You said it Joe. Mike Francessa is not only an ass, but he is pompous as well. He thinks he is too good for NBC now. Probably because the food they supplied him on his little table on Mike'd up was no longer appealing to him. Congrats to the Mets who finally have a batting champion which I think is the ultimate reward to the many Mets who played their hearts out this season against all odds going into the season. Mike Francessa ought to be sticking with the Yankees for now until they get eliminated by the Tigers in 4 games in the ALDS.

Many of the so called sports media was comparing him to Ted Williams playing a DH when he was at .399 and then going 5 for 8 or something and finishing at .406.
So what different time, different player; Williams is a HOF, right now Jose is a good, maybe AS type player but why does it seem when a player not as visible as Braun does this it is criticized especially a Met player?

I think people are over thinking this. Reyes is definitely not the first player to sit out part of or a full game to win the batting title. Wade Boggs anyone? He sat out FOUR FULL GAMES! Reyes has done so much for this team. Let him sit out a few innings of a meaningless game to get a batting title. It didn't hurt anyone. I can understand why the people at the ballpark would be upset, but come on. Give the man a break.

By the way, congrats to Jose. He had a great season.

Reyes even came back last year when he couldn't even hit from the left side and played hurt and the other injuries he sustained cannot be played on.

In fact he's a guy who never gets even an inning off. Never begs out of a game, never comes out of a game, nothing.

I really can't blame him one bit. He may never have a chance to win a batting title and the precedent for doing what he did has been set so many times before it's not even funny.

And even the Ted Williams thing is no analogy. Williams was NOT hitting .400 before the double header. He then struck out in his first AB, so now he's down two hits. Got 'em both and got to .400 with another AB and a whole game to go. Got another hit and went into the last game with a 1 hit cushion. Had his first AB in the 2nd game been an out he easily could have been taken out but it wasn't. He got another hit and kept playing. Besides it's SEVENTY YEARS AGO. Things change. Many other guys before Reyes and even before Williams did the same damn thing. It's a cumulative season long accomplishment and personally I'm happy as hell it was accomplished by a NY Met.

I really think it's just because no one can ever cut anyone some slack. There always has to be some manufactured controversy or some **** even when there's a chance for Met Fans to actually have something to enjoy.

As far as I'm concerned Jose has built up a lot of good will since he came to NY and I'm happy for him. Glad he got it. Hope he comes back.

just tell him to STFU and then case closed... he's the batting champion, ppl here didn't want HIM to be the first met to ever did it because they wanted their boy david to do it but he fell short to bat even ahead of brian schenider this year, so since is reyes they looked for any excuse to try to spin something negative around it..
no matter what, when asked, who's the first met to EVER WIN A BATTING TITLE, the answer would still be JOSE REYES!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT HERE...

Even if Jose played the remainder of the final game and went 0 for 5, he still would have finished the season with the batting title. He came out of the game because the title was in the bag and he was probably told this.

Jose finished the season with 181 hits out of 537 AB's. If you take away the one bunt for a hit that everyone is crying about, and assume he finished the final game going 0 for 5, his end of the season stats would be 180 hits in 541 AB's giving him a batting average of 332.7. Ryan Braun finished the season with 187 hits in 563 AB's giving him an end of the season batting average of 332.15, which is still less than Jose's average.

Now if Braun went 4 for 4 in the final game, he could have beat Jose with a batting average of 339.3, but he didn't he went 0 for 4. Once Jose came out of the game, Braun still had a shot at winning the title but fell short.

Why didn't he? SIMPLE!

If he tears that hurt hammy in that game he losses roughly 3-5 Million per year on his next contract!
He had FAR more to lose than Braun did when he sat out!

Well because it doesn't fit with their MONEYBALL philosophy if they note Reyes' success and show goodness to resign him because he won't cost us only a $1.99!

OBP is only desirable if it doesn't cost much...
They are more obsessed with cost than performance if they were not they wouldn't put so much stock in OBP and look at the BA, RBI and RS numbers like most people looking for good players do!

Cause if a player has a .337 BA it is nearly impossible for him to have an OBP lower than that! But a guy with a .353 OBP can easily hit .253

Well I will point out that I was surprised he started the game at all.
Since Reyes tweaked his hammy the last time the usual routine was to sit him in a day game after a night game.

