At this point what do they have to lose by having John Franco work with Bobby Parnell? Being a closer is all about attitude. Parnell has been around a few years and yes he has been given the chance to succeed but it has been in a few different roles depending on the needs of the team. Parnell has the equipment physically for sure but the question is can he become the closer that we need so badly? John Franco had nearly 400 saves and knows what it takes!

I can see why Mets fans hate Parnell but I think a lot of the anger and abandonment of players by fans is overreaction. The Mets have fallen apart the last few years and fans are mad! They now want instant solutions when there aren’t any. Parnell has a good fastball but he needs some help. If Franco can help him then I am sure the angered fans will love him. A lot of fans are just giving up on anyone who can’t give them results now. We had to deal with Oliver Perez and now everyone is scared that anyone not playing well is going to be the next Perez. He is a cheap player though and a lot of people forget that. Its not like Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo or Jason Bay. Those guys sucked and were paid a ridiculous amount to suck. Parnell has been crappy but he is cheap, young and could turn out good. If he doesn’t then its not a big loss but the Mets aren’t going to give up yet because if they let him go he could be the next big closer for some other team and the fans would never let ownership live that down.

we don’t have a closer type pitcher in our organization,no one on this team is porperly siuted for that role.hell our bp just sucks.so we get to replace sucky with sucky not much choice or upside.

The Mets are desperate. What they are saying with the Parnell experiment is “we have no money or trade possibilities in the off season to get a closer.” Read between the lines, they are shooting craps and praying for a jackpot. This is there plan.

If you think Parnell getting shoved down our throats is a joke, or Pelfrey being pegged as a legit #1 or #2 starter, Wright being portrayed as a “team leader” is the biggest joke of all.

Stop me if you heard this before. “Pelfrey will be the Mets ace” has it happen?
If the Mets can turn Parnell into another player that works for us now, I say do it. You can’t continue to wait for guys to develop forever.

I not like Parnell has not been given a chance which was the case with Heath Bell. He has had many chances and failed them all. How long do you wait for his off-speed pitches? is what 2+ years and still waiting?

I would trade him and the HandLicker for some prospects with some gravitas any day of the week. Who cares if Parnell turns into a good middle reliever or if Pelfrey becames a good #4. There are plenty of both.

You are absolutely right. I have ofter said the same thing as to why the Mets keep trying to make him what he is clearly not; a closer.

Manny Acosta can be and has better stuff than Parnell. He also seems to have the fire that a closer needs to have. Bucholz is worth taking a look as well as Beato.

The one thing that should be certain is that Parnell is NOT IT.

I wouldn’t say the Mets are shoving him down our throats, but I will say that he’s the best in a bunch of bad options for closer on this team. Parnell is no kid, he’s 27, and all the tutoring in the world from John Franco isn’t going to transform him from Winnie the Pooh to Attila the Hun on the mound. You can teach a new pitch to someone, but how do you teach mound presence or intimidation? You either have those qualities or you don’t.

The Mets need a closer and they may also need a setup man. I don’t see Parnell, who is not a kid at 27, suddenly becoming either of those things simply because we blink our eyes and wave our wands. He is what he is. A former starter turned reliever who can help you in low pressure situations and give you 40-60 innings a year out of the bullpen.

again, i do not hate david, but is amazing how as soon as someone say something bad about him is like a riot, he has some many defenders and had gotten so many passes by the media and fans throughout the years it wasn’t even funny, yes agree about everything you said about that game, main reason for me to not want perez on the team anymore was that particular game where with the mets leading 5-1 he allwed the cubs to tie the game by the 4th inning, but again, the guy had a GOLDEN OPP, not only was murphy at 3rd with NO OUTS, but he had a 3-0 COUNT!!!! then struck out on a pitch 6 FEET OFF THE PLATE, now it happens, noone is perfect, we lost the game and it was frustrated to watch, but then, My dislike for him started after he said on the post game conference :”HE MADE A GREAT 3-2 PITCH” i was like WHAT?!??!???

your point is well take 86, but there have been a ton of guys who have thrown hard and never came around to succeed. I wouldn’t go as far as to say Farnsworth is a premier closer. He is having a really good year, and has sprinkled in a few good ones over his career, but has mostly been inconstant.

Health Bell is a rare case of a guy who figures it out later in his career. He is is 35 years old now, and and really didn’t figure things out until about 5 years ago. Are you willing to wait a few more years on Parnell to see if he will ever figure it out? I understand we don’t have any real options so why not just pitch him, that’s fine. But after this season enough is enough.

He is a middle of the bullpen arm potentially an 8th inning guy, not a closer

I have said this before and it bears repeating: HEATH BELL. He also was a young hard throwing RH coming up through the Mets system. He spent 3 years in NY with a 4.92 ERA, 129 Hits in 108 IP and 14 HR allowed. The Mets gave up on him before he figured it out and, well, the rest is history. Yes, Parnell is inconsistent. Yes, he doesn’t always know where the ball’s going to end up. But neither did Kyle Farnsworth early in his career and now he’s a premier closer for the Rays. The Mets are out of contention, what are they hurting by giving Parnell a chance? Nothing. And besides, is there a better option? Acosta!? Beato? I think not.

yeah, but i think they’re as fed off as the fans. bullpen he sucks, then move him as a starter, the he sucks, send him down, he still sucks, brought him up, does ok in the 7th inning, then becomes 8th inning guy, sucks, become closer and he became EVEN WORST!!!
the mets are not getting anything good for him if on the trade block.. if he becomes good ok, good for him, is obvious here he won’t

I hear what you guys are saying, but at this point it’s been a few years now and we are still seeing the same inconsistent Parnell we have always seen. He’s got a great fastball but it is very straight and very hittable when it is the only pitch he can consistently get over for strikes.

At this point we might as well look at guys like Beato and Acosta because the Parnell experiment is not working.

on another note, here’s what our leader said yesterday after learning the mets were “eliminated” from playoffs contention:
“You would have thought that with the resources that we have, the players that we’ve had, that we would have had an opportunity to go to the playoffs more than once. That hasn’t happened, and obviously that’s disappointing. … I never would have thought we’d be in the position that we’re in, especially after that short burst of success that we had. Each year you don’t go to the playoffs it’s a failed opportunity, and it’s one year that you lose as far as getting there and having a chance to win the World Series.”

well david, in my response to that is, had you showed up for the NLCS in 2006, drive murphy in from 3rd base with no outs in the 9th inning of a tied game who knows if by now you would’ve had a ring

I’m with the Mets on this one. If they traded Parnell and he happened to turn into a successful reliever elsewhere and knowing the Mets luck that’s not that crazy to think of people here would be killing the Mets.

They’re trying every option they can think of to see if they can get something out of this kid before giving up on him and I don’t blame them

Shoving down our throats? That also seems a tad sensationalistic.

they have limited options on hand right now, and he has an interesting too (the FB). And the team is doing full due dillegence to see if he could be a legit end of game RP. Better to exhaust all options with him before stamping “trash” on his forehead and throwing him away.

I suspect that back in the day Heath Bell was labelled the same things as Parnell, he he managed to get “fixed” OK!

Parnell most likely will not be the closer next year, but it won’t be Izzy either. So unless you think they should be giving Beato the long look (or Acosta, or someone else floating around), might as well prove he can’t adapt to the job.
