A New York Baseball Season
It was certainly interesting to have the Mets finish out of the playoffs, but then to also have the Yankees play themselves out of the first round…….
Same difference.
What is happening to MLB?
In a year when the new, ‘shopping mall’ stadiums like Citi Field were all over the place, the field area is never full and the fans come for lunch, shopping, playing games or just strolling, but never just to watch a baseball game.
Who are these people? It seems like only a couple of years ago that we were all happily sitting in Shea, nibbling on hot dogs and Cracker Jacks to our hearts content and watching every single minute of our dear Mets.
These were the Tom Seaver Mets, the Mike Piazza Mets, the Keith Hernandez Mets – guys who really could play and did. In fact the names on the early teams also showed up on records of the day, and big headlines in the papers.
I’m not implying that Citi Field is a jinx, I’m just saying that it is a big distraction. It has too many other things to do rather than sitting in your seat and keeping score in your program. However, I’m old fashioned – I do keep a scorecard.
The Wilpon legal problems – going on for a couple of years now, are another issue altogether. The Kings of the Secrets, Fred and Jeffie are nowhere to be found, and rarely acknowledge the press for anything. No wonder the writers are scowling. Sandy Alderson, the new Wilpon annointed General Manager is as quiet as an FBI agent.
Amidst all this, we have thousands of the best baseball fans in America – Yankee fans are different than the Mets, there are many more of them, nor do they holler and cheer as much. What’s a baseball game for?
“Take me out to the ball game – Take me out with the crowd – Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks – I don’t know if I’ll ever come back – for it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out at the old ball game.”
Brings back the memories, doesn’t it…..

This will be my final column, thank you for your support.
I’m going to miss your columns as you gave the readers so much information on the Mets players, coaches and managers that others didn’t seem to care about. You gave the human nature side of them that we didn’t see that often.