And there was a hell of lot more reason for coming out than anything to do with the batting title.

The guy is going to be a FA. people give braun a pass because he is going to the playoffs but why don't they consider the loss to Reyes if he plays the whole game and tears that screaming hammy?

How much is he going to get in Free Agency if that happens?
He has played hurt since August when he could have shut it down with a far greater lead than he has now. No way braun was going to catch him when he was in the .340's!

I can understand people going to see him being dissapointed as he is one of the few reasons to go to CitiField these days.
But that only underscores the need to try and resign him so that goodbye they wanted to give him is not needed.

Reyes had FAR MORE to lose personally by playing that entire game than Braun would stand to lose by missing a playoff!
3-5 Mil a year for 5 years if he tore that hammy in a meaningless game!

They would not have got to see the hit that won Reyes the batting chamionship either way because that hit came the night before!

So I don't see what everyones problem is here. It's a business decision just as resigning Reyes will be at the end of the day and I for one can't blame a guy for saying I did enough this season let Braun try and beat me if he can and I'll just be sure I don't screw up my big payday right now and try and win another batting championship next year that everyone can go and see!

Since Reyes tweaked his hammy the last time the usual routine was to sit him in a day game after a night game.

And there was a hell of lot more reason for coming out than anything to do with the batting title.

The guy is going to be a FA. people give braun a pass because he is going to the playoffs but why don’t they consider the loss to Reyes if he plays the whole game and tears that screaming hammy?

How much is he going to get in Free Agency if that happens?
He has played hurt since August when he could have shut it down with a far greater lead than he has now. No way braun was going to catch him when he was in the .340′s!

So I don’t see what everyones problem is here. It’s a business decision just as resigning Reyes will be at the end of the day and I for one can’t blame a guy for saying I did enough this season let Braun try and beat me if he can and I’ll just be sure I don’t screw up my big payday right now and try and win another batting championship next year that everyone can go and see!

It's like if a guy bunts on a Mets pitcher in the 9th going for a no hitter, we'd all be mad right?

But if Reyes bunts in the 9th versus a Halladay no hitter, we'd all stand and defend it.

I'm not saying I'm not happy he won a batting title, I think he would have won it no matter what but not only did he take himself out but he bunted for the hit. It could have been his final game as a Met and he took himself out for a personal award.

Why that doesn't "bother" more people is beyond me. If yesterday was Reyes' final game as a Met, I'll remember how he took himself out in the 1st inning in front of a home crowd... not winning a batting title with a bunt.

Derek Jeter would never win a batting title in such an underhanded way. This seems a little unfalsifiable, since Jeter has never won a batting title at all. But there are smaller selfish milestones in baseball, too. Such as the one that faced Derek Jeter on Sept. 26, 2008. There were three games left in the season, and for once, the Yankees weren't going to the playoffs. Jeter's hand was sore from being hit by a ball the week before. His batting average, which had mostly ranged from the .270s to the low .300s through the year, had finished an upswing and started dropping again, down to .301. There was nothing left to play for but pride and dignity and respect for the game itself.

So what did Jeter, the embodiment of everything that's right with baseball, do? He started the game 0-for-2 and saw his average drop to .300—one at-bat away from .2998. At that point, in the third inning, he left the game, never to reappear for the rest of the season. He chickened out, just like Jose Reyes. As would—and as have—legions of other players who've had a batting number on the line in an otherwise unimportant game, besides Ted Williams. Still, it's true Reyes is no Jeter. Reyes got the hit before he quit.

If Ryan Braun was in the same exact position as Jose Reyes, several people who claim to be old school baseball fans would be all over Braun for the bush league move of taking himself out. You know you would. Do not deny it.

The same people who despise new school thinking including sabermetrics are the same people who should despise an individual player putting individual awards over the team and the fans... yet ironically because its our guy, they put personal feelings aside?

If Reyes goes elsewhere because of greed, we'll look back at the day Reyes won a batting title as the day he chose to not even play a full game in his final day as a Met.

But Braun DID do the same thing as Reyes - It's unbelievable how you are making exucses for Braun, and your killing Reyes for doing the same thing.

Fact: In the last series of the year, Ryan Braun didn't start when he was leading Jose Reyes....and came back in once Reyes passed him, and then played in the last two games when Reyes was leading.

Why aren't you upset about that?
