Of course, none of the old guys in that book were making $8 million a year. And the guy putting that team together didn’t have a huge payroll. And that book was mainly about an experiment that had some positive results.

As constituted, we have our greatest weakness in the middle of the order. You CAN’T WIN without a dangerous 3-4-5. With Wright and Bay in those roles, we’re dead in the water. Our future rests in the hands of Duda and Ike. If they develop into true power threats, the Mets will be back towards the top faster than expected, if they keep Jose Reyes around. If they don’t, WE’RE DEAD because this team isn’t going to spend money on free agents for years to come.

Catcher can be filled by 2 players. Usually is.
2B should be filled from within.
LF should belong to one of our kids in the minors by the middle of next season. Who cares, because that’s the #6/#7 hitter.
The pen needs Parnell and Beato to step up and take control of the 8th and 9th innings next season. We need 2 guys to fill the 7th/8th as well.

Nothing is as important as the top of the rotation and the middle of the order hitters, though.
CF is a big time problem. That could be the #2 hitter or the #7 hitter.

The idea that we need “development” is pretty crazy. Each year, Omar’s kids continue to make an imprint on the squad. We’re .500 because we lack true impact hitters in the middle of the order and we’re missing 2 top of the rotation pitchers. Four of the hardest positions to fill in all baseball. The question is (or should be)
Which ones are tradable prospect should Reyes re-sign and what is the potential return for them?

How many are High rounded picks? Who is most likely to get something back we DO need etc…
I know that wasn’t the focus of your piece so don’t take this as a knock.
But I think it’s pretty clear to anyone who listens to Collins that Tejada is something of a lock to play SS should Reyes go elsewhere and with the uncertainty remaining if 2B is still a good place to put Murphy I don’t see where any of the kids mentioned are actually going to have a place to play.

Thats not meant to knock their worth just a reality that says these guys are all more likely to be traded than promoted to wear a Met uni.
