The Mets 40-Man Roster And Some Potential September Call-ups

With September 1st only two weeks away, Adam Rubin speculated on which Mets minor leaguers could get called up when rosters expand to 40 players.

Here’s what he had to say about a few of them:

CHRIS SCHWINDEN, rhp (7-6, 3.53 ERA in 23 appearances, 21 starts, with Buffalo and Binghamton): The Dillon Gee-type feel-good story of the current crop of prospects, Schwinden came out of nowhere. A 22nd-round pick in 2008 from Fresno Pacific, even Schwinden has been pleasantly surprised by his success. “I didn’t think I was going to do as good as I am now. It’s kind of shocking. It’s turned out for the best so far,” Schwinden said earlier this season.

JOSH STINSON, rhp (5-9, 6.36 ERA in 33 appearances, 15 starts, with Buffalo and Binghamton): Stinson had success at Triple-A Buffalo after a promotion late last season, going 2-2 with a 2.57 ERA in four starts. He stumbled this season in the International League as a starter, posting a 7.44 ERA in 13 starts. He then was reassigned to Double-A Binghamton, where he was assigned to the bullpen — the role the Mets project for the Shreveport, La., native in the majors.

ROBERT CARSON, lhp (3-11, 4.85 in 21 starts with Binghamton): The most unexpected choice assuming he is in fact promoted, Carson likely would help as a southpaw in the bullpen. He threw 94-95 mph during his last outing with the B-Mets, but tended to be up in the strike zone, where more discerning major league hitters could give him problems. Left-handers are hitting .295 and right-handers .304 against Carson this season. Carson is a 14-round pick in 2007 out of high school in Hattiesburg, Miss.

JOSH SATIN, infielder (.324, 12 HR, 71 RBI, .415 OBP, 417 at-bats with Buffalo and Binghamton): After hitting .325 in Double-A, Satin earned a July 22 promotion to the Bisons and continued his offensive success. A sixth-round pick in 2008 from Cal-Berkeley, Satin recently enjoyed a 15-game hitting streak. Perhaps a notch below Daniel Murphy in terms of defensive skill, Satin similarly has been exposed to first, second and third base.

ZACH LUTZ, third baseman (.301, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 156 at-bats with Buffalo): A solid hitter whose father Yogi coached him at Alvernia College before Lutz was drafted in the fifth round in 2007, injuries have been Lutz’s biggest obstacle. Early in his pro career, Lutz dealt with stress fractures in his feet, which required surgery. This year, he originally landed on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain. And while on the DL, he was struck with a foul ball in the dugout, breaking the ring finger on his non-throwing hand. Lutz also has suffered a pair of concussions this season — both the result of being hit in the head with pitches. Lutz, not a gifted fielder, also has been exposed to first base during his minor league career.

Rubin also mentions catcher Mike Nickeas who we’ve already seen earlier this month, and of course outfielder Fernando Martinez whose September call-up has become sort of tradition (when he happens to be healthy).

Looking at the current 40-man roster, the Mets will certainly have to make some room for a few of these players, as Schwinden, Stinson, Carson and Satin can’t be called up unless the Mets make room for them.

One player that Rubin didn’t mention and is already is on the 40MR is infielder Jordany Valdespin who is having a solid season and I expect will be among those who get the call.

Players who can get chopped to make room for the new reinforcements include Dale Thayer or Mike O’Connor, plus they could just cut Ryota Igarashi, or trade Chris Capuano who just cleared waivers and could be traded to any team. The Mets could also place Ike Davis on the 60-day disabled list to clear up a spot.

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about seeing some of these kids come up and get some playing time. The two players who interest me most are Josh Satin and Chris Schwinden.

SCXHWINDEN APPEARAS, AT BEST TO BE A STANDIN QUALITY BEDORE ANY OF THE REAL FUTURE ARRIVES, SORT OD F A PAN B EMPLOYED BEFORE PLAN A FULLY FERMENTS

I FULLY ANTICIPATE NEXT SEASON TO BE MORE OF THIS SEASON, ONLY WITH DAVIS,WRIGHT,REYES FOR LONGER HAILS AS I’M PRESUMING SANTANA’S CONTRIBUTION LEVELS WILL RESEMBLE THAT OF PEDRO IN ’07,’08, SORT OF A TEASE BEFORE THE MISERY WITH MULTYIPLE SHORT OUTINGS WITH LONG INNINGS .
BTW, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN DEFINED BY OTHERS AS A COCKEYED OPTIMIST, MY ENTIRE LIFE.

    • Agree completely ’62. Basically whatever Minaya provided is what we’ll use and then fill in around with guys that won’t clog up the roster and choke the payroll and could be valuable at the trade deadline to infuse the system with some much needed high ceiling talent to add to what Minaya provided.

