Well done Joe. I used to be on the NYTimes Mets forum for about ten years. It started out well then a certain few held it hostage until it was finally shut down.

Some confuse freedom of speech with blogging – they bully, discuss their political adgenda and are downright intolerant to others’ opinions. That is not the way to hold discussions.

People can and should disagree but there is no room for personal attacks.

I applaud this.
I enjoy the posts on this site and still read most but have either totally skipped over comments or rarely add to comments because of the constant bickering lately. I’m probably not the only one.

I’m sure those who have caused Joe’s post on this know who they are. Hopefully they’ll get the message.

I just wonder how many people here who are regular users have even donated to the site?

is 25 or 50 bucks gonna kill you? And relative to the time you spend here that’s not asking a lot.

Although it’s nice I don’t think giving the site a pat on the back or a smile, or some nice words is gonna keep it afloat. Money always seems to make me smile more than most things..except for one –

I’m so glad to see these problems finally being addressed. From one who has enjoyed this site for a long time, I was sad to see it become overrun by be these brash extremists who had no respect for themselves let alone others. Nice to see sanity has prevailed.

It’s gonna be sad to see the old shoutbox go, but it needs to be done. For that, I applaud you Joe. Before I went M.I.A. on here, I used to be a regular on the box and to be honest, I used to be irritated to see the same old regurgitated crap over and over on a daily basis, usually spawned by certain individuals (You know who you are!). Like someone commented earlier, it’s hard to give your opinion without people jumping down your throat, even if it was a good, fair, and objective opinion. As far as the thumb rating system goes, meh…we really could do without it. Thought it was too Youtube-ish.

It’s about time partner! They are lucky you run the show and not me because I wouldn’t have been so tolerant for so long. You have been more than fair and the aggressive actions should be received quite well. Good call on letting the shoutbox go I would love to chat with fellow Mets fans but you cant say anything without being bullied, its just ridiculous.

I also believe that the site has become big enough to have registered users. We should look into that.

You are absolutely spot on Joe. Steps must be taken to prevent some misguided individuals from ruining this website, the sole purpose of which is to talk BASEBALL. I am sick to death of looking at the shoutbox, and seeing on-going verbal tirades where people are being attacked for their race, gender, sexuality, physical attributes, and just about anything else NOT relating to a baseball opinion. I have stopped going on shoutbox for this reason. It has turned into a circus of unpleasantness, and it’s just a handful of readers that are ruining it for everybody else.

Personally, I hate the rating system, for the very reasons you pointed out, it is merely a popularity thing and is used as a tool to vote comments down because of who said them and not what was said. The “thumbs serve no constructive purpose and should be eliminated.

As far as comment threads. I fail to understand why people cannot disagree with something posted or commented on without resorting to name-calling, insults, and hurtful statements. If you think a particular player is over-rated, or misrepresented in a piece, or comment, before you say how much the guy sucks, stop for a minute and think that that player may read what you say. Do you really want to send a message to a 20-year-old Mets farmhand who is a really good kid, that he totally sucks and is wasting his and your time by trying to make it as a baseball player? Is that really fair? I don’t think anyone on this site, knew two years ago that Lucas Duda was going to develop into the type of performer that he is becoming. How can anyone on this site presume so much about the future of a player? If you want to disagree, that’s fine, make a counter-point. Give an example of what you would have done, but don’t put people down for just being people. I’ve said this before: Mets fans are like snowflakes, everyone is different. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion without being tormented for it. Varied opinions are what makes this site so interesting.

If you still feel you are entitled to say whatever you want on here, with no regard for other people’s feelings, then perhaps you should move on to another website, you have simply worn out your welcome here.

Well done Joe. I love the site’s stories and insight into the team that the major media sites just don’t get. But I’m so tired of the constant bickering and fighting by a few handfuls of people. I have been on your site for two years and I rarely miss a day. This is the first time I have taken the time to post a comment. I look forward to a site where real fans can post their thoughts without the nonsense.
