Johan Santana Will Finish Rehab Program Saturday

The New York Mets announced today that lefthanded pitcher Johan Santana will finish his active rehabilitation program for the year on Saturday, October 8, when the Mets’ 2011 Instructional League concludes.

Santana threw 4.0 innings in an Instructional League game on Friday, September 30, but will not see any further Instructional League game action. He will long toss and play light catch through Saturday and then will enter a long period of medically prescribed rest, which will preclude him from pitching in winter ball.

“Johan feels very good and is looking forward to 2012,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “We are optimistic that Johan will be able to begin and maintain a Spring Training schedule with all other Mets pitchers next February and will be ready for the start of the 2012 season.”

  • He’s been clocked at hitting 89-90 MPH with the fastball and sitting there.
I believe that was the first report around August 1st.

So for next year, with rehab and conditioning, his fastball should sit around 90-91 MPH. After all that, interesting to see his velocity still relatively solid.

Normally, I won’t care as much about velocity, but Santana’s style of pitching relies on his great circle change – which needs a consistent fastball to be effective.

    • More than anything else,I’m concerned with his health over the course of a full season.Considering that no other pitcher has ever fully recoverd from a torn capsule and reverted back to form,he still worries me.So far Chien Ming Wang is the only other case that has made it all the way back but even he hasn’t pitched a full year yet and it took him 2 years to regain his arm strength.
I guess only time will tell but I’m not getting too overly optimistic, besides we’re talking about the Mets here. When was the last time the Mets had any good fortune go their way when it comes to injuries.I still can’t figure out how Ike missed 5 months from a little harmless looking collision.I walk into my coffee table much harder than that.

  • Hope he can come back strong enough to be as close to an ace.

Because an ace will be needed for next year.
