Buckner was a very good player and did not deserve most of the flak as mentioned above, McNamara, Stanley and Schiraldi deserved equal to more than he did. If you look at the replay, Mookie might have beaten him to first as Buckner picks up his head Mookie is already close to first.

Hey Squidoo, Schiraldi is the stuff of nightmares of Red Sox fans. I have many close friends who are, and they have more ire towards him than Stanley or Buckner. Ask Steve BArtman what it’s like to do something visible, I’m sure Buckner feels the same way. No one was happier when Buckner made an error than Stanley, IMO.

Hey OMF – it was referred to in many texts…if I’m not mistaken, it was also in Bad Guys Won by Jeff Pearlman. Most Red Sox documentaries also harp on it. I think Buckner was their best overall 1B, but he was aching and falling apart and usually in later innings he was replaced by Dave Stapleton. Glad I could be of service to ya

Nice job, but you wrote something that was a little puzzling.

Did you know, as a “for instance,” that then-Red Sox manager John McNamara usually replaced Buckner defensively in later innings but opted to keep him in the game so he could “celebrate?” Where’s the ire towards him for putting the proverbial cart before the horse?

I had never heard that about that incident before in all these years. In fact I thought Buckner “was” their best defensive first baseman? They say you learn something new everyday, I certainly just did.

Enjoyed your post and I agree with your sentiments. I always felt bad for Buckner as well. Seems to me both Schiraldi and Stanley deflected much of the heat from Red Sox Nation. I can’t believe how a great career like his has been tarnished by one error after all those great plays he was known for as one of the games best defensive first basemen at the time. 25 years later an he’s still having to answer questions about that play.
