There Are No Words…

“Former Mets GM Omar Minaya interviewed yesterday for the vacancy in the Angels front office. Given Minaya’s less than stellar track record and his love for former Expos and aging names in his time here I sincerely hope that he lands in LA. Sandy Alderson and company would have a field day with him”. ~ Stephen Schmidt, Amazin Avenue

ahhhhhh, nice to see the amazing guys at AA… sandy alderson will have a field day?!? based on what?!? sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…
good for minaya, i hope he gets the job. can you imagine if he does and then the first thing he does is sign reyes there… ?? wow.. there might be something to that since there has been reports of reyes liking the angels…
Omarfans head must have just exploded.
but, this quote seems a bit over the top. Though liking former expos, that part is true (good or bad). I don’t know if he had a “love” for aging guys as much as lack of fear of the #, but he did seem to be attracted to big names.
But, he always seemed like a nice guy that was really trying hard. Whether he was in over his head, or the Jeffy factor was too much to overcome, I hope he does get another job in the right environment.
Omarfans head must have just exploded.”"
LMAO!!! good one, you never been in AA?? we call it the alderson avenue, those fools over there spend countless hours making fun of minaya and never provide any info or news on the mets, just pathetic childish behavior…
I have not seen that comments section in a long time. I seem to recall they bicker among themselves even more than happens over here. Just with a lot more math involved.
Like threatening other users?
Besides, that was in their morning news update. Schmidt just threw his own opinion in there as well. Same thing happens here.
All GM’s go after players or personnel they are familiar with. The holy trinity running the Mets now is no different: Brad Emaus, Allan Dykstra, Chris Young, Jason Isringhausen, Mike Baxter, Scott Hairston and Miguel Batsista all played for DePo, Sandy or JP int heir careers.
And Alderson is filling every spot in the front office and even the bench with former A’s.
“All GM’s go after players or personnel they are familiar with.”
That right there: Yes, that was a very good start.
Why did you follow up with the rest of that silliness?
That is absolutely true Maniac and it applies even to other industries as well but it’s also indicative of a lack of scouting or trust in the scouting dept so if your predisposed toward guys you know and you consequently aren’t looking every where then your results are going to be less than they should.
In one sense Minaya almost had to “recruit” guys he was familiar with to fill in around the fringes because the upper levels of the farm were so barren and he spent so much big money on key spots but if Alderson/Depo/Riccardi continue to do the same it will be even more of a lack of scouting because there are some players not too far away.
I do think it was a one off situation just trying to address some positions with depth in an off season where they were just getting settled more than they way it’s always going to be but we’ll find out.
Isn’t he under contract for another year?
I thought 2011 was it, but I am sure if he gets another offer, the mets would be happy to release him from the deal in order to stop paying him.
We should ask for someone in return. Cubs and BoSox are setting a precedent there.
No his contract expired at the end of this year. He’s free to go!
Are you sure he’s free to go? I was under the impression he was fired even though the 3 year extension he got didn’t kick in yet?
I like where Donal is heading with this, let’s get some compensation if we can.
Found it!
Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, whom the club would prefer to keep through the summer, has told friends he would love to sign with the Angels when he becomes a free agent after the season, a source said Tuesday. While Reyes might look good in manager Mike Scioscia’s system.

