Updated Mets Top 10 Prospects by Baseball America

Mets Have Yet To Sign Brandon Nimmo

Jim Callis of Baseball America updated the Mets Top 10 Prospects yesterday to account for some new organizational additions via the First Year Player Draft and the recent trade for Zack Wheeler who is now the Mets #1 Prospect. Here is the rest of them.

1. Zach Wheeler, RHP – A+ Port St. Lucie

2. Matt Harvey, RHP – AA Binghamton

3. Brandon Nimmo, OF – Still Unsigned

4. Jeurys Familia, RHP – AA Binghamton

5. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF – AAA Buffalo*

6. Jenrry Mejia, RHP – AAA Buffalo*

7. Cesar Puello, OF – A+ Port St. Lucie

8. Michael Fulmer, RHP - Not Yet Assigned

9. Jordany Valdespin, 2B – AA Binghamton

10. Wilmer Flores, SS – A+ Port St. Lucie

* Out for the season.

Callis said he chose Wheeler over Harvey based purely on upside and not their performance. He dropped Flores from #2 to #10 because scouts are no longer impressed with his bat and nobody sees him as a major league shortstop or third baseman.

The Mets are not close to signing their top pick this year, Brandon Nimmo, who is seeking a $2.5 million contract. The Mets have until August 15th, less than two weeks, to sign him or lose him.

As for the list, the only two Triple-A prospects who were close to being major league ready, are now out for the year after season ending surgeries. That leaves most on this list still years away.

It’s amazing how so many players have appeared on this list and even at #1, and now have fallen off completely. Names like Brad Holt, Alderin Rodriguez and of course Fernando Martinez have all lost their shine.

  • I thought Fulmer was signed?

    • He was, he just hasn’t been given an assignment yet.

    • I don’t understand how Nieuwenhuis became a better prospect than Mejia since the last BA list came out. And I totally disagree that Valdespin is a better prospect than Wilmer Flores. Flores, at 19, is putting up good numbers playing everyday in a league where the other players are three to four years older than him. Spin can hit, but he’s immature (been suspended repeatedly in past seasons for not listening to his coaches) and a putrid fielder.

  • There is a wide variety of players,2 in AAA 3 in AA 3in high A, and 2 not on a team yet. This list doesnt include players in Buffalo that will be helping out the Mets next year. Tejada Schwinden and Martinez will be bench or bullpen. If the minor leagues can produce some starters in the majors that is what is needed, enough with the bench players Evans.

  • Nothin for nothin, but these like dislike icons are really stupid, and should be sent the way of the St Louis Browns.

  • WTF! I didn’t see my name on that list! I hit 2 doubles this past weekend…

  • ummm. so, nimmo is better that any other prospect we have based on what?? even vaughn??
also, wheeler #1?? based on what!!!??? who runs baseball america? sandy alderson?? harvaye DOMINATED and wheeler has yet to, only thing he’s known for is striking out everyone while walking the park as well, but wait, he’s raw and got upside, ugh..
funny how 3 of the players from alderson’s draft and trade are AUTOMATICALLY top 10 of mets prospects, shady if ask me.. let the kids at least develop and play in double A before crowning them the best in the farms, ahead of familia, mejia and harvey will be ready by next year, latest 2013 and wheeler will be here 2014
    go figure
