Another Preposterous Idea
![]()
If last week’s frightening thought of putting Mike Pelfrey in the closer role wasn’t bad enough, here is something just as baffling from Andy Martino of the Daily News.
Imperfect circumstances call for creative solutions, and in recent weeks the Mets have kicked around many ideas for 2012. In that spirit, a well-placed front office source said it is “a possibility” that the Mets will move Jason Bay to center field next year.
The mere thought of such a preposterous idea tells me that Martino’s team sources never stray too far from the kitchen area at the rear of Shake Shack.
Nobody would ever confuse Martino of being a Mensa, but come on already, lets get real here, Martino.
I’m not going to waste my time on a one thousand word diatribe detailing why putting Jason Bay in centerfield would be a recipe for disaster, because those of you who watch the games already know why. But suffice it to say that anyone who matters in the Mets front office would laugh at the suggestion of putting Bay in center. The only place this front office wants to put Bay, is out to pasture.

wow… ummmm.. yeah, there’s just no way to comment on this w/o saying words like disaster, atrocious, horrendous, martino suck.. etc..
I’M MUCH MORE APALLED BY THE CONCEPT OF MURPHY’S LF RETURN THAN BAY IN CF. I’VE LONG SUSPECTED THAT MARTINO LONGED FOR THE DAYS OF 2007 WHEN HE COULD WRITE IN SUPPORT OF THE PH’IN PHILLIES WHILE SLOWLY TORTURING ANY NYM FANS. I’VE LONG BELIEVED HIS S&M COMPUNCTIONS LED HIM, AS A CHILD, PULLING LEGS OFF OF ANTS & WINGS OFF OF FLIES, IF NOT ALREADY OSTRICIZED BY NYM FRONTOFFICE TYPES, ONE WOULD HOPE HIS BLOODLUST HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED FROM WITHIN AS EXECS SCRAMBLE TO ELUDE HIS CONTACT. WHILE HE DIPS HIS PEN INTO THE CHUM BUCKET REPEATEDLY!
at best, he could be the emergency back up. But not seeing him capable of being a functining starting CF at this point!
well, he also doesn’t hit enough to start anywhere, but that is another issue!
Imagine an outfield of Murphy in LF, Bay in CF and Duda in RF? Wow, that might be the worst outfield of all time!
lmao!!!!! lighten up man.. remember we had bubba trammel, mcewing and darryl hamilton playing the OF during the 2000 season?? lol
Would this be some sort of a platoon with Pridie? Would the Mets non tenter Pagan?
It is credible and it’s because they probably won’t tender Pagan and they are stuck w Bays contract w the hopes there is a reversion to the mean w Bays career stats and he figures out his swing in the offseason. I’ll add probably no Pagan as they announced they not adding to payroll $100-115 million team payroll tops and Pagan salary gets to close to$6mill So Pridie is a lock to make team for defense. Decreases the chances Murph becomes everyday OF and increases the chances they bring in the walls. Bay has decent OF instincts I actually think he’d be fine, he will see defensive replacement for him or shift to LF late in game…The plus of Bay in cf is there is zero chance of Mets being competitive w $110million payroll unless we take chances, if Bay is productive in cf it beats a pagan or pride no upside situation, and gives us another slot to upgrade offense, Duda looks like he’ll play almost everyday next year I’m sure they’ll get another Hairston type as well…eh too early to figure out offseason moves….
Unless Adam Rubin comes out and says this is a real possibility I’m not believing this is even on the table. Martino needs new material to write about.
Who cares what Martino says, he’s the worst Mets beat writer!
Martino said something dumb to whip Mets fans into a frenzy? Good heavens! We’ve never seen this before. He’s usually so well informed and logical. Fan baiting is in no way part of his usual MO.
OK Joe D I need some help. what exactly is the symbolism behind the cow grazing out in the field?
Out to pasture, I’m guessing.
Bessy is about to drop a story idea for Martino.
taking a donal!!!
I think Murphy back in the outfield is the bigger blunder in the story.
If there is even a shred of truth here, it says a lot about Angel Pagan’s prospects with the team.
odd use of the word mitigated.
Well……this IS the same organization that thought the following players would work out well in center field:
1. Juan Samuel
2. Keith Miller
3. Howard Johnson
4. Vince Coleman
You know, after the debacles that the aforementioned experiments turned into you would think such idiotic ideas would be a thing of the past for this team. Apparently, however, someone who was a part of the Mets F/O in the 90′s is still employed with the Mets. More likely this is an attempt to find a story where there is none. I hope so anyway.
Hojo in center.
BRILLIANT!
I agree with Ben. Martino isn’t really that credible in my opinion, so until i hear this from someone like Steve Popper, Adam Rubin, or any other actual baseball source, then i’ll know its a true possiblity.
As for the move to CF, its not going to make a difference. If Bay can’t perform in LF, what makes the Mets think he will perform if he moves to another outfield position such as centerfield. Give me a break…..
This has nothing to do with improving Bay’s performance. It’s about doing a salary dump by getting rid of Pagan. Player performance is not the issue here; lowering spending IS the issue.
If Bay becomes the hitter the Mets signed for I don’t thinks it is the worst idea. He is a decent fielder. This talk is more about Pagan.
At this point I think the best way forward for Bay is to pay a big chunk of his salary and trade him for some middle inning bullpen help.
Some team who has a short LF might be willing to make that trade if we agree to pay most of his Salary.
As for CF, I would be fine with Pride there if Murphy could learn to play RF and Duda plays left to get both bats in the lineup.
I’ll take the lesser bat to have the better fielding in CF that can help get to balls that Duda and Murphy might not.
But the big question on that plan is can Murphy actually play the OF.
you want pridie on CF?? i mean.. really??
Maybe in an emergency/platoon switch type move but despite playing a good LF Bay does not have the covering speed to play the big gaps at Citi.
As you said JoeD, with the Pelfrey deal, another article to give Met fans fodder and fill blog time.
