Which probably is another reason why a top of the rotation pitcher (Shields, Gio, Wilson, etc.) should be priority number 2 after Reyes. I get the feeling Reyes is going to wait a little while, not jump on anything so that could hamper the Mets.

To compare it to the Texans, they targeted Asomaguh, realized quickly they weren't getting him so signed Manning and Joseph. I know it's not a perfect similarity, as I think the Mets can sign Reyes, but if the Reyes negotiations go long, I hope their other preferred choices aren't snapped up.

Diaz - yea so i went back this morning to re-read some stuff on his surgery, and his was more intrusive, youre right. Shoulder surgery that are artroscopic have the high success rate, sometimes pitchers come back better(Leiter). But Sanatana surgery needed an incision, def more complicated plus youre right, fairly rare, Prior and Wang have had it. So maybe i should lower my expectations of a returning ace..

Im glad they didnt push him to return last season or this winter. Time sounds like the best bet to heal his injury. Spring training in Feb will be a full year and a half since his surgery could be just enough time where if his shoulder does respond he could be effective. Maybe second half of next season. Wangs 'success' offers hope. I have no idea how intrusive Priors sugery was but it would sux if Santana bcomes another Prior. I read Wang is throwing at same velocity which is also promising. I guess another wait and see..over and out rickeybobby

RickeyBobby! I'm not sure where you get that info from that Johans injury has a good recovery rate.First,it's a rare injury for a pitcher. Not a lot of pitchers have had this injury and no pitcher has ever fully recovered from an anterior capsule tear. The ones that make it back are never as good as they were before the injury and most end up shuttling back and forth from the DL,IE Mark Prior. Pedro Feliciano's career is pretty much over from a posterior tear.Chris Young will probably never pitch a full season unscathed again.

The one thing that the Mets are not telling their fans is that nobody has fully recovered from the surgery that Johan had which was more invasive than Wangs. And lets not forget it took Wang 2 full seasons to get back on a MLB mound and don't be shocked if he lands on the DL from a reoccurence or another shoulder issue because of the weakness of the shoulder.I'm not banking on Santana contributing next year which makes me want CJ even more.Even though I realize he's not an Ace. We can't take the field on opening day in 2012 with all 5 of the same pitchers if we expect to make a run at the WC.

You make CJ sound like a flaming pile o' dog doodies. He's not. No, he's not CC or King Felix or that range, but sure as the day is long he is not Pelfrey or AJ Burnett or the current version of Lowe. Not great, but very good.

Slotting CJ into this rotation makes the rotation better, which should effectively ease the BP. Yes, the BP still has holes, but the SP sucking or only able to go five, or ruining all the balls because they've been licking their palm... As Joe D mentioned, the BP is a coin flip more times than not, so investing heavily in that is almost more of a crap shoot than investing in an above average Lefty SP.

Basically, I'm saying Santana, CJ, Dickey, Niese, Gee is better than Santana, Niese, Dickey, Gee, Pelf. Yes, it's only 1 guy, but he slides the others back.

Now, I still think someone is going to overpay CJ ridiculously, so the whole issue will become moot, but 15 mil per for CJ wilson helps this team. Significantly. Hell, it makes Pelf expendable/tradeable. Flip Palm/tongue for a decent BP arm or even an 8th inning type would go further to making this team better.

Lastly, taking the stance that his salary will kill this team is understandable, but even with a 31 year old on a 5 year contract, assuming you get 3 good years and 1 decent year, that last year is gravy.

Id say bullpen is our biggest need, by far. Yea it'd be nice to have CJ Wilson but i think this team would be better off signing a Chien-Ming Wang type pitcher, and pass on the anchor starter this off season. And, im optimistic Santana can come back. The recovery rate for his surgury is very good. So to me we are getting a #1 starter back. I think Santana Dickey and Niese is a good start to a solid rotation. I think weve seen the last of Pelf too so hopefully the salary saved will be spent wisely. I think the only lock in our bullpen is Byrdak, it needs a total revamp.

I like the point of your article. Focus on winning is being replaced by Wilpon saga and salaries. Not that we'll ever have a yankee payroll, nor do i want to be that or them. I think if Alderson can put together a few key parts this off season and we stay healthy and are competitive during the season, i think the Mets would be inclined to make mid-season moves to add players and take on addtional payroll. Plus sometimes mid-season trades with teams that are out of it are easier then the off season when hope springs for everyone..but its a stop by step process, starting with..to Reyes or not to Reyes..

But you aren't developing a team, Your just taking 5 shots a year at KMart and hoping something good drops in your lap!

And if it does you will beat your chest and tell everyone how SMART you are for doing so!

Kinda like the way you think keeping a bat on your shoulder and letting a Pitcher give you something is an EQUAL accomplishment as Hitiing a pitch that the pitcher is hoping to get you OUIT on and getting a hit!

You know, your Ollie P comparison actually isn't that far off from CJ Wilson circa 2010. How warm and fuzzy does that make you feel about Wilson now?

I'm not exactly sure what either has to do with this convo?

I never boo'd Castillo, and I wished the best for Ollie P. He wasn't getting released under Omar so what choice did I have? I didn't defend Ollie P after he refused assignment though.

I was glad Alderson had the guts to let them both go
