And Here’s To You, Mr. Alderson

Mr. Alderson

(Sing to the tune of Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel)

And here’s to you, Mr. Alderson
Freddie loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
Cut payroll please, Mr. Alderson
It doesn’t really matter how we play
(Hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey)

We’d like to have you spend a lot less cash than you require
We need to make it look like it’s your plan
Look around you Sandy and you’ll see the reasons why
Stroll around my friend and please don’t mind the fans that cry

And here’s to you, Mr. Alderson
Freddie loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
Cut payroll please, Mr. Alderson
It doesn’t really matter how we play
(Hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey)

Hide our true intentions so the fans will never know
Dress it up with fiction, play the fool
It’s our little secret, just another sordid tale
Keep it from the press or we will certainly catch hell

Coo, coo, ca-choo, Mr. Alderson
Freddie loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
Cut payroll please, Mr. Alderson
It doesn’t really matter how we play
(Hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey)

Sitting in the owners box on Sunday afternoon
A crowd of fans are walking through the gates
See the lines at Shake Shack, they know nothing of our views
Ev’ry way you look at it, they lose

What have you done, Mr. Alderson
Mets nation turns their desperate eyes to you (Woo, woo, woo)
What’s that you say, Mr. Alderson
Jose Reyes has left and gone away
(Hey, hey, hey… hey, hey, hey…)

This is what I do when watching post season games that don’t feature the Mets…

  • this man has NEVER use the word “championship” or “winning team” in his press conference, is all about payroll, money saving, payroll, and payroll… i stand by on my thoughts, he’s here to cut payroll for the wilpons, nothing else.

    • You are NEVER paying attention either.

Just because he uses big words you don’t understand.

      We haven’t had a championship in 25 years, but it’s ALL Alderson’s fault………..

    • Aren’t those (championships/winning teams) givens?

    • Exactly alex68. I had been giving Alderson the benefit of the doubt, even after reading all the reasons why not to. Until I saw Bayonne and you say this, it finally hit home that he is NOT talking about anything but chopping money. (if it was someone else’s comment, my apologies for not giving credit).

      • oklahoma, me and bayonne were discussing this on the mets chat. he’s NOT once in the once ive seen and read have mention championship. but, his legion of fans don’t care whether he says that or not because they’re too concern with financial situations, not spending money on good players, but worrying about who we can get at the 99 cents store

        • “he’s NOT once in the once ive seen and read have mention championship”

          and there we go.

Of course, if someone does go and find him mentioning the words “championship” or “winning” the cavemen will go nuts and start yelling things like “HE’S ALL TALK!” “HE’S LYING TO US!”

“his legion of fans don’t care whether he says that or not because they’re too concern with”

actually winning instead of just talking about it.

Ya, those “actions speak louder than words” losers just don’t get it. You win by talking about winning.

          • donal,

what he’s done so far, and him NOT mentioning it if you combine the 2 what does that tell you? exactly what i’ve been saying the whole time, he’s not here to win, just to cut payroll.

which is fine, but i wonder if that’s the plan what exactly his legion of fans will say after they’ve been had!?!

        • In all seriousness, did you watch Mets Weekly this week and hear how Collins described Alderson?

  • Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to Alderson Avenue:

    Taylor Tankersley
    Taylor Bucholz
    Brad Emaus
    Boof Bonser
    Chin Lung Hu
    Chris Young
DJ Carassco – for 2 years!!
    Pedro Beato

Be proud Alderson Avenue, be proud.

    • Right, because all the people acquired in the last 25 years were so wonderful and brought many titles……….oh wait……………

    • Don’t forget Tim Byrdak

  • LOL Joe!

  • GENIUS!

  • This is pretty good. You should send it in to Boomer & Carton and see if Al Dukes uses it on the air.

  • So, there’s an image I really need to burn out of my head. Where did I put that soldering iron?

  • by the way, mets are reducing ticket sales, again.. basically, i know why??

  • Bayonne, You forgot Capuano, beato, izzy, collins, wheeler and dumpin KRod. I know we didn’t win this year but I didn’t expect to. Alderson might be here to slash payroll but if in doing that he turns this club into a build within system I am all for it. I was tired of the reactionary way that Omar did buisness (always one step behind) and was ready for a change. I really do not know the front office motives and am not going to speculate about Reyes. I will be tuning in next year to watch the Mets and their growth as young team.

