Newly Acquired LHP Daniel Herrera Will Be With Team Tonight

Today’s Mets notes indicated that LHP Daniel Herrera will join the team tonight and will wear #19.

Herrera, 26, was acquired yesterday as one of the two players to be named later as part of the deal that sent Francisco Rodriguez to the Milwaukee Brewers on July 12.

The left-hander appeared in two games with the Brewers this season after he was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on May 23, 2011.

He was 1-4 with a 2.20 ERA (15 earned runs/61.1 innings), three saves and 54 strikeouts in 46 combined games this season between Louisville (AAA) of the International League and Nashville (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.

The 5-6, 165-pounder went 1-3 with a 3.91 ERA (10 earned runs/23.0 innings) in 36 games with the Reds in 2010. The Odessa, TX native appeared in 70 games as a rookie with the Reds in 2009, going 4-4 with a 3.06 ERA (21 earned runs/61.2 innings).

Herrera is 5-7 with a 3.94 ERA (41 earned runs/93.2 innings) in 115 major league games with the Reds and Brewers. He has allowed 110 hits, issued 34 walks and notched 66 strikeouts.

  • sigh……………………. can’t be any worst than byrdak or anything else we got on the bullpen.. so.. go ahead, let’s see what he brings to the table.

    • As you already noted there’s no harm in seeing if he can help. Lord knows we need it.

    • You just know there are people hoping against hope that this guy blows a game his first time out so they can rail and rant against the new FO.

      • isn’t that the same thing YOU DID about minaya?? AFTER all his moves and players failed, due to chokeness, unclutchness etc then you went after him hard right??
        ugh..

        • You don’t see a difference in pointing out where a guy failed after he’s gone and hoping the current guy fails?

        • I didn’t say a single word until almost 5 years into his run as Met GM. Not one single word in over 4 1/2 years.

In fact for a long time I was sure he was the right guy. A very long time. Immediately after the 2006 season I started to have concerns, never said a word. 2007, same thing. 2008, same again. 2009 I finally had it. In September.

Not 4 weeks into his job like some of you.

  • Danny Herrera is a great human interest story. He’s really someone the fans will love if he hangs around long enough. Here is one of his stories:
“I was at [Triple-A] Louisville. One of our catchers, [Alvin] Colina, who is a really big guy, picked me up and put me in his lap as he sat in the bullpen. Then he stuck his arm inside my jacket, and up my back. He wouldn’t let me go. I thought, ‘What is he doing?’ Then, whenever I would talk, he would move his lips. Everyone was cracking up. He was the ventriloquist, and I was [the] puppet. That was the best one.”

  • At least he’s a lefty. *shrug*

  • Awfully short for a pitcher, no? He must have one wicked pitch or two.

    • He’s a lefty, if you can throw strikes an somewhat of a consistent basis you can be a pitcher if your lefty.

    • He throws a screwball, nobody else in MLB throws it.

  • He’s 5’6″? 165lbs? That’s a typo, right?

    • LMAO! :-D I bet he gets a ton of ground balls, lol
