Vote David Wright For Man Of The Year!

If you scooted over to Mets.com after tonight’s 10-6 loss to the Cubs at Citi Field, you would have been greeted by this blaring urge to vote David Wright for Man of the Year.

They say that timing is everything, and in this particular case the timing couldn’t have been worse after Wright had a terrible game at the plate, going 0-for-5, striking out twice and leaving seven runners on base. Not exactly a banner day for the Mets veteran third baseman.

That’s Wright seconds after he popped out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning with the score knotted at 4-4. The Cubs actually walked Lucas Duda to load the bases and pitch to Wright. The Cubs would score six runs in the top of the 12th inning to seal the deal.

On the bright side, David Wright did don a first responder’s hat when he was in the dugout in between innings. So there’s that.

Go get’em next time, David.

  • man of the year???? look, sigh……. where do i even begin…
this guy is a known choker in the city of new york, it was proven once again last night, he’s a good kid, good guy whatever, i don’t know him, as a baseball player, unless you have a team full of superstar who can take away the pressure you cannot have this guy as your front guy to lead a team, there is soooo much he’s missing in order to be a leader is not even funny.
what just gets to me is that on a night where, ok the stadium was full, but outside of that NOONE was watching this game because of sunday night football with the jets playing, so not even when the pressure is off he can come trough, when the opp team is walking LUCAS DUDA to pitch to you, that shows the lack of fear and respect they have for you.. not once, but twice he failed on a night where he was nominated (god knows why) “MAN OF THE YEAR”.. down the line we’ll be reading “trade of the year” with david wright as the main piece of a trade for young pitching porspects.. who would’ve thunk it, from a future SUPERSTAR in 2006-2007 to a choker in 2008, to just an avg player in 2011.. all kinds of excuses have been made for this guy, i say no more. he is what he is.. a player who will never succeed in NY and under the pressure as we would’ve hoped for, maybe it was the stadium who knows what got in his head, but all i know is, he’s not man of the year to me..

    • He would have hit a walk off grand slam and you will would still come up with an excuse to kill the guy.

You and your double standards are embarrassing to those that actually watch the game.

    • Alex, let me set you straight….again. Where do I even begin.

First of all, it’s very clear you’re entirely unaware what this award is for, who nominated him and why. All that ignorance in one paragraph is enough to discredit anything you say, but I’m going to pile it on.

Secondly, this is a MAN of the year award. Not a league MVP award or even a team MVP. The nominees are nominated by their TEAMMATES, not the media, not bloggers and certainly not ignorant fans like you. This is taken directly from his profile page for the nominees:

“A team leader on and off the field, David Wright always takes the time to visit and bring smiles to the faces of military personnel and young hospital patients. His David Wright Foundation provides aid and assistance to support the health, emotional development and education of needy children in greater Tri-State communities and in his Norfolk, Va., hometown, with a special emphasis on enhancing the quality of life for multiple sclerosis patients. This year, his Foundation’s signature Las Vegas Nights raised $60,000 for the New York City Ronald McDonald House and $111,000 for Virginia’s Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.”

Read the first eight words again. Remember, this is coming from his teammates, the people behind the closed clubhouse doors. I don’t care one way or another who the team “leader” is. It’s a stupid concept in regards to what we as fans see on the field. If the guys who know Wright as a man think he’s a leader behind closed doors, that’s good enough for me, because all I get to see him do is play.

Not to mention all the charitable work he does. There are far bigger things in this life than baseball, or did you not watch the pre-game last night? Step back for a second and look around pro sports. How many other young, good looking players given the world at such a young age have been as admirable in their handling of the situation as Wright, especially being in New York.

That’s what the award is about, far more than anything he does on the field. IF you’ll re-read his profile, you’ll notice there isn’t one mention of any stat or number or baseball-related scenario.

I’m going to quibble with HoJo here and say given the what the country was feeling and dealing with yesterday, the timing actually couldn’t have been better.