It’s really the only way forward at this point. Spending #1 or #2 round draft choices will just set us back. We need those picks to pay off for us big time, for a long time. Maybe this year we could add a better candidate than a Young or Capuano and address the bullpen in a truly meaningful way.

That and resigning Reyes are the most important issues. Davis and Santana’s health are out of our hands and I really wonder if Davis injury is ever going to heal. Surgery isn’t guaranteed to solve the problem either and being off his feet for 9 months can’t be doing his career any good. Santana could easily have a second year of starts and stops with his rehab. Wang did after undergoing the exact same procedure.

Pagan and Pelfrey will probably be here for their walk seasons and with any good fortune we’ll be torn between getting draft pick(s) or entertaining a couple of interesting deadline proposals. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they both wind up as type B FA’s.

Tejada and Valdespin platoon at 2B and back up SS. Murphy backs up everywhere else. Duda performs OK-good in RF and at bat. Bay doesn’t suck. Mejia and Kirk come back from their surgeries early enough to re establish themselves in AAA. Familia has a strong season in AAA and 4 great starts in September. Harvey dominates AA, Wheeler A+ and a mid season bump to Binghamton. Lagares forces us to cut Bay loose for 2013, McHugh, Cohoon, Cruz, De La Torre, Edgan, Leathersuch give us bullpen options galore, Gorski, Puello, Vaughn, Den Dekker, Fulmer, Mazzoni, Tapia, Urbina, Morris roll We finally get a Major League capable catcher the pitching staff can actually pitch too.

Those are the things I’m looking forward to. That and seeing Nimmo. Now go get him signed boys, a couple hundred G’s isn’t going to kill you.

      • Can you go a single day without trashing Omar? Or is it an obsession?

Funny you trash any guy he had anything to do with but totally ignore all the guys he hit on which is actually MORE than what the Phillies hit on in the last 10 years if you don’t count the multiplayer trades for an aging pitching staff

    • That cockeye would explain the horrible spelling mistakes and not realizing you had CAPS lock on. Seeing what the kids can do is always some salvation of disappointing seasons.

      • ’62, as the senior man here, relies on the cap locks because he no longer sees the ball as clearly as he once did. We don’t mind that here because we prefer substance over style anyway.

        • Just an FYI: As a fan since ’68, I’m probably not too far behind 62 fan.
And I have to tell you, I normally skip over those posts b/c these old eyes have a very hard time trying to read those all CAPS responses.

T, FACT IS RESPONDING TO YOUR POINT ABOUT THE PROMINANCE OF SINGULARLY DIMENSIONED DRAFT SELERCTIONS SPECIALIZING IN 1B COVERAGE I WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT, MORE & MORE OF LATE, I’M HEARING OPPOSING CALLUPS DESCRIBED SIMILARLY AS “BATS WITHOUT OBVIOUS POSITIONS” SEEMS TO BE A PLAGUE CAUSED BY YRS OF DEFENSIVE NEGLECT BY THE MEDIA TYPES.

I’M HOPING MANY READ THIS & REFLECT ON THEIR PURPOSE FOR VISITING IN THE FIRST PLACE.

          • Well said as usual ’62. I had read a similar account of your reasoning for the caps lock from you before but didn’t feel the need to share that. In any event it is great to hear from you regardless of what size quill you write with.

Interesting point about many other teams having the same situation. I really wasn’t thinking of it that way but perhaps your correct. To some extent positions have always had to be found for good hitters but is it more epedemic now? I don’t know. I tend to look at our competition. Heyward’s a RFer, Freemans a 1B, Zimmerman a 3B, Espinosa 2B, Ramos/Norris/Flores catchers, McCann the same. Stanton WAS a 1B in the draft never even once played an inning there in the minors. Harper was a catcher before the draft an never played an inning their again. RF only. Prado’s moved around a bit but not until after he established himself in the League and he’s certainly capable of playing 2B, 3B or LF from a talent standpoint.

The Phillies had Jim Thome playing 1B and a hole in RF but they didn’t put Ryan Howard out there. Logan Morrison did play 1B almost exclusively in the minors but he didn’t shift back and forth as Murphy, Duda and Evans have. Course the Marlins didn’t have a 1B go down either.

Dominick Brown played 3 times as much RF as CF and hardly any LF in the minors. Utley played a little 3B but mostly 2B. Reyes, Wright and Davis almost never played anywhere other than the positions we know them at in the minors.

I think it’s more about trying to pigeonhole guys into a position where they can do the least harm at due to a lack of altheticism but still allow their bat to play.

