Game Preview: Reds vs Mets

The Mets and Reds play game two of this final series of the season as the Mets look to end their slide. To be honest though, the reason we are all watching at this point is mostly to see if Reyes can take the NL Batting title, as he just barely leads Braun. Capuano will get the start for the Mets tonight as he goes against Arroyo.

Capuano is 11-12 with a 4.55 ERA going into his final start of the season. In the month of September he is 1-1 over 4 starts with a 5.66 ERA. In his one start against the Reds this season, he pitched 5.1 innings allowing 6 ER. The Res have the following numbers against Chris:

Phillips 12-26, 3 2B, HR
Renteria 3-18
Stubbs 3-9, HR
Votto 3-9, 2B

The Mets batters will get a chance to look at Arroyo who is 9-12 with a 5.09 ERA. In the month of September, he has pitched 24.1 innings over 4 starts with a 4.81 ERA (he has had two incredible starts and two terrible starts). When he played against the Mets this year, he pitched 6.0 innings, allowed 7 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned. The Mets have the following numbers against Bronson:

Reyes 9-33, 4 2B, HR
Wright 7-31, HR
Harris 6-21
Paulino 6-17, 3 2B

  • Hmmmm…..Breaking News.

The judge in the clawback case has dismissed all but 2 counts against the Wilpons and Katz.

Can we please resign Reyes now?

Seriously, they must have seen this as a good chance of happening since the minority investor deal fell through at the 11th hour.

    • Yep,

Francesa just said now the Mets will have about 120 million dollar payroll and that’s what Alderson, Depo, & Ricciardi were asking for. Now they got it and many good GMs have won with that payroll so now here’s their chance.

Now let’s go get that pitching we’ve been talking about.

  • And more: Sandy has just announced on SNY that the Mets have just picked up the 2013 option on Terry Collins contract

    • Extending Collins is premature move so I don’t know why Alderson did it unless there’s some type of financial savings by doing it. With these guys you don’t know.

      • Clutch tastes like victory.

        • Yep, it tastes like Champagne as a matter of fact.

But those types of things don’t interest you guys especially when you need proof that non-visible things like clutch and carbon monoxide do exist.

          • When did I get saddled with this clutch doesn’t exist thing? I thought you outgrew making up lies. Guess not.

            Lies taste like victory.

In the interest of full disclosure, I don’t agree with it, either. I think clutch is immeasurable and doesn’t exist.

              • Where’d you dig that one up? I searched every post from the 16th back a week and couldn’t find that.

          • You are just a treasure trove of inanity and nonsense.

            • Inanity and nonsense tastes like victory.

              To paraphrase a great man:

Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that clutch existed. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.

what you need to do is find actual evidence clutch exists.

              • Ya, thanks. I know what I said. I don’t remember contradicting it.

                • If Clutch does exist it would have to be defined. What is it? BA with RISP in late and close games? I think we could all agree that that is the best definition or maybe you go with % of runners on driven in, in those situations or something else but it would have to be performance over and above what the player produces in ALL situations before you can label that player clutch.

In fact it would be pretty difficult to label someone clutch who hasn’t had 2 or 3 years worth of AB’s in whatever situation you decide to go with. All you could do there is say that someone has come through with some clutch hits early in his career but it would be premature to label the player clutch yet, excepting perhaps some monster clutch hits in the pennant race and post season over more than just one year.

So if clutch exists, tell us. Who’s clutch? Let’s get some examples going. Some guys who are currently active so we can continue to follow them and see if they keep it up. Guys who have had a few years and appear to be good examples of players who have displayed this character trait so far. First guesses, not second guesses.

Guys on other teams. Guy’s in the AL, NL across the spectrum of Major League baseball.

Whatever reasonable criteria anyone wants to select and a performance that is 10-15% better in those situations.

Doesn’t have to be a big hitter either. Give us a handful of guys who aren’t good hitters but raise their game in those situations and a handful of guys who are good hitters and do the same.

After all if the character trait exists, it should be easy to identify 10 guys bare minimum who posses it who are both in the Majors long enough to have a certain track record and young enough that they can be expected to get plenty of more opportunities.

You select the criteria and the threshold of performance above the norm.

Don’t just tell us who isn’t clutch, tell us who is, and most importantly who’s going to continue to be.

                  Any takers?

      • I’m going with that whole ‘lame duck’ manager mindset – sorta like Riggleman this year.

So the rumors go, Collins was brought in for 2 years during the ‘transition’. That probably would have become a real distraction about mid season next year.