    • I didn’t forget Capuano or Collins. I know there were some bright spots but overall Alderson had an absolutely AWFUL off season last year. That’s a lot of lousy signings in one year..and his first year to boot.

As indicated before there were a lot of other players he could have gotten to help us contend in 2011 and obviously he either Team Alderson didn’t do their homework or just did a terrible job of evaluating themselves. I wouldn’t exactly call Beato and Izzy major contributors although if Alderson made at least some semblance of an attempt to win probably Izzy could have been a part of that as well.

And I’m sorry but I don’t buy into the notion that all levels of competition must cease to exist in order to wait for your farm to grow. And there’s no guarantee in that either. Oh and judging by our past history what if you sit and wait the next few years, watch the team not compete, and then when your kids and draft picks are finally ready they get hurt. What if that happens too? That’s why you play to win NOW..and build for the future. You can do both at the same time.

And I don’t know if i was tired of the way Omar did business although i think he want too much the FA route, but whether i like it or not the bottom line is we had a chance for post season play 3 years in a row and we lost out ON THE FIELD. As unfair as that sounds and you could look back and say he should have done this or that at the trade deadline, the player’s fate was ALWAYS in their hands and we lost.

      • I agree that the fate is in the hands of the players for sure. I am reserving judgement due to the mess that Alderson waked into. There are always players out there that surprise eveybody and i don’t believe that can be accounted for ie Humber this year. Carassco was a dumb signing for sure an I would like to see a more competative team for sure. I don’t believe that the “kids” are always the answer either. When you play in NY you should be able to sign what you need and not worry about how crippling a 20 mil contract is going to be. My beef really started with omar after the Putz trade. I thought that was an insane deal and then to let him walk without getting anything in return. Maybe Sandy’s only job is to get rid of expendatures, I have no idea. I know I wouldn’t have wanted to have to get 2 starters and a whole bullpen with twelve dollars like he did. I believe that like everything time will tell. Alderson could build a dynasty or turn the Mets into the Pirates. I am a believer of building within or at least producing a deep farm system. As far as the other players he could have got I didn’t see them at the time but I am not a GM but I did stay at a holiday…oh nevermind lol.

      • And you complain about Agee and Hindsight!

and keep in mind, other than DJ (and his salary is relative peanuts), none of those guys are still with the team (well, beato is, and that is a good thing, he can go to the minors), or clogging up a roster spot or major amount of payroll (like bay).

He also had no payroll to spend, which pretty much forced shopping at the discount rack, and those guys are the biggest crapshoot around.

        • What are you talking about?

I’ve been complaining about his off season since…..that offseason!

What hindsight are you talking about? I’m not second guessing at all so where is the second guessing?

Oh because a lot of those guys aren’t on the team now? That’s an excuse in Alderson’s favor??? Funny I look at it the complete opposite way. How the hell can you sign a bunch of guys during the off season and some of them are off the team before the season is over and you want those guys not to count because they’re not on the team? What the hell kind of thinking is that?

He had ENOUGH to spend to make smarter decisions. I’m not talking about money even though you base EVERYTHING on that. I’m talking about making better decisions with the money you have and made TERRIBLE evaluations with the money he had. Vinny B already listed a bunch of guys that, if Team Alderson was smarter and really WANTED to win they could have gotten.

But in my opinion Alderson made a token gesture to try and help the lineup he inherited because I think he believed they had no chance and he wasn’t gonna spend money to try. And you can’t do that around here because it’s gonna catch up to him.

          Where am i second guessing?

          • It surprises me how personal things get around here sometimes. I am after knowledge and a better understanding so I apologize if I have started an argument. I was simply trying to understand why Alderson’s moves were terrible. Every year teams sign guys that don’t stick it’s part of baseball. Emaus hung around a little to long but so be it and Beato ran out of gas or maybe has a nagging injury or something. But I thought Sandy did a fair job and am looking forward to future success. Others see it differently and I am trying to understand why so that maybe I can better evaluate the team for the future.

            • There are people who have hated Alderson since about day 3. Why? Cause he doesn’t believe in patching the bald tire and proclaiming the car good to go.

He also likes to take a more careful, longer term view of moves he might make and how they might impact the future.

He didn’t make the big splashy off season signing of a guy that would put us over the top like we have had GM’s do here in the past.