In other words trying to make up for drafting for slot selection first and trying to make it work with less talented or athletic players.

That’s how we wind up with so many 1B/LF types.

Still and all you may be right to some extent. Maybe defense was deempahsized during the steroid era and filtered down through the minors, college, HS, Legion, LL’s ect. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Well at least we got the younger part right but we still have some work to do on the athletic part.

    • 62, while I usually agree with you, I must disagre with you on Schwinden and would ask you to defer judgement until we get a chance to see him. By all accounts he seems to be the classic late bloomer and he had dominated the leaderboards in a very pitching heavy International League. Let’s see what he’s got. I’m hoping he get a fair ahot and I’m excited to get a look at him myself.

      • OMF, I’M RELATIVELY CERTAIN SCHWINDEN WILL GET AMPLE OPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE BRIDGE BUILDERS(THOSE ROTATION MEMBERS BRIDGING THE CHASM OF 2Y STILL NEEDED TO FULLY FERMENT THE BEST OF OUR FUTURE aka HARVEY,FAMILIA,WHEELER.

WITH NIESE, GEE, SANTANA, DICKEY, PELFREY, BEATO, MEJIA, SCHWINDEN THE CONSTRUCTION MODULES FOR THE ROTATIONS OF ’12,’13 WILL BE IN PLACE AS IT’S HIGHLY UNLIKELY, IMO, THAT OWNERSHIP WILL STRETCH ON TIPPY-TOES TO REACH THE TOP SHELVERS AVAILABLE ON THE OPEN F/A MKT AS WE CONTINUE ALDERSON’S DESIGN OF EXPANDING THE TALENT PYRAMID FROM THE DEVELOPMENT SQUARE BASE, NOT THE TRIANGULATED TOP LEVELS OF THE APEX(ACTIVE 25) AS PRACTIVCED SINCE ’02.

I PERSONALLY LOVE THE NEW MODEL; I HAVE THE NECESSARY PATIENCE, WHO ELSE DOES?

        IMMEDIACY?

ALDERSON’S MOST IMMEDIATE CHALLENGES ARE ONLY 2:
        #1 RETAIN REYES!!!
        #2 REBUILD THE PITCHING STAFF!!!

TWO THIRDS OF OUR MOST RELABLE PEN ARE LIKELY TO BE ABSENT FROM THEIR CURRENT ROLES COME NEXT SEASON, BEATO RECONVERTED BACK TO SP DURING WINTERBALL & ST(MiLB?) & POTENTIALLY IZZY’S RE-RETIREMENT WITH HIS 300th FILLING HIS BACK POCKETS

RECONSTITUTING A RELABLE PEN WHILE CREATING A SUSTAINABLE FRONT 5 ON A CONSERVATIVE BUDGET IS UNLIKELY TO SUPPLY ANY NOTABLES FOR FANS TO GET EXCITED OVER; HOWEVER FIELD PERFORMANCE MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO DETERIORATE FURTHER.

  • Lutz is “not a gifted fielder”, and Satin is “a notch below Daniel Murphy in terms of defensive skill”? And we need more of these Omar guys who can’t play any defense because why?

    • If you want to knock the guy’s defense feel free, but why say Omar’s guys? How bad were Sandy’s guys Chin-lung Hu and Brad Emaus on defense? How good is Ike Davis on defense? And since when does defense matter with Alderson who downplays it every chance he gets? You want to say those particular players are bad defensively, go for it. But to say Omar’s guys just shows you are looking to start a new flame war on Sandy vs Omar.

      • there’s no war, we all know so far, omar has got the upper hand, i mean, in his first season the mets finished 83-79.. justsaying…

        • In 3rd place, so what difference doesn’t it make, still a losing season.

        • Upper hand? There is no upper hand when you still lose the season. Keep dreaming

        • Yes, Minaya has one more playoff appearance in 6 years than Alderson has in 6 months with the Mets.

      • In Ike Davis’s short tenure as a Met – his defense has been very good. You are part of the club I see, making up lies about Alderson, show me EVERY CHANCE HE GETS to downplay defense. Show me a link to every time he said that.

I love how people are now resorting to making up lies to bash Alderson while pumping up a GM that didn’t get the job done.

    • You got someone better?

Besides, what can it hurt to see what they can do on the big league level?

