Doctors Confirm Ike Davis Will Avoid Surgery

Adam Rubin reports that doctors have confirmed that Ike Davis will avoid micro-fracture surgery on his ankle.

The plan is to continue resting and rehabbing the ankle throughout the offseason so that he will be ready to go come Spring Training.

Mets first baseman Ike Davis told reporters on Monday, that he will avoid microfracture surgery to repair a bone bruise in his left ankle, which has kept him sidelined since May. Davis said that after resting for much of August, he has ramped up his workout regimen with no ill effects.

“Right now, all we can do is try to do the best thing for my career,” he said. “The best thing is not to have surgery right now. If it stays like this, I won’t have to. The last two weeks, I’ve been really pushing it, and it’s stayed pretty consistent. It hasn’t gotten worse, like in the past.”

Though he still has some pain, Davis is confident that team doctors will be clear him after he meets with them this week in New York.

“It’s not 100 percent, but it’s at the point right now where I’m moving around pretty well and can do basically about everything, so, still a little tight and some things in there that maybe in more time, it might heal. Right now, the reason we’re not going to have surgery is because I don’t think it’s going to be beneficial. Obviously it’s not ruled out, but as of right now, it looks pretty good.”

This was a crucial decision for Davis who must now avoid any setbacks. It has already been projected that it would take six months of recovery and rehab if he were to have the surgery, so any setback that would lead to surgery could jeep him from beginning the 2012 season on time.

  • this is good news to me. after seeing the outcome from other athletes that had this (usually on the knee, so no idea how it translates to the ankle), MF surgery scared me.

it sounds like he is saying he could play with it now if he had to, and if that is the case, then rest/rehab for another 6 months should certainly help out.

having Ike come back strong next season will be a huge boost to the team.

  • man, an ankle injury sideline ike for the WHOLE YEAR.. man.. this team got some weird mojo around them, the injuries are just absurb and in some terms, insane.. ugh.. is a shame that for the past 3 years the whole team wasnt together as created.. imagine 2009 with a healthy putz, beltran, reyes and delgado?? and them having their usual avg years?? we can only sit back and dream of what would’ve been..

    • I know this is a bit of a stretch, but imagine a healthy Moises Alou ripping line drives at a .350 clip back in 07-08.

      • Imagine not relying on guys in their 30s and/or with well known health problems and no real back up.

        • Imagine being a Met fan and not crying about past failures and actually having a bright future. Need a strong imagination for that.

          • Imagine David Wright now ….Hitting through and though
and a boy named Jason….He really used to hit too
Imagine Johan throwin and being unhittable…..wooooo whooooooo whooooo
Imagine no more Wilpons….Anyone else would do
            We just resigned Reyes
            We got some pitchers too!
            ……………..keep it going

        • like they did this year with cap and young.

          • Mets paid 2.6M for those two. Those are low risk good upside moves. Alou got 15M for 2 years.

  • It took them 4 months to decide whether or not to have surgery to repair a bone bruise on his ankle. So glad that with all of the Mets changes they have made to the team in the past year, they have decided to make no changes to their training/medical staff. Ray Ramirez must be blowing a lot of high ranking personnel and doing great at it…the only thing he does great for the Mets. Unbelievable.

    • how about, they all considered micro fracture surgery risky and potentially career ending, so they wanted to avoid it if at all possible, so they gave him time to heal without it?

with the MF, he was done for the season anyway, so no big deal waiting.

    • Imagine being a Mets fan and not having a clue. Are you a doctor, I love people like you that pontificate about injuries and blame training/medical staff for it.

Nice comment about Ray Ramirez – real classy.

Aren’t you the same person that just said this?

“Imagine being a Met fan and not crying about past failures and actually having a bright future. Need a strong imagination for that.”

Where did you get your medical degree?

  • “The best thing is not to have surgery right now. If it stays like this, I won’t have to. The last two weeks, I’ve been really pushing it, and it’s stayed pretty consistent. It hasn’t gotten worse, like in the past.”

Anyone else other than me reading something differnt into what Ike Davis is saying?
I hear, “Don’t be surprised if I am on the disabled list come opening day still rehabbing as.”

    • I was thinking the same thing. With our luck, come spring training and guess what— Surgery caused by bumping into each other.

  • I’d need to examine with you here. Which is not something I often do! I enjoy studying a publish that can make individuals think. Also, thanks for permitting me to comment!