      • xtreemicon,

i’ve always say wright is a good kid and seems like a good guy, idk i don’t know him outside of his met uniform on the street, (although met him once), but mu whole comment was based on him being a player, not a humanitarian.. look, my wife is DEEP into donations and charity, so i know a little bit about that since i sign the checks, but i tell you something, as a player, as a PLAYER was that i wrote my comment.. man of the year, based on charity then yes, he can be nominated, not as a player imo..

        • Again, you seem to be missing the point. Reading comprehension….

He was not nominated for his player stats. You may have wanted to take the opportunity for Wright being nominated Player of the Year for his humanitarian works to go over – again – your opinion of his player stats but what does one have to do with the other?

‘man of the year???? look, sigh……. where do i even begin…’

You could have begun by saying something like ‘he probably is deserving of this nomination’….before you started ripping into his player stats. Then maybe your opinion of him being a ‘chocker’ would have been debated on that opinion. Instead, you’ve come across as saying he doesn’t deserve the nomination b/c he’s a ‘chocker’ or stinks, or whatever your opinion is.

          Get it now?

          • when did i say he doesn’t deserve this nomination??? i said this time and time again, good kid, good and applaud what he does wit the community, but a CHOKER..

          • Carlos Beltran has a foundation every bit as legitimate and helpful as Wright’s so what’s the difference? And Beltran actually HELPED the Mets win most of this year.

Carlos has a foundation too so why isn’t he a man of the year nominee?

            • Because he’s a SF Giant.

              • I have a sneaky position if the situation was reversed you people would still find an excuse to nominate Wright saying that while he was HERE all these years he also helped the team win and that the trade was just too recent to prevent him from being nominated.

So I don’t buy this BS for one second

                • I know Beltran does a LOT with his work off the field. Had he been a current part of the team, then yeah, we can discuss Beltran vs. Wright. But he isn’t.

I would like to see if there were other possibilities of the Mets who could have been an option.

                • Why don’t you take it up with the players in the club house? You know, the guys who nominated him?

                • Another hater, hating just because it’s about David Wright.

ONCE again this has NOTHING to do with actual stats.

Each day the ignorance grows deeper on this site.

                • LOL ‘you people would still find an excuse to nominate Wright’?

None of the fans nominated anyone. Did you read the article? His teammates nominated him. Youngest MLB player ever to have a charity started with his name. Nomination is deserving. I don’t care if he had the worst stats on the team. One has nothing to do with the other. Don’t know why that is so hard to understand for some.

              • Also Jose Reyes has donated money and helped turn empty lots into baseball fields for poor kids in the Dominican Republic..AND having a banner year for the Mets so why can’t he be nominated?

                • Ask Reyes’ Teammates.

              • And because this nomination has nothing to do with who helped or did not help their team on the field this year.

Not sure why some on here can’t seem to grasp that fact.

                • It is complimentary of Wright, who they were told by Francesa is unclutch yada yada yada. They are so committed to the idea that they need to ride this crazy train off the rails.

                  • so wright is not UNCLUTCH?????

                    • choo choo, baby

                • Yes it does, it says: “for his play on and off the field, vote for David Wright as one of the six finalist in the Marvin Miller Man of the Year award untill this monday at noon ET.”

I guess you missed the part where it says “for his play ON AND off the field.” So according to that, his play on the field has a lot to do with it.

                  • which means he shouldn’t have been voted in. he hasn’t done jack this year..

                  • Vinny is correct with what he said. It was for his play on the field but more accurately play that inspire others to higher levels of achievement both on the field and with their contributions to their communities. Vinny is also correct when he says you had until Noon Eastern Standard Time.

            • LMAO !!! bayonne, i DID TELL YOU !!!!