      • I think we have enough guys that match that description already. And I’m sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings, but they were Omar’s guys. When SA brings in bums, I will be the first one to say so. If I say something that people interpret as “degrading” to Omar’s legacy, I don’t mean it to be a knock on Omar. History speaks for itself. If I say something people that like Omar think is a rip at him, well that’s your opinion. But if I do say something like that, don’t for a minute think I’m trying to build a case for how SA is so wonderful, cause I am not. I am in a wait and see with Mr. Alderson, as they say, the jury is still out! Just as the jury is still out to an extent, with Omar. He still has his contributions, all over this franchise and it will be a long time before we can accurately critique his tenure. SA has certainly brought in some guys that make you scratch your head. Like the aforementioned Emaus and Hu, who by the way, he didn’t give up anything to get those guys here, all he traded for Hu was a frozen pizza and a dozen used baseballs. And Emaus cost $25,000 to take a peak at, at a time when there was no clear cut candidate to play 2B and the guy at the top of the depth chart was named Luis Castillo. As for Satin and Lutz? Seriously? I have been following these guys careers since college. Lutz intrigues me because I have seen him hit, and he’s really really good. However, his constant injuries, have decimated his feet and ankles, he has no speed, no range. I would definitely give him a shot as a back-up 1B, a pinch hitter, and that’s about it. You simply cannot rely on this guy for anything else. Now for all you guys that think I’m bashing Omar, I’m sorry, I’m trying to tell it like it is. As for Satin, I’m all for making him a September call-up, I think that would be great! Seriously. But to expect that he is suddenly going to “blossom” as a utility man is crazy cause he will cost you more games with his glove than he could ever win with his bat. And we are already trying to find a place for Daniel Murphy to play, and Duda, how many bad fielders do you want to run out there at the same time anyway? But, back to Satin, I would entertain him as a future pinch hitter, what else can I tell you?

        • I’m not trying attack or defend either Minaya or Alderson. I’m just saying, what can it hurt at this point to give them a shot?

    • I didn’t know there was “a notch below” Daniel Murphy
      when it came to fielding.

  • There can really only be one explanation of why every single Met draftee must have 1B in his resume. Because they don’t figure to stick defensively anywhere else.

Versitilty is good but this is ridiculous. The only guys we’ve drafted who’ve made it up here that DON’T have exposure to 1B are the pitchers. Even our catcher Josh Thole spent two years in the minors learning how to play 1B.

Thole, Evans, Murphy, Satin, Duda, Lutz, all 5th – 13th rounders all considered to play 1B. Why? Well it sure isn’t because they were considered likely to win gold gloves elsewhere I’ll tell you that much.

The high end talent that can both hit and play defense is found by enlarge in the first 3 rounds of the draft. Those are the guys you don’t have to hide at 1B. LF is another position guys get “exposure” to because they don’t have the talent to play RF, CF, SS but none of them are even good at any defensive position. Their just trying to be fit in anywhere and then to top it all off one of only two #1 draft choices we spent on position players went to a first basemen and then we signed a free agent LFer so what do we do with all these guys that have some use but no where to use them?

From 2005-2010, a six year period we spent,

No 1st or 2nd round picks for catchers and only one 3rd round pick.

No 1st round picks for OFers in six years and only one #2 and one #3.

Two #1 picks for free agent closers and a supplemental round pick, two 2nd round picks and three 3rd round picks on relief pitchers.

That’s EIGHT 1st-3rd round picks on the bullpen (for 6 spots and approximately 50 innings per year per reliever)

Is it really any wonder how we wind up with first basemen and third basemen at corner OF and catcher?

During that same time period we spent a #1 pick (Alou) and #2 (Bay) and a #3 (Beltran) to address the dearth of OFers provided during the Phillips Duquette error.

Those two combined to draft ZERO catchers in the 1st-3rd rounds over a seven year period.

They also combined to draft only four OFers in the 1st-3rd rounds over a seven year period.

Phillips also spent three #2 picks on OFers after the fact. Cedeno, Cameron and Floyd who predictably left nothing behind when their tour of duty here was finished.

Can anyone see a corelation between no good homegrown catchers or out fielders and our draft strategy over the prior 13 years?

How about a correlation between the 5th-13th round and not being able to play defense?

How can you spend so many early round draft choices (2 #1′s, a Supp pick, two #2′s and 3 3rd rounders) on the bullpen and so little for your starting eight position players?

Who on this team can you just pencil into an everyday starting spot and just leave them there? Wright (supp round #38) Reyes (IFA) Davis (1st round #18) Pagan (4th round)

These other guys all get switched around from day to day to avoid over exposure and see where their glove will do the least harm. It really is a joke the way this team has been run under the entire span of the Wilpon error going all the way back to 1987, their first season as full 50% partners.

  • Is this player info just copied and pasted from Rubin’s post?

  • Amen 62

What about Captain Kirk, any chance he is healthy and get a look cause seeing another year of Pagan and his inconsistencies is not good for the mind.

    • Kirk’s torn labrum not only cost him this year, but they can spend up to a year trying to get his mechanics back.

  • Thanks for info Donal
