Well, I never did say he was great, only popular with the fans and useful as a utility guy. It was more a piece about Turner anyway. Sorry if you didn’t like it.

I think many fans liked Joe McEwing because:

1) He was white
2) He had grey hair
3) Everybody played softball with at least one guy who was as talented as McEwing

Around All-Star Break, I had written the Top 50 Most Notorious Mets. At my sister site, Kiners Korner, we all agreed that McEwing made the list. I have no idea to this day why this dude is still so revered in Mets culture. Mostly, it seems like for a super-utility guy, he played all the time, and he always sucked. He had a great attitude. OK. But he still sucked.

I think one of the main reasons Super Joe almost reached mythical status among Mets fans even though he was a utility guy was that he owned Randy Johnson. And I’m surprised that’s not mentioned in this article because every time I think of Joe McEwing his domination of Randy Johnson is the first thing that comes to mind, especially during the 1999 season.

If not for the fact he owned Randy Johnson i don’t think we would remember him as much.

The Mets were in the TOILET when Omar got here, Metro. Amazing how most unintelligent fans think Omar “ran the Mets into the ground” when the team was an utter and complete EMBARRASSMENT from 2002-2004. Omar Minaya turned them into a relevant team in NYC again.

This guy was terrible. I wonder why people liked this guy and why is this website giving this guy props. Fernando Tatis was 100X’s the player this stiff was. I don’t get the love for McEwing. I was ecstatic when Omar cut this guy.

This article overstates the value of Joe McEwing to the Mets in those years. In reality he was mediocre and a pretty poor player with very little in the way of true accomplishment. As a jack of all trades and master of none, he did nothing very well. The other comical aspect was that Tony LaRussa worshipped the ground he walked on, which says a lot about LaRussa’s mental acuity. Turner has the potential to be a much more capable player than McEwing ever was. All just my opinion. If you loved McEwing, you’re entitled to your opinion. I think he essentially stunk.