      • I see both sides of this argument. If, two years ago, Luis Castillo had been nominated for Man of the Year, it would have been difficult to ignore the baseball part.
David doesnt seem to be living up to the potential, both hitting and fielding. I think if I could get a good starter and a fair reliever for him, I just might do it. Pitching is so important. Pops

  • With all due respect, David Wright and company flat out STUNK last night….. How many times did they have an opportunity to out that game to rest and completely FAILED! It was awful watching Wright and Bay with RISP with less than 2 outs and just didn’t get the job done!

    • put that game to rest

    • rachel,

let me correct you real quick, david wright and company flat out Stunk comment was wrong.. DAVID WRIGHT FLAT OUT STUNK!!!!!!!
HE was the one who the not one but TWO chances to finish the game yet didn’t. but since 2008 i am not surprised at his lack of clutch gene. he has none, all of you that are surprised about this now have been missing the boat that sailed LOOOOOOOOONG time ago, i’ve gotten banned and basically destroy for calling out this guy, yet, i’ve been WRIGHT all along, he’s unclutch, a stat padder, and only is a leader when delgado, reyes and beltran were taking all the heat away from him; a good kid, not a superstar..

      • Why dont you just stop ragging on him on a daily basis. You seem to want to put Wright on the same level as losers like Oliver Perez and he clearly isn’t even on the same level. Wright is a solid player, maybe it was your high expectations that ultimately turned you against him when he failed to meet them. The bottom line is that he’s a very productive third baseman and one of the best in the league.

        • have we been watching the same 3rd baseman?? i am sorry, MY EXPECTATIONS?? the guy was producing numbers like beltran if not better! he was top 5 MVP in 2007, how were those my expectations?? the guy was an all star 5 years straight, and the fan base had him pegged as a godsend.. come on man, some of us were on metsblog, and when we started to call him out we got BANNED, in here the same thing, some ppl were really upset if wright’s name was mention next to unclutch or choker.. come on man.. for once ADMIT the reality that this guy is just an avg player.. and a KNOWN CHOKER

          • People usually admit to something when it’s true……..

      • I was trying to be kind! I wasn’t surprised at all…..

  • I would vote for Wright for the stunt he did wearing the FDNY hat in the dugout last night.

    • I cannot believe there are 2 people that voted this ‘dislike’. The kid shows some respect for the occasion and 2 people have a problem with that? SMH indeed.

      • I’m one of those people who gave it a dislike because i’m really not interested in a guy with a huge reputation of choking and failing this team offensively and defensively in big spots…. putting on a cap for 1 or 2 minutes in a dugout ESPECIALLY when that guy had 3 CHANCES to WIN THE GAME for us and failed ALL THREE TIMES! And on a day when the attention was on Mike Piazza’s COMPLETELY OPPOSITE performance when the Mets needed a win – he delivered

        • Of course you were one of those people who disliked that gesture.

Still don’t understand what that gesture has to do with his stats on the field. I truly believe some of you cannot separate your dislike of the player on the field from the reason he was nominated and the showing of support last night in the dugout.

          • It has LESS to do with dislike of a player and MORE to do with dislike of performance and dislike of the circumstances. The guy had 3 chances to win the game and be the hero you people wish he was and he failed – AGAIN. As usual. I don’t care if he put on a cap in the dugout for 1 minute and jeopardized his organization being fined.

How about he spend more time being bold and brave when he’s at bat instead of in the dugout

            • Brave and swinging a bat should never be in the same sentence……I thought people would have learned that in the last 10 years.

              • dude i dont respond to you because you come up with the lamest comments regardless of which sides of the issues you stand.

                • Psst you just did respond

      • HE CHOKES BIG TIME, but is ok, he wore the cap to pay respect.. ok, is all forgiven, let’s give him a pass.. wow. some of you ppl just amaze me

        • Reyes had an error on Thursday, and two on Saturday and NOT ONE WORD……….

          More double standards………….

        • Who is giving him a ‘pass’, as you state – for not getting a hit with runners in scoring position?

