well, they don't go on the 40 man any sooner than they have to be, since once on, they can't come off without risk of losing them.

I assume harvey there was supposed to be Havens!

If they are so close, why aren't they already on the 40 man? Why aren't they in Buffalo at least?

"They are hoping to accelerate the development of guys like Harvey in hopes of promoting them to be a starter sooner."

What does Harvey have to do with any of this?

Lousy teams send multiple players to the Arizona Fall League every year.

Not sure how this indicates anything other than standard operating procedure.

Havens missed a ton of time (again) this year; Mets probably want him to get more ABs against quality opposition so that the year isn't a total wash.

RECENT NEWS ON HAVENS (repost)

MICHAEL DIAZ
“Reese Havens can flat out hit. He is very quiet at the plate, but has some juice in that bat. Havens singled, homered, and worked a walk on the night. His homer was a two-run shot in the top of the first, a no doubter to right centerfield. He worked himself into good hitting counts, and shows good pitch recognition. Nothing surprising out of Havens as he showed is a very good player, when he is healthy and on the field.”

TED BERG
Ted Berg takes a look at 2008 Mets first round draft pick and B-Mets 2B Reese Havens, speaking with Toby Hyde, Wally Backman and Havens about his progress and future:

BINGHAMTON PRESS-CONNECTS
Reese Havens’ three-run homer in the sixth inning Tuesday night highlighted the Binghamton Mets’ 6-4 come-from-behind Eastern League victory against the Erie SeaWolves at NYSEG Stadium.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE (Web site)

. . . Mets fans tend to forget that Reese Havens was the Mets second first-round selection in 2008, behind Davis. Injuries have been the name of the game for Havens ever since he got drafted. Be it a bad back, a rib discomfort or a strained oblique, there has always been some form of malady to keep Havens on the sideline.

However, when he has been healthy, he has always performed. He has plus-power out of the second base position (he was a shortstop in college) and has always been credited with great plate discipline and gap-to-gap ability, both huge qualities Sandy Alderson looks for. As Toby Hyde of MetsMinorLeagueBlog has pointed out, the only reason why Havens may not get a September audition is because the Mets are likely to send him to the Arizona Fall League to get more at-bats.

The significance is that it appears the FO believe we are a lot CLOSER to competing than you give the team credit for!

They are hoping to accelerate the development of guys like Harvey in hopes of promoting them to be a starter sooner.

If they felt the way YOU DO about the state of this team they wouldn't bother because they would agree with you that this team is YEARS away from competing and they would not want to rush these guys until the team was actually ready to help them succeed!

Sandy said it just recently in case you missed it.
"We are going to try and BUILD on the success of the FIRST FOUR MONTHS we had this season" (in regards to Reyes and potential Trades)

And by accelerating the development of these kids he won't have to do the tear down you all would like him to do!

Well it does underline what I have been trying to say here recently.

Yes we ALL agree pitching is a weakness and the guys we have starting are not exactly world beaters, more like middle aged servicable who need a solid pen to rack up the Ws.

But the idea of trading all the good guys we have for pitching tends to neglect the fact of all the pitching we have poised to be promoted soon.

That said I am a little concerned they are going to the AFL which is notorious for inflating hitting and power stats of batters because thats not really the type of place you want to send a young pitcher who needs to build confidence but I do recognize that if they can pitch well there then they might be able to keep the ball in the park in a more normal environment.

I'm really not a big fan of sending Pitching prospects to play Winterball merely because it puts undue stress and deprives them of the normal recovery time you get during the Winter.
I know they learn more but you can't apply what you have learned or maintain confidence if you run out of Gas when it counts or get hurt and wind up on the DL because you blew your arm out.

I don't mean we should be babying them but I see no benefit to overworking them either!

Is there a significance to this? I'm not being snarky, I am really curious.

Like, is this the Mets way of saying "we want these guys on our 40 man roster" or something like that?

What I liked was reading how Harvey seems to not just be trying to get by on his physical ability but also learning how to pitch when he said,

“I play a game within the game,” Harvey said. “And each hitter is my own game.”

Also finding out that Don Carman was now a sports psychologist was interesting. I wonder if Pelfrey ever considered talking to him?

Off Topic as it doesn’t pertain to any of the above players in this post but there is a nice little write up regarding Matt Harvey in today’s Star Ledger. In particular there was one paragraph that when I read it immediately made me say “from your mouth to God’s ears” that the Mets should be so lucky.

If all goes well, both Harvey and Familia are expected to appear at some point for the Mets in 2012. In a perfect world, all three pitchers would arrive in the majors by 2013. “That’s how you try to create a dynasty,” Backman said.
