How The Pelfrey For Closer Conversation Went Down…

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, Terry Collins and unidentified team officials asked Mike Pelfrey if he would consider being converted to a closer.

“Would you be willing to be the closer next year?” Terry Collins asked the pitcher, according to someone who was briefed on, but did not witness or participate in, the conversation.

“Absolutely,” Pelfrey responded.

Martino goes on to say that any chance of this happening is “highly unlikely” because GM Sandy Alderson is said to be averse to it and his vote is the only vote that counts.

But seriously, the fact that this is even being discussed really does underscore how badly the Mets want Pelfrey out of the rotation and how far he has fallen down the organizational ladder. You see… It’s not just me!

  • i don’t see the harm in trying it out. Maybe it works, if not than you’re back to where you are now. And why can’t they try it out this year like maybe in September when they call up the minor leaguers? And why the hell is white flag Sandy against it?

Hey man, whatever it takes to look for a winner. If it doesn’t work out then you’re back to square one so you have nothing to lose

    • Hey Joe! That picture is hilarious!

    • “like maybe in September when they call up the minor leaguers?” Haven’t you noticed? The minor leaguers are here already. We don’t need any more new ones.

    • WHY BE AGAINST IT? BAYONNE, THINK ABOUT IT IN THE ROTATION HE SCREWS UP 1G EVERY WEEK, OUT OF THE PEN, MAYBE 3 OR 4
PERSONALLY I BELIEVE “unidentified team officials” IS A EUPHENISM FOR JEFF WIPON’S NAME AS WITH ALDERSON’S OBJECTION HE’S THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD AUTHORIZE TC TO BROACH THE SUBJECT.

UNLESS THIS IS ALL PREPARATION FOR COUNTERING BORAS’ ARBI CASE BY PORTRAYIN G PELF AS A FUTURE RELIEVER WHERE CURRENT SALARY KLEVEL IS AN ABUNDANCE NOT REQUIRING AN INCREASE. PERSONALLY, I THINK WE SHJOULD ALL BE THANKFUL THE MARINES HAVE LANDED IN THE FO

  • Until Mike gets his head back on straight and remembers that he is a ground ball pitcher I would not trust him any where the 9th unless finishing a game he started. Nope, No Way!

  • hahahahahaha Pelfrey for closer yeah right!!!! I think Collins has lost his marbles.

  • Not a bad idea, but I would be afraid of seeing him in a high pressure situation given his lack of mental toughness.

Why not put him in the closer role for the rest of the year and give Schwinden a shot in the rotation? You see if Pelf can be a successful closer and see the same with Schwinden if he can be successful in the MLB. I say do it now to get a sample before ST 2012!

  • I went to Arizona to see the Mets last week. Saw the game on the 13th. Sitting right below where Roberts hit his Hr.and looking right into Diamondbacks bullpen. Nice stadium. Alot of similarities to Citifield and of course we lost.

  • He dosent have the stuff to close. He’s too hitable. Closer’s have to strike people out.

  • Maybe the theory is that if he doesn’t have to think long, he won’t think wrong. Just bring his heat and sinkers for an inning at a time. Only problem is that he stinks in the first inning.

    • He’s not too good in the rest of the innings either.

  • Pelfrey as closer is a terrible idea. A closer needs to excel under pressure, but that is where Pelfrey melts. He is awful at holding runners on base. He is deficient in most areas where closers need to excel. The one thing he will most likely achieve as closer is a ML record for most blown saves.

  • It just shows how valuable some organizations think a closer is. Pelf in a pressure cooker? I guffaw.

  • Actuallt the conversation went like this:
TC: “Het Big Pelf how would you like to close for awhile?”
MP: “You mean I could sit in the bullpen all game and text my buds and twitter my fans all game and then come in and pitch the ninth and go home.”
TC: “Yeah that is how it usually works but you must be able to hold a lead and get the win.”
MP: “You mean I can’t walk anyone or give up any hits or throw balls in the dirt and all that stuff I normally do?”
TC: “Well yes, that is what a closer does.”
MP: “I’m sorry you’ll have to excuse me n ow, I’m starting to break out in a cold sweat and I think i’m going to faint!”
TC: “Oh , hey there’s RC, hey RC can I have a word with you?”

  • And what makes you think the Mets even need a closer, oh I get it, to keep us out of last place, yeah that’s why we need a closer!

  • I’d rather the Mets ask Pelfry if he’d like to be the 5th starter on the Astros next year.

  • What an absolutely ridiculous idea!

While at it, let’s make Igarashi a starter.

  • Bobby O’s opinion on the subject of Pelf for closer:

    ‘Absolutely not’.
    - Ks – not many, not enough. Not a strikeout pitcher.
    - Not a ground ball pitcher anymore.
    - Does not keep runners on base well.
    - Sinker not working.
    - Averages more than one hit per innings pitched. Not a good recipe out of the BP where everything is condensed.
    - Nerves, especially with runners on: ill timed suggestion, might set him back even further.

    • Excellent points! To which I would just add…he sucks!!!

  • Wow, finally a topic in which all the replying posts are on the same page. Seems pretty unanimous regarding our views of Big Pelf.

    • yeah big puss. as a closer, lmao!

  • I can’t think of a Pitcher with a WORSE Mental makeup for a closer than pelfrey!

I mean Perez had a better head because he at least thought he could get people out!
I don’t get that sense from Pelfrey!