No his 3 year extension kicked in prior to the 2009 season. He was asked to stay with the team for his final season but he chose not to.
According to Cot’s, Reyes’ contract, signed in 2006, was for 4 years starting in 2007, with an option for 2011, which was exercised last winter. There was no committment, option or otherwise, for another season.
Are you serious?
Minaya would certainly help with the recruitment of Reyes if that’s the way the LAA are leaning but there is tough competition with Friedman. Everyone associated with Tampa knows the franchise has no chance. In the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years and they still can’t draw even with tons of exciting home grown stars. It’s really a tight wire act for Tampa to develop ALL of their own pitchers and hitters without top 10 draft picks without being able to go overslot and big internationally and then hope they can sign those guys to long team friendly deals without some of them blowing up.
Eddie Bane the Angles former scouting director will also supposedly get an interview after being fired by Riggleman a year ago.
The trend since the steroid era ended has been to develop your own players and the LAA have actually done better losing guys to free agency, or not getting them than they have by signing guys. Scoccia probably has a lot to say about personal moves and Reyes would be perfect in his high pressure offense but Minaya also has the ability to identify international amateurs and that could be a big tipping point.
If Minaya’s ideas for the LAA didn’t include a lot of signing of expensive older free agents he might be the perfect fit.
Haren, Weaver, Santana, Chatwood and Richards down on the farm is a pretty good rotation to start off with. Bourjos, Conger and Trout are great young talents and Segura a SS/2B about a year and a half away and Kendrick and Aybar free agents in 2013. I could see Reyes Kendrick and Aybar comprising the MI infield next year with Reyes/Segura being the plan beginning in 2013.
Without SO many needs on the Major League roster and a bankrupt farm Minaya wouldn’t have to worry so much about speed. He could concentrate on quality.
Sometimes the guy who didn’t make it his first time around is a great choice simply because he knows what went wrong and Artie Moreno doesn’t strike me as a petty and cheap behind the scenes owner concerned with everything except winning like the Wilpon’s and the fact that Minaya has a personal tie to Jose……
I think the first shot has been fired in the battle over Jose Reyes and I think there is a great chance that Minaya gets the GM job or another very significant position in the Angels FO.
I don’t see Minaya making the difference. Jose isn’t going to the west coast just because Omar is the GM there (assuming he wouldn’t go for the same deal from another GM)
Reyes wouldn’t go anywhere just because of the GM, Minaya or anyone else but everything else being reasonably attractive could very well be the difference.
Big market, nice weather, competitive team, big money, running style brand of offense, good young talent already up here and some more on the way.
I don’t think that when you weigh all the factors and then add in the GM who originally signed him as the Director of International scouting for the Mets and then was the GM of the Mets for six of his 8 1/2 years that it doesn’t become just one more check mark on the LAA side of the ledger.
Wasnt there something posted here not too long ago that Reyes would love to play for the Angels? It was an actual quote I believe.
I mistakenly posted a link to Reyes telling friends he would love to play for the Angels in the wrong reply. Here it is again:
Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, whom the club would prefer to keep through the summer, has told friends he would love to sign with the Angels when he becomes a free agent after the season, a source said Tuesday. While Reyes might look good in manager Mike Scioscia’s system.

The Angels are also pretty strapped with some bad contracts.Last offseason Artie Moreno said the team will not add anymore substantial payroll.Whether or not that has changed remains to be seen. They definitely need some offense.
I hope he gets the gig out there. I’m not sure about the quote and don’t really care about it but hopefully Minaya gets a chance with a very good franchise.
I heard the last part of his interview required that he finish one sentence before starting another. The interview is now into it’s third day…
How would Sandy Alderson have a field day if Minaya went to Los Angeles? I know they hate Minaya over there, but I dont understand what was meant by the comment? Anybody that can clue me in, feel free.
yea I didn’t get it either
I took it to mean that the angels would become to the mets what the Astros have been for the phils recently.
Sandy Alderson is going to get his LUNCH eaten if Omar and Reyes unite. Then the Mets can revert back to the 70′s and be a pathetic little team in the shadows of the Yankees.
And sites like AMAZING ANIMALS can keep watching the losses totals grow like their stomachs.
COMICAL! LOL
Very true! I don’t know how we’ll maintain our firm grasp on 4th place without Jose!Maybe he’ll take Bay with him.
That site will be a virtual Ghost Town should Omar get a gig and beat Sandy to the Playoffs!
They will all hide under the couch licking their wounds!
makes no sense at all. When did they form some kind of new league for GMs to compete against each other in individual challenges? is it like Chess? maybe survivor?
Ummmmm…these teams compete against one another, or did you forget that? You take away a team’s better player you weaken them. They may not play in the same league, but they help diminish our strength overall. I hope you’re not thinking GMs compete via who spends less or more.
Quite a bold statement. I’m a fan of the NY Mets, how about you?
If that happens will you and Omarfan switch to being an Angels fan?
It’s worth noting that while its obvious Aybar is not Reyes, the Angels appear to not “need” a SS. They fall under the category of “just fine” with the type of SS they have. Now, 3B that is a different story. For the “trade Wright” folks, maybe that is a greater possibility?
If you look at their squad, a guy like Wright would actually do more for them than Reyes because they already have speed in Aybar, Bourjos, Kendrick. Speed etc is not their problem. Power and run producing are. Wright is a better fit in LAA as presently constructed than Reyes in my view
