Braves Get Hot Stove Started; Trade Derek Lowe To Indians

According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Braves have traded starting pitcher Derek Lowe to the Cleveland Indians.

The Braves will get 23 year old minor league reliever, Chris Jones who is currently in Single-A and is not very highly regarded. Atlanta will also pay all but $5 million of Lowe’s remaining $15 million salary.

Lowe was 9-17 with a 5.05 ERA in 34 starts last season for the Braves.

Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog thinks this could be a precursor for the Braves to make a move for Jose Reyes, but I don’t see it.

  • I don’t see that. That looks more like the deal the Mets made with the Brewers for Rodriguez. Just moving a bad contract.

    • DONAL IF U THINK LOWE’S CONTRACT WAS BAD BY PROVIDING A 40-29 RECORD OVER 3 YEARS FOR $45M IN WHAT CATEGORY DO U PLACE SANTANA’S 40-25 PERFORMANCE OVER 3 ACTIVE YRS FOR 82.5M
AND MORE THAN LIKELY COSTING US REYES TO BOOT!

WORST SIGNING IN THE HISTORY OF FLUSHING BASEBALL! YET NOT ONE SPORTSWRITER HAS FIGURED THAT ONE OUT YET, WHERE ARE THE DICK YOUNGS WHEN U REALLY,REALLY NEED THEM ON TOP OF EVERYTHING HIS CURRENT PHYSICAL CONDITION MEANS HE’S ONLY EDIBLE(49.5M STILL OWED THIS 33YR OLD D/L RESIDENT) HE IS NOT DEALABLE ONLY RELERASABLE.

REMEMBER, THIS WAS NOT A MINAYA NEGOTIATED DEAL; BUT THE SOLE PURVUE/RESPONSIBILITY OF THE “PRIDE OF PALM BEECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE”(THE FIGHTING PANTHERS), JEFF WILPON.

MORE THAN LIKELY SANTANA FAILS TO PROVIDE DOUBLE DIGIT VICTORIES IF HE PITCHES ALL SEASON, NO SETBACKS AS HIS NYM “HEALTHY” AVG WIN SEASON IS MERELY 13.3 WINS OF WHICH 75% IS 9.999… AND HE’S UNLIKELY TO BE MORE THAN 75% OF HIS REMAINING ABILITY

TO MY RECOLLECTION HE’S FAILED TO PROVIDE EVEN AS MANY DOMINATING GAMES AS TRACHSEL’S 2 ONE-HITTERS AS A MET.

IT’S HIGH TIME WE STOP USING CARDBOARD CUTOUTS OF OUR INJURED ‘ACES’ AS THE #1 AS WE DID WITH PEDRO IN ’07, SANTANA IN ’11 & NOW ’12.

      • Counting a pitcher’s wins is not an accurate way to assess his production. It’s not his fault there have been problems with run support, defense and bullpen.

The plain fact is, Santana was an absolute beast for most of his time here. Yes, he’s old and his injury will most likely prevent him from returning to anything close to what we were used to, but the bigger problem is the Mets not taking advantage of the dominating performances he gave us.

        • SORRY DONAL, UNLESS HIS ERA IS 0.00 HIS GOAL IS TO OUT ZERO HIS MOUND OPPONENT & SINCE HIS RECORD AGAINST ATL,PHL,NYY OUR MOST CONTENTOUS OPPONENTS IS A DISMAL 9-13(’08-’10) THERE IS ABSOLUTELYY NO EXCUSE. THE RUN SUPPORT ARGUEMENT FOR A SOCALLED ‘ACE’ IS A PITIFUL EXCUSE AS BEGINNING ON OPENING DAY HE MORE THAN LIKELY FACES HIS OPPOSITE #1 OPONENT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT & AS SUCH #1s RARELY GET EXCESSIVE RUN SUPPORT, RUN-SUPPORT IS TYPICALLY THE MEANINGFUL STAT FOR MID-ROTATIONERS BY COMPARING LOWE’S RESULTS TO SANTANA’S IT’S GENERALLY ACCEPTED THAT ATLANTA HAS BEEN OFFENSIVELY CHALLENGED DURING LOWE’S TENURE.

SIMILARLY IS THERE A MORE OFFENSIVELY CHALLENGED NL CONTENDER THAN SF? HOW MUCH HAS THAT NEGATED THEIR PITCHING RESULTS?

MAKE ALL THE EXCUSES U WANT THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO VIABLE REASON FOR KEEPING SANTANA ON THE ROSTER AS A 33+ YR OLD PITCHER EARNING 25M+ PER SEASON FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 2Y WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CUT PAYROLL TO 100M RANGE.

PAYING 1 DISAPPOINTING PLAYER NEARLY 25% OF THAT ALLOCATION CAUSNG U TO “LAYOFF” YOUR MOST PRODUCTIVE PLAYERS TO ACCOMODATE.

          • Santana faced the opposing ace less than 1/4 of his appearances as a Met. Run support is important for every pitcher. Even Nolan Ryan needed runs support.

You want to move Santana and that contract? Well, ya, but good luck doing it.

And don’t say he was the worse deal the Mets have ever made. Not with Jason Bay patrolling left field.

            • DONAL… JASON BAY? REALLY? LET’S REVIEW…

JAON BAY, 4Y 66M DISAPPOINTMENT FOR 2Y WITH A POSSIBILITY FOR BOUNCING BACK THE LAST 2 W/REVISED DIMENSIONS.

