There are less than 16 hours remaining for all teams to sign any players they selected from the 2011 June Amateur Draft as the midnight deadline gets ever so closer.
While most of the attention for Mets fans has been on first round pick Brandon Nimmo, there are other players the Mets have yet to sign and they include third round pick RHP Scott Verrett, 11th round selection RHP Christian Montgomery, 12th round selection LHP Kent Matthews, and 15th round selection SS Phillip Evans. Those are the main ones, but about 15 other players in addition to them are still unsigned according to Mets.com.
Yesterday, Mike Puma of the NY Post spoke to Brandon Nimmo’s father who didn’t sound very optimistic and said, “We’re pretty much at the same place we were on June 6″. However, according to Adam Rubin, a Mets source told him that a deal will get done today. We’ll see.
Third round pick RHP Scott Logan Verrett could be close to signing and took a trip to New York for a physical this weekend. That’s definitely a good sign.
It should be a pretty eventful day for the Mets as we get closer to the deadline, so keep it tuned to MMO and I will update this post as the news trickles in.

something’s gotta give, most likely we will over pay him, then he’ll become exactly what pretty much the players the mets draft become… A BUST!!!
is a shame what baseball has become, kids from high school now hold the leverage over a major league baseball club supposely run by smart ppl… ugh
Ya, it sucks that people can get full value for their talents. Things were better back when players were indentured servants.
what???? TALENTS??? FULL VALUE??? first of all, show me talent and i’ll show you a rabbit dancing the robot while playing guitar in NY, listen lickety, is he a “high ceiling” player with some what baseball skills? yes, but remember, high school talent doesnt translate to the Majors, rememebr alex ochoa????? bro, i even saw him in the DWL, this kid was a STUD who even helped EL LICEY win the championship out there,i mean, this guy was a no doubt type of player.. ALL THE TALENT IN THE WORLD, 5 tools player, u name it, then what happened?? he got to the majors.. there’s a what, maybe 7% chance he’d be good in the majors lickety, 7%!!!
Alex, based on your theory, we shouldn’t scout at all. We would probably be doomed no matter what we do. I like it. Lets go with that!!!
So, because one guy failed, all will fail?
Yes, there are no sure things. Not draft picks, not trades, not IFAs not big league FAs.
But, in this case, Nimmo has something big league teams want (a butt load of raw talent) and he has a bargaining chip to use (a full ride to Arkansas). He may never get this chance again because, like you said, he may indeed be a bust.
So, Nimmo is going to get everything he thinks he can and the Mets will negotiate with him and try and get him for the least amount they can.
It’s called capitalism. Or would you prefer the teams basically own the players the way they own the uniforms?
time will tell right.. 13 hours to go…….. tick tock…
Alex it’s Tigres del Licey.
Alex – most HS anythings do not reach the elite of their profession. Nimmo has a much, much higher probability than most. So does bubba starling and a few others in this draft.
According to BaseballAmerica, the Mets have also signed their 16th round pick, Brad Marquez.
You can’t please all of the people all of the time. Most Met fans have complained throughout the years that the Mets haven’t spent enough on the Rule 4 draft. Well today, the Mets are going to dole out app. 3.5MM in signing bonuses to sign Nimmo,Verrett,Evans and Marquez.
Tis better to sign them all and have a few flop than not sign any at all…
That’s right, and in three years all those kids would have been asking for Dylan Bundy money.
