5 teams each in the AL
Pitt moves to the NL East to even up the NL to 5 teams each in the NL

              Interleage series every day!

Now this is where you tell me this is an impossible scenario isn’t it?

              • Have you been to Vegas recently? Have you seen all the half finished projects? That’s why Trump even got his foot in the door there. they are desperate for projects.

Besides, there is no way any of the major sports orgs will put a pro team in Vegas. MLB is way too sensitive about the gambling issue.

Besides, no one wants to play there in the 120 degree heat.

                • Yep I been there plenty this year! When were you there last?

I even have a house there!

There are only TWO Hotel properties that have halted construction Fountain Bleu and Echelon!
The other stopped constructions are on Condo’s not hotels!

                • I was back there during the spring and I didn’t say hotels. I said construction projects. I brought up Trump to show how desperate they were to finish any project.

And still the gambling and the weather.

Not to mention being the #2 team in NY still beats being the #1 team just about anywhere else. Moving a team out of NY not only takes away from your #1 market, but also puts fear into all your other markets.

        • If I had to guess, it would be that the league is going to take control of the Mets, similar to what they did with the Expos.

The Mets are broke and can’t repay the MLB the 20MM they owe, so it makes sense.

If that’s true, I’m psyched, unless there’s a clause about an outright sale to Selig himself once he steps down as commissioner.

Sure the team will be stripped to the bone, but the Wilpons would be out the door and a new buyer will be easy to find.

          • If they didn’t take control of the Dodgers, Astros or any of the other teams that have had financial strife worse than the Mets, they won’t step in like that here.

Maybe an owner swap with like the Rays or something, but MLB won’t take control.

            • When did the Astros have financial strife?

              • Well I guess it depends on what we see as strife. They never had the issues the Dodgers have, but their owners have simply been unable to to afford a competitive baseball team for a while now. That is why they are selling.

                • I get your point, so I’m not arguing that. But specific to the Astros, it’s more an issue that the owners family has no interest in continuing to run the biz. Plus, he bought at about 100 mil and is selling around 600 mil… he’s no pauper and there are no financial issues. They did, however do something similar to the Mets in that they went FA happy and over spent, so that they screwed all their draft picks and financial flexibility. But I wish the Wilpons we’re in McClain’s financial position.

    • I said, on here, prior to this past season that the payroll in 2013 would be around $70 million…so $80-85 million is actually a higher payroll than I expected.

  • And you think Jose will just take the first offer to come along? Come on now….

    • Yeah, I also don’t think he will take the first offer. I also believe he will come back to Mets with best offer out there and see what happens with them.
