Trade Deadline Updates

With less than 24 hours to go until the non-waiver trade deadline (Sunday, 4PM EST), here is what’s gone down so far tonight.

Done Deals

The Pirates have announced that they have acquired Derrek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles for minor league first baseman Aaron Baker. Lee gives the Bucs some pop in the lineup and great defense at first base.

Orlando Cabrera has been traded to the San Francisco Giants by the Indians in exchange for outfield prospect Thomas Neal.

The Rockies traded their ace Ubaldo Jimenez to the Cleveland Indians for minor league prospects Drew Pomeranz, Alex White, Matt McBride, and a PTBNL. Indians are acquiring a pitcher who could give them quality starts as they try to get back into the hunt.

The Nationals traded P Jason Marquis to the D’Backs before his scheduled start against the Mets today.  The Nationals get Zach Walters in return for Marquis.  The D’Backs get a veteran pitcher who can hopefully deliver for them down the stretch.

The Orioles traded P Kori Uehara to the Texas Rangers for prospects Chris Davis, and Tommy Hunter. The Rangers definitely get some much needed help in the bullpen.

Latest Rumors

Scott Miller of CBSSports.com has reported that outfielder Ryan Ludwick is likely to be traded to the Indians sometime Sunday.

The D’Backs are still working to acquire a reliever and it sounds as though they expect to complete a deal, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

The Nationals, Braves, Indians and Reds are in on Michael Bourn, reports Fox Sports. Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports the Braves are going hard after Bourn. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports agrees.

More trades are expected to go down as the clock winds down.  Stay tuned!

  • Pirates for Lee… Sure. I mean I don’t think it makes them that much better. Lee is on his way out to pasture soon. Low impact deal.

Cabrera to the Giants is a nice grab by San Fran since they have had so many infield problems and Cleveland has Kipnis up at 2B. He’s a depth difference maker.

I don’t like the Ubaldo deal for Cleveland. I get the idea that he is an “ace” but he’s been an “ace” 1 out of 4 big league seasons. That’s not an Ace. There were questions about NYY wanting to give him a physical BEFORE the agreement was reached, which COL said no to. He still has to pass a physical and I am sure he will. But Colorado sold VERY high on Ubaldo. Great trade by Colorado

D’Backs for Marquis. Low impact, but not a bad grab

I think Texas overpaid for a 36 yr old reliever. If they win it all this year then who cares right? But Tommy Hunter can be a starter and is just 25. His injury problems are a concern. Davis was a top prospect but not able to translate his AAA mashing into big league mashing. But he is just 25 as well, and now with Lee gone he gets a chance. I like the move by Baltimore.

It seems to me that a lot of “in it” teams are overpaying for now talent.

  • I’vew long established that I am not a baseball (generic) fan, an NFL fan,NBA or even NHL interested party.
I AM HOWEVER, A NEW YORK METS FAN and as such ONLY what the Braves,Phls have accomplished are of any concern to me vis-a-vis commentary. Braves ALL-IN on Bourne not as frightening as their once rumored interest in Upton, where’s that gone? Fortunately games Vs. Pirates are ALL in our rearview this Season. I’d love to see the Fish get overwhelmed in prospects for Gaby Sanchez our perennial thorn amoung a bush of thorns as we’ve so many bouts against them to go