Guys like Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar, Vince Coleman, Brett Saberhagen, Billy Wagner, Moises Alou, Scott Schowenweiss, Jeremy Burnitz, Roger Cedeno, Kevin Appier, and Jason Bay.

Those are the types of moves a popular GM makes. The kind that galvanize the Fan Base. Juice up the pre season ticket sales and sell a lot of jerseys in the Team Store.

Alderson is more of a grump. A grinch. He didn’t give away any high draft choices or prospects for guys like that.

              • To the poster named “any”

                This is second guessing.

                • It’s also flat out LYING too.

                  • If I am reading you right is it your contention that with the right signings the team from this year could have been in the playoff’s. I did not read the post about who Alderson should have signed so I am in the dark about how this could have been done. Please clear this up for me or at least give me an idea of what you meant. Thank you for your time.

                    • It is my contention that if Alderson made a better attempt to win last off season, and who knows maybe he did but just did a horrendous job of evaluation and was outsmarted by other GMs,
we would have had a team more equipped to fight for the playoffs.

Making the playoffs is entirely different story because there are teams that are picked to win and don’t make the playoffs.

I’m just saying a better of more smarter effort should have been made to get the roster he inherited more support. And he was given the nucleus of a team that could fight for contention when he arrived so it wasn’t a complete mess he inherited. The mess you referred to probably applies more to behind the scenes stuff than on the field because the roster to contend was already there, it just needed help.

                    • Resign Mike Jacobs, Gary Matthews Jr., Omir Santos, Mike Hessman, Frank Cattalonotto. Firm up the bullpen with Scott Schowenweiss and Guillermo Mota, use Perez as a situational LOOGY and make Castillo the hitting coach.

                    • To be honest, I think Castillo would make a pretty decent coach.

            • Better get used to it. People like him at this site hates productive discussion. Anyone who disagree with them will be shot down and jeered at even if the facts support his argument. Screw facts and logical thought, it’s their way or the highway. The worst of their kind resort of trolling and insults once they run out of coherent arguments.

          • The Mets DFA’d 12 guys last year (year 6)

Jacobs, GMJ, Cora, Cattalonotto, Arias, Castillo, Perez, Barajas, Blanco, Carter, Tatis, Hessman. and those were just the hitters.

I wonder who we didn’t sign.

        • Do you know what hindsight and second guessung is?

Bayonne has been bitching anout Alderson’s offseason since January. If anything he has shown great foresight.

          • bayonne, As far as the condition of the roster I have to disagree with ya a bit. The rotation was Pelf, Niese. I don’t think dickey was resigned by then but maybe he was. Who knows what would have happened if Wright and Davis stayed healthy maybe he would have kept Beltran but I thought the bench looked pretty good after it shook out. I was more trying to figure out who specifically he should have went after. I thought the bullpen he built looked alot like the Indians in major league ( who the F are these guys) lol. As far as a mess I was referring to it was the rotation. Starters are so expensive and rarely come through when they are over 30. Lee is an obvious exception but he wasn’t coming here. The guys on the field were all ready their so I don’t see how that is Aldersons fault. Maybe he could have found a better solution for second base but I thought it was at least interesting trying to guess who was going to play second today and they all did a fair job.

          • However the hell that got through the filter, I have no clue – but it damn sure made me laugh.

      • You are the first to call people out for second guessing, now take a guess at what YOU are doing right now? Shocking I know.

You completely ignore the facts, make up crap for your own agenda. So much money was tied up in BAD Contracts from that GM you genuflect to, widely reported how limited the budged was, and you and your goons continue with the AWFUL off season.

        Get a clue dude seriously………….

Too bad Moises Alou wasn’t available, because signing over the hill has been has worked in the past.

Funny how you hear that any success is a carry over from Omar, so when the team went to the post season in 06, none of that had anything to do with the previous admin right?

Take your own second guessing and double standards and come back when you actually have something to say that makes sense.

        • joesmith,

by 2006 that team was all minaya, he basically patch the bullpen together, other than tom glavine and traschel everyone else in the Starting rotation was his addition, other than reyes and wright everyone else in the lineup was his addition, he made good trades and put that team together. with that being said alderson started horrible for his first offseason, the excuse was he didn’t have money to work with, NOW he does, he in my opinion started the wrong way by already giving a new contract to byrdak who is just awful, that is not a good way to go into your second offseason as a gm.

  • Is this the new seventh inning stretch song?
