Well, over managing can cost a game.

You're right that during the game, the manager doesn't do a whole lot. Even pitching changes are done with the advice of the pitching coach.

But he is still the guy between the players and the front office. He's got to know who is hurting, who has a gripe, who needs to be sent back down etc. He's got to get the info from his staff and make a decision and bring it to the FO.

A lot of the praise heaped on managers is a bunch of media hooey, but its not like they are just mannequins in uniform.

Slow news day huh!

Terry has done a good job considering he didn't have his whole lineup healthy and playing for maybe 7 days or so.
The way he keeps his players, especially the young ones into the game, never giving up is a great thing for this team considering the years when after an injury or big lead the game was over.

He will get an extension after the season is over or before next if needed. There is no rush to sign an extension when he hasn't even finished this season, what if he blows his top or makes a major blunder then Mets are tied to him for more than 2012.

good managers are not scarce and they have little to do with wins and losses. you should pay them very little and not extend their contracts. they can be replaced.

I don't think Collins is in fear of his job. I'm sure he'll get a new deal if not the offseason, then during next season. As long as he maintains his current success, the only way he isn't managing this team is if he gets promoted somehow.

Des - I Agree it's too soon to extend him...But I do think he has done a great job and if his contract was up at the end of the year (not a year from now) he would or should be extended!

Collins has done a great job, but that is not a reason to extend a new contract with two months to go in the current season. This hyperbole is just a circulation stunt by the Post. It will all be worked out at the season's end. (Remember the pressure the newspapers put on Mets management with Willie. No more of that for the Mets.)

Yes! I agree he has pretty much silenced the naysayers and won over the doubters (which included me!) with the way he has handled and inspired this team!

One of the main apprehensions I had about him was his quitting at his last managerial position but it seems to me he learned a LOT from that experience! The fact he LEARNED from mistakes is the single most impressive thing to me! I don't care that you make them just as long as you learn from them!
