There is no doubt that if the Mets can’t resign Jose there will be a big negative response from the fans. We do have Ruben Tejada waiting in the wings but even though he has showed himself to be ready to be a solid major leaguer…he is simply not a Jose Reyes!
Lowering ticket prices with an extra incentive for doing it soon is a way to raise needed revenues that could help in resigning Jose or for diving into the FA market. It will also give ownership an idea of just how pissed off the fans are and will be unless they see major moves in the off season to improve the team.

Patience will again be a virtue for fans. It is just too early to speculate!

I understand Any, Just pointing out that if your trying to tip a scale in a particular direction you have to account for EVERYTHING that will be replaced not just the one for one substitution.

Sure you can replace two 3 pound bags with a 5 pounder but thats only worth doing if you limited by the number of bags that fit on a scale!

Since MONEY/PAYROLL is not a limiting factor there is less sense in saving money as there is in keeping what is limited which is the total skill you can get into each position!

We may not get Pujols numbers from Ike, But if it’s even close to the same or half the production for 10% of the money then THAT is where you save the money your concerned with.

If we had a guy who was as good as Reyes then it would be one thing.
Is Tejada even close? And if he is doesn’t it make a ton more sense to keep Reyes and use tejada at 2B?
get your cake and eat it too!

Much as it would be unpopular (and I’m not suggesting it’s a good move) but it would be ultimatly much better to keep reyes and replace Wright with Murphy if money is really a concern.
Murphy is closer to the Ike vs Pujols than Tejada is with Reyes.
Then you use Wrights money to fix the OF!

it was more of a conceptual comment, relating to the idea of Reyes being worth that much!

But to your point, yes that would require additional changes (to bring in pujols). Either Davis gets traded (not likely) or one of them has to move to the OF.

And no, I don’t think there is any chance the Mets go after a 1B this off season, and I am not expecting a run at Pujols!

How much would they have won without Reyes this year?

You know it might sound like logic to say if he isn’t the solution he’s part of the problem…

But if you can’t hit a ball with both arms does it stand to reason you might without any?

You replace the PROBLEMS on your team not the ones whose contribution merely wasn’t enough to make up for what was around him!

And we won plenty when Reyes was hitting 290 with 40 SBs in 130 games back in 2006 and 2007!

The solution isn’t letting Reyes go the solution is to get someone who can replace the Delgado’s and Beltrans we lost who used to drive him in.
If Ike stays healthy maybe he does that! Maybe Murphy does.

But to say you don’t need the best SS in the game is pure folly!
Reyes is PRECISELY the kind of guy you spend money on!
Not these middle of the road suggestions everyone else is saying we should go after!
You want the best you have to get the best,
Because you do most often get what you paid for!

We’ve been losing for 3 years with him and we choked 2 years with him.I can’t see giving an oft-injured player a long term big money deal.If we were that one player away,then different.We’re no where near being a contending team.We have way too many holes to fill.

I watched the garbage from 77-83.I’ll watch the team without Reyes.If you’re a fan,you watch.If they sign Reyes fine but if he walks I won’t shed a tear.We haven’t won a thing since 2006 so as far as I’m concerned not one player HAS to be resigned or can’t be traded(Wright).We can finish 4th without them.

The Wilpons lst lost a bundle of money, and in that case could not create more of it to fix this 2011 team by spending more money that they did not have. And of top of that they also lost over $70 millon last year season. Yet it does look like they won almost all of their case in the court room.

So I feel they need more time to see how they could make it all better. Because not only are they fans of the Mets, it is also a business for them. So they will fix their business, for they always seem to do it.

Winning is important to get a good attendance. But the excitement and drive to bring people (also outstanding player brings people into the park).

And in Jose’s case that is exactly what is happening. It slowed up after he had his medical problem come up, yet he was still bringing people in. But when he is perfect and shooting for the 350 zone along with all of the other jazz, hardly any one can keep up to him.

Few player in the history of the game ever have the talent that he has. And they deserve the $ for it.

The age old saying has never been more true – ‘It takes money to make money’. Fans will come back AFTER the Mets put a winning team on the field – not before.

At the risk of beating a dead horse – the Mets are in the number one market in the baseball world and the Wilpons – in their effort to secure the ownership and make sure that Jeff will one day run the franchiese – are in the process of lowering the payroll 30 – 40 per cent from two years ago. And all this is happening despite the team have some major holes to fill.

It’s pretty pathetic.
