I understand he is not qualified just like us here, but as a journalist he has a bigger place to inform than we do. I am sure he will again like all baseball journalists do, tell you what the Mets should do. His “trades” are not usually good at all for the Mets and as Met fan my point was that I would not want him as my GM.

If he leaves for a ridiculous contract or simply because he doesn’t wanna be here, most fan bases would be ticked off with him. Most would see that as a slap in the face. They’d look back on Game 162 and think “maybe there was more to him taking himself out?”

But here, right now, it’s almost as if no matter what he does, people will look to blame somebody else. If Pujols leaves the Cardinals, Cards fans will be ticked with Pujols, not with their GM.

I did not realize you hated Collins too. thought it was just the FO. Collins is old school though, not a numbers guy.

I mean I guess you have to in your head come up with figures that you’d UNDERSTAND why they don’t sign him. Because if you think he’s an open checkbook player, you’re wrong. So being reasonable, you as a fan have to say “5 years” or “100mil”, you have to set parameters.

Because if he signs with say Florida (just hypothetical) for 7 years 120mil and there is an uprising about it, it will be ugly and foolish.

But if he goes somewhere and signs like a 5 yr 95mil, yeah I’ll join you in anger. But before I do I’d like to hear both sides.

I’m sure Reyes if he leaves will put an ad in some paper like Crawford did, but if the Mets say “we offered X, and he didn’t want it” and you deem X as “fair” then I hope for 162 games we aren’t reading each summary as “imagine if we had signed reyes”

As for Wright, I find it interesting when “sources” say the package won’t be that much. Because lets be honest whether you like Wheeler or not (which its odd to me to not like him but whatever), the fact they got him for a 34 yr old free agent is pretty impressive for a late July deal.

So that’s what makes him qualified. It makes people who know baseball feel reassured.

In MLB, fortunes can change a lot in a couple of years, and it is not all based on developing prospects out of the minors to fill every roster spot.

a couple good FA moves, a smart trade or 2, and a couple young guys hitting, and bingo, competing for playoffs.

so odds are, at least 1 (that is all it takes) GM is going to look at Wright and see his career #s, age, and the issues around the team the last couple years, and come to the conclusion that in a new environment (say, Colorado) he will be revitalized and have a huge year. Doesn’t matter what the other 28 GMs think.

mentining OBP or having to live on a budget is not a discussion about sabermetrics. nor is mentioning the name of the Mets GM.
