Buzz On Citi Field Changes and 2012 Payroll

According to Mike Francesa of WFAN, the following changes will be made to Citi Field in time for the 2012 season:

  1. The fences in the outfield will be 8 feet tall from left field to right field.
  2. The foul poles will remain exactly where they are.
  3. The wall in left-center and center will be brought in with dead center around 390 feet.
  4. The Mo Zone will also be brought in.

Francesa, who is broadcasting from Citi Field, also says that he has heard that the Mets payroll will be between $80 to $110 million next season.

“The more Mets people I talk to the more I hear the payroll will be less than $100 million.”

There you go…

Funny observation – Francesa is on YES Network and they blacked out everything that had Mets logos and it looks like he’s in a black room. Even the Pepsi logo on his drink cup has been blacked out.

  • Sounds like good changes to the field. Nothing radical, and should certainly keep it toward the pitching side of nuetral, so basically “fair”, and probably playing similarly to Shea.

And fantastic that Francessa is reporting this, since it almost guarantees it is wrong!

payroll doesn’t matter. talent does. taking 100 mill to 120 mill (just to say you did) by signing a couple guys like Ollie seems counterproductive to me.

But, spending that extra 20 on high end guys (Reyes, Wilson)? that’s the ticket!

  • also, it is probably almost impossible to get much below 100, and certainly close to 80 (talk about making crap up). Unless you think they can trade Bay and his full salary, and that they are going to move Wright also (and of course let Reyes go)

    • Given what Bay, Wright and Santana all make, less than $100 million would mean fielding 8 guys every game.

  • Rich Coutinoh saying his sources tell him payroll will be between $105 and $120 million.

  • i think they may be able to compete for reyes. i guess it depends on who else is bidding.

i don’t think the yanks would move jeter, or replace him with someone who could overshadow him. i think they’ll stick with jeter for a year, and hope that nunez doesn’t disappoint.

the red sox are a possibility, and have a hole at short, but I think they’re going to cool it on the big contracts after crawford.

the phillies are also a maybe, but I think they’re tapped and feel that they can get another year or two from j-roll

the angels are set. so are the cubs.

miami is interesting, if they decide to move hanley to the outfield.

my point is that although reyes had a great year, the demand isn’t there from the usual big spenders, so the mets have a shot.

if i missed something, let me know.

the mets need SP’s and sadly there are no good ones available.

    • You overlooked Washington and San Francisco. He will likely end up in one of those two cities if the Mets don’t re-sign him.

  • All I can say is: it’s going to b e a looooooong off season!

  • So the 415 is staying the same?

  • I have hated the dimensions at citicavern since day one.All kinds of rumors will be flying around for the next few days till the official changes are announced.I have an idea that might help and would cost the cheapskate Wilpons very little money.Leave all the fences exactly the same but put holes in the high fences and openings in the low fences.Anything that goes thru a hole on the fly or rolls under the fence is a home run. After watching Jason Bay impersonate a ballplayer for 2 years, i’m convinced that’s how he hit all those home runs in Fenway a few years ago and nobody knew about it .
