I agree. Stability has to start at the top. Alderson, Depodesto and now Terry Collins. These are the guys that are going to build the Mets into a world champion in the year 2013 when they beat the A’s in a long awaited rematch 40 years earlier.

If you read what I wrote I said he did a good job with the players.As far as managing a game,X’s and O’s he’s no different than Jerry Manuel.He said he would hold these guys accountable but made excuses when they made one mental mistake after another.Poor fundamentals all season lomg and no one was held accountable.I just don’t know why they couldn’t wait and see how 2012 plays out.I don’t believe in the “You can’t have a lame duck” theory.Why not? This is NY there will always be distractions.Lame duck status didn’t make a difference with Manuel.He was a bufoon when he had job security.

I just love Terry and the way he deals with his players. I’ve never seen a nicer relationship among players and Managers. That’s what Terry has done for the Mets and now he can keep on doing it – Congratulations Terry – you’re one of the best.

I agree with most of this article, but crediting him with hndling the Beltran tempest is a bit of a stretch. Where was the tempest? When Beltran was approached, he immediately replied that he would do whatever was best for the team. So Beltran never fought the move in any way. I have a lot of respect for Carlos for the team approch he displayed and feel very positive that he left the team with good rapport. Collins did much did this year in improving the state of the team, but Carlos was not one of his major challenges as he readily met Collins more than half way regarding the move to RF.

I think the message of stability is very important. He has done a very credible job in my opinion and extending him creates stability, which is something this franchise sorely needs.

You are being overly critical with this assessment. He has done a pretty sound job, has been very strong with encouragment and nurturing of players. There is no comparison to the poor performance of Jerry Manuel who was a doormat for poor player performance.

When there is zero job security in this biz, was he really going to be a lame duck? Lame ducks know they are getting canned or the boot. Terry would be managing for an extension, not just walking through the end of his contract knowing he would be non-renewed.

About the only logical reason I can think of is they just like the way he is implementing the organizational philosophy (how to play, player development, whatever) and wanted to send a message of stability.

But as others have noted, he is petty low paid for a manager, so if things don’t work out, not hard to cut a year early.

There is also a reasonable chance that he could be reassigned back into an organizational role instead by 2013, and quite possibly, this was already discussed with him as an option.

Or could be as simple as they think he is doing a good job!

and not too worried about losing any of the hot shot coaches. hale seems fine, but Teufel has never done much for me, and Backman had an OK year it seems, but is he really going to all of a sudden be a hot commodity?

first byrdak, now collins.. i think alderson is rushing into certain desicions.. but, he’s the GM not any of us. but i think he should’ve waited until at least half season next year

I also do not agree with extending Collins, or rather picking up his option year. I know some might point to all the injuries (Santana, Davis, Murphy, Wright, etc., etc.) but that’s garbage. A team that’s 6 games over .500 on the road but 13 under at home has nothing to do with injuries. You’ve got the same 25 guys at home or on the road. This team has been a doormat for opponents at Citifield this year, and that is unacceptable. I would have waited to see how 2012 goes before doing this. A knee jerk reaction by Alderson and company here. By doing this now you almost ensure some potential in house replacements leave for greener pastures (Backman, Hale, Teufel for instance) sooner rather than later. I don’t think Collins is worth letting talented coaches leave for other opportunities, frankly.

He’s never been an X’s & O’s kinda guy. I’m not a fan either of extending him now. To go with straight facts, he took a team to several games under .500 and he got an extension. Wish that worked for me around review time… Was Collins really worried about the Lame Duck factor? Or rather, were we, the blogger nutballs worried about it? Not really.

Then again, his salary really isn’t stopping the Mets from signing a FA or anything. Worst that can happen is he got himself a years paid vacation.

To me, could have waited until they we’re sitting 12 games over .500 in the middle of August, but whatever…

I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I’m not crazy about this.Why not wait and see how next year plays out before excercising his 2013 option.He’s done a good job not letting these guys quit and they held their own for most of the season with key injuries but as far as managing a baseball game,he’s not all that different from Jerry Manuel.I realize that bunting is a part of the game and serves its purpose but this guy needs to learn when you should bunt and who to bunt with.You don’t have to bunt every time you get a man on,especially a leadoff double in the late innings.Pulling starters too soon or waiting too long to yank a starter of even a reliever.His obsession with Parnell.When the rosters expanded he told the Sept call ups that they wouldn’t get much playing time because it was not fair to Willie Harris and Scott Hairston who have been with the team the whole year while the kids were not.You would think he would know that Harris and Hairston are journeyman major leaguers and that he should see if a kid like Satin can be a valuable piece of the future even if only as a bench player.The man was brought in because he stresses fundamentals and said this team will play the game the right way but what I saw was a team that made one mental mistake after another,god awful baserunning,failure to back up bases,failure to hit the cutoff man,failure to get a sac bunt down.mental lapses on the basepaths and on defense from day one Alderson did call him Terry the Taskmaster because he doesn’t tolerate fundamental mistakes. I understand he earned the right to manage in 2012 but I just can’t understand the rush to excercise that option.