I’ve read all comments on this thread and I’m not seeing that. Reading comprehension….

His charitable works do not make him an elite player. It makes him a good humanitarian. This should be the one thing all can agree on. Right?

  • I know it’s not really the place to post this, but the FA SP thinned just a bit, as Carpenter re-signed with the Cards for 2 year. I really hope that Alderson can flip Pelf for another SP, as I’m thinking if the FA gets too thin, we’ll be looking at the chances of Pelf being DFA’d become non-existent.

To tie it all together, I guess Wright is going to have to be man of the year in 2012 to help overcome the SP shortcomings of next year…

  • I do want to say that I perceived the headline here by Hojo as tongue-in-cheek. I’m mainly very disturbed at 1) the fact that he IS being nominated when there are more qualified candidates on the Mets and 2) Sean Kenny’s total JOKE and EMBARRASSMENT of a recap

    • Who on the Mets is more qualified based on the criteria of the award.

Feel free to volunteer YOUR time to do a recap. Easy to criticize when you can’t do it yourself.

      • R.A. Dickey has been at every charity event and front and center for two years about supporting the military, first responders and childrens causes.

        • That’s awesome, good job by R.A. Dickey

It’s funny though that people are actually arguing over this Man of the Year simply because it’s David Wrights name on it, without even finding out what its about.

          The blind hatred is embarrassing.

        • and even though he’s performance hasn’t been great, it has been better than wright in case we’re using performance on the field as well as humanitarian.. amazing… just wow,.

          • You are wrong………..

  • Mets.com has taken the Man of the Year story down!

    • I guess it should have been called “Man of the Minute” LOL

      • LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE CORE… SALUTES YOU BAYONNE..

  • Why are people getting all pissy about an award voted on by the players over, as far as I can tell, who did the best charity work?

What the hell is wrong with this organization and fanbase that we can’t even do stupid, fluffy things like that right?

    • Simple – it has the name David Wright on it, and there is a group of ignorant people that have different standards for different players. They remember every failure of his, yet have selective memory on the failings of their favorite player. They fail to realize there has never been a player in the history of the sport that has driven in 100% of the time or never made an error. However, when DW does it, they make it seem like it’s the 9th inning of the 7th game of the WS.

This is about charity, nothing else, but they have to get their panties in a bunch because it’s related to Wright…..

      Disgusting really………..

  • According to MLBPlayers.com the award is for the player that can “inspire others to higher levels of achievement by their on-field performances and contributions to their communities.”
    mlb.mlb.com/pa/releases/releases.jsp?content=091310

It seems all the nominees have “at least” 1 thing in common they all are on their current team active roster so that could have possibly prohibited Beltran from being nominated.

Most of the Met players I would guess are probably involved in a particular charity of their choice but in the end the player they nominated was Wright.

Past NY Met “Marvin Miller Man of the Year” nominees:
    2005: Tom Glavine
    2006: Carlos Delgado
    2007: Tom Glavine
    2008: Carlos Delgado
    2009: Carlos Delgado
    2010: David Wright

    • By the way don’t bother trying to vote cause Voting was scheduled to end “at 12 p.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 12″.

It is now 1:16pm voting has been closed for a good 75 minutes.

  • I would say if Wright-heads want to vote they still can because it won’t be 12 o’clock on the West Coast until 3PM EST. And for Mets fans in Hawaii, which is part of the USA and where the Mets once had a huge following because of Benny Agbayani. It’s not even 8am there and if I’m running a promotion and take ALL time zones into account.

Mets fans are not exclusive to the East Coast time zone. If i’m a Wrighthead and live in Nevada i would CERTAINLY hope I can still vote

    • wright-head?? lol.. you asking for trouble bayonne… there’s 2 people you cannot criticize or call out on this site.. david allen wright and sandy alderson.. and even if they failed, is not their fault, is omar minaya’s fault and stinson’s fault..
