Please Don’t Make Terry Collins A Lame Duck In 2012

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, a team official told him that while there have been no internal discussions about picking up the 2013 option on Terry Collins’ contract, that discussion could happen in the next three to four weeks.

A high-ranking Mets source said yesterday that there have been “no internal discussions” about picking up the Collins option, but predicted those discussions would happen in the next “three to four weeks,” and did not rule out the possibility of guaranteeing that third year shortly after the season ends.

The team is pleased with its first-year manager’s performance, Martin adds, especially considering most of the big-leaguers have been hurt or traded.

I wouldn’t have a problem with giving the Mets skipper some job security going into the 2012 season after the job he’s done this season with a the terrible hand he was dealt.

Collins signed a two-year contract with a team option for a third year last Winter, after a prolonged manager search by Sandy Alderson.

I don’t like the idea of having Terry Collins as a lame duck manager in 2012. In this town, and with the cuckoo birds on social media, it will only lead to a barrage of “Joke of the Day” blurbs on Collins after every loss or issue and honestly, he deserves a better fate than that.

  • I agree with the sentiment that Collins has done well, The team has responded to him and he put a fight into them that has not been seeen since the 80′s.

But despite all that we should wait to see if they continue to respond to him, continue to fight before you go for that 3rd year. Since there is really nothing to negotiate here there is no rush to activate the option just yet. Sometime next season around May would be a good time.

  • second verse same as the foist.in 2008 as the mets were caving like a cheap tent minaya was extended past 2009 because why?he was extended because the wilponzie mob drew 4 million fans and were happy with the money flow… the cave in meant nothing to them the monies did!now andy martino cries for terry collins not to be a lame duck.i say a lame duck for a lame team. who better to lead a lame group of quitters.a year ago terry collins was DEAD in baseball he would have crawled on his knees to freddye wilponzies hole and begged him for a chance to be a lame duck.don’t worry terry freddye loves you or rather your tiny salary.hey genisousalderson what ya gonna due with reyes?

    • foist? LOL,

I can envision baby al in a classic old cabbie’s hat chomping on a big stogie w/a 5 o’clock shadow lol

      • bayonne, is this the same baby al from back 2009???

        • It’s the same baby al from all recent years. He’s one of a kind and is sometimes both funny and right on the money.

    • he also wasn’t dead a year ago. he was working for the Mets, I believe as the organizational coordinator (whatever the actual title was for that).

Who knows if he even wants to continue that long?

  • the manager is largely irrelevant

    • Except when you don’t know how to do a double switch!

    • Yeah, we should have kept Jerry Manuel, he’s a gangsta! You need to have your head examined.

      • jerry manuel is proper stupid, and even he didnt do too terribly. the players on the field win and lose the games. any baseball man that is smart enough to go by the book is fine. there are innuerable washed out minor league catchers that understand the game well enough to do the job, and especially if they are told by the front office to simply play the percentages.

  • I vote to have Terry Collins signed at the end of this season – or before.

I’ve never seen a stranger (Terry had never been the Mets manager before) come into the Mets clubhouse, and end the season with the relationships that he has made during this season. Terry has a sense of humanity not often found in a major league clubhouse and he’s nurtured these guys all year so far. They’ve made themselves a close team and that’s an amazing result of this unusual year.

So, my vote is for Terry – the sooner, the better.

    • I agree but if I was TC I would put a few things into my Mets contracr:
      1. No deductible in the health care plan for psychiatric treatments.

      2. A gallon of Pepto Bismol in his office at all times.

      3. A padded office.

      4. A private bar in the office fully stocked with 20 year old single malt
      Scotch.

      5. And finally, private time set aside for a good crying jag.

      Signed,

      Terry Collins