JOHAN SANTANA 6Y 137.5M DISAPPOINTMENT FOR 3Y, 3 SURGERIES, 3 REHAB PERIODS WITH THE LAST 3Y BEING STILL UNDETERMINED AS TO HIS ABILITY TO LAST LONG ENOUGH TO EVER GET ANOTHER DECISION, LET ALONE HIS 41st MET VICTORY REGARDLESS OF EXCUSE. BRAVES CLASSIFIED LOWE AS A DIAPPOINTMENT WITH 40 Ws OVER 3Y FOR 45M SPENT; WHILE SANTANA’S CONTRIBUTED THE SAME TOTAL OF VICTORIES(@ 88M)(WINS ARE THE ONLY MEASURE OF TRUE VALUE VIS A VIS MONEY SPENT.. IT IS STILL A STRONG UNKNOWN AS TO WHETHER SANTANA WILL EVER PITCH @ A MAJOR LEAGUE QUALITY LEVEL LET ALONE A #1 WGILE HE’S STILL GUARANTEED 49.5M OVER THE NEXT 2 QUESTIONABLE SEASONS.
I’M RELATIVELY CONFIDENT BAY WILL REGISTER AT LEAST 1 OFFICAL AB MORE; NOT SO MUCH WITH SANTANA Re. IP HOPE SHOULD BE RESERVED FOR THINGS LIKE WINNING THE LOTTERY, OR OTHER POSITIVE UNKNOEWN OUTCOMES,; NOT WHERRTHER A 25M/YR ACE WILL EVER PITCH AGAIN.
SORRY, BAY’S DISAPPOINMENT TO DATE IS A BLIP COMPARED TO THE POTENTIAL FOR SANTANA TO CRASH & BURN.

WHILE SOME WILL EXCUSE SANTANA FOR HIS LOW ERA & WHIP. THAT’S REALLY BIG OF U, YET HE’S NOT BEING PAID FOR THOSE; HE’S BEING PAID TO PITCH WINNING BASEBALL DESPITE LOW RUN SUPPORT(LOW ERA & WHIP SHOULD OFFSET RUNSUPPORT NEED. IT’S TOO OFTEN THAT SANTAN YIELDS INOPPORTUNE LOW NUMBERS TO BE PAIFD IN THAT STRATOSPHERE HE SHOULD OVERCOME OBSTACVLES NOT BE EXCUSED BY THEM MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IN AN OUTRIGHT DUEL SANTANA BLINKS FIRST, UNFORTUNATELY

IT’S NOT SO MUCH AS HE’S A BAD SIGNING; BUT WAS A GOOD IDEA AT THE WRONG TIME & PLACE SUCCESSFULLY RUN MLB TEAMS INVESTING HEAVILY INTO A #1 SP TYPICALLY FOLLOW THE PLANS OF MOST INTELLIGENT MONARCHIES AS THEY STRIVER FOR NOT JUST AN HEIR TO THE THRONE; BUT PREFER AN HEIR & A SPARE. AS HERE WE GO AGAIN INTO A LONG SEASON FEATURING A 25M CARDBOARD CUTOUT AT THE TOP OF OUR ROTATION. LUDICROUSLY CRIMINAL.

  • the Braves wanted to unload him before the 2011 season but there were no takers. He is a real Jekyl and Hyde type picture. He pitches great for a few games and then looks like you know what. He mayy be rejuvenated in Cleveland and he had a dwi in Atlanta a few months ago and is happy to get out of town. Thye really don’t need him as they have Juergens and Hanson ready to return to the rotation. I think this move has nothing to do with Reyes.

  • purely a salary dump.

and actually it seems to set the market value of Pelf ($5mill) based on the numbers of last year.

    • It’s MORE than just purely a salary dump even though i know you like to think of baseball more in the shape of currency than actuality.

You think the Indians are doing the Braves a favor? Of course not. They see value in adding a veteran like Lowe to their staff and they’re only paying 5 million. So what if he winds up being a 3 or 4 or even #5 pitcher.

Also the Braves have some young pitchers that are coming around now so they don’t need Lowe anymore. If that were not the case Lowe would still be with the Braves.

So there’s MUCH MORE to the story than just a “salary dump” There was some actual BASEBALL sense used in coming to this decision.

      • This for the Braves is nothing more than a salary dump and an open roster spot for Julio Teheran which was blocked with Lowe there. They save 5 million which they can now use to go out and add a bat.For Cleveland they’re hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with only 5 million dollars that they most likely won’t get on the free agent market. Not much more than that to this story only for you who’s trying to prove the Mets are not trying and other teams are.

        • Other teams ARE trying and Mets are not. They’re not even speaking to Jose Reyes while the Yankees are doing it the RIGHT WAY and communicating their interest to CC.
Cleveland did not go out of their way to make this deal for nothing. It was MORE than a salary dump. They get a decent pitcher, while not what he used to be, can still help win games and help the younger guys. And paying most of Lowe’s salary is not exactly a salary dump to me because all the Indians are paying is $5 million bucks.

If the Braves don’t have those young pitchers coming up then rest assured they DO NOT get rid of Derek Lowe. It was more than just a salary dump. The Braves current circumstances made freeing up Lowe available.

          • “If the Braves don’t have those young pitchers coming up then rest assured they DO NOT get rid of Derek Lowe.”

Just to clarify, having a stacked minor league system will prevent a team from signing or hanging on to old, average-at-best players with a burden of a contract? Great point.

  • Pure salary dump plus clearing a spot for a younger and better pitcher.
