Ryota Igarashi Called Up

After the Francisco Rodriguez deal left the door open for someone to be called up to replace his roster spot, the Mets wasted no time. Ryota Igarashi has been confirmed to have been called up by David Waldstein. Ryota has basically become a three-pitch respectable reliever – throwing a fastball, curveball, and the occasional change-up. Igarashi’s stats down in AAA were nothing short of great:

In 31.0 IP, Igarashi has a 0.87 ERA and a .774 WHIP. He has finished 13 games and saved 5 games. He has posted a 9.9 K/9 rate and has only allowed 2 HRs. He’s held opposing hitters to a .139 AVG against so one can only hope Igarashi has finally found himself and will have similar success with the Mets.

Here’s to success for the Izzy/Iggy confusion! (Although only one of them is short 7 saves of 300.)

  • I’ve been a really big fan of Iggy since he came to the team. Before he got injured last year he was doing outstanding. I hope he can keep up the success he was having in AAA.

    • Ageed!! I loved his stuff at the begining of last yr. I thought we found our 8th inning setup man… But injury seemed to keep him down for the yr. Hope he has that magic back that I saw last yr.

  • (SIGH).. i mean.. acosta, carrasco, iggy?? good luck the rest of the year..

  • real quick, for those defending the move that alderson did, he basically will pay 10 million between this year and the buy out for krod.. and got nothing!!!!!!!

Source: #Brewers get almost $6M in K-Rod deal. #Mets pay slightly less than half of remaining $4.9M, responsible for $3.5M buyout. #MLB

    • that’s 8.4 million for NOTHING!!!!! had he release krod would’ve been better then.. again, great job by salderson, keep drinking the kool aid mets fans. i would’ve at least give him to the yankees for cervelli.. instead, send him to milwaukee, pay him 8.4 million, then pick a player from one of the worst farm in baseball (ranked 28th) and also, pick the bottom 20 players in the org. so, he basically is not even allowed to touch the crap they got, is more like pick whatever you want, not from that pile of garbage, dig deeper and beyond the pile of garbage.. lmao.. whjat a great move!!!!

      • You mean 6 million for nothing right?

8.4 is the repoted rough total that is due.

“Alderson said the Mets are helping Milwaukee cover “a substantial portion, but not all” of the roughly $8.4 million Rodriguez is due from them this year.”

        newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/07/14/sandy-alderson-k-rod-trade-doesnt-mean-fire-sale-for-mets/

So Rosenthal’s repot that the Brewers get slightly under $6M seems about right.

I believe it was reported the Mets spoke to the Yankees about KRod but couldnt strike a deal. It is reported he even made one last round of calls but it seems the Brewers still had the best deal so they did it.

You mention about the “pick the bottom 20 players in the org” I read where Doug Melvin said yesterday it would not be what he described the players the Mets could choose from as not our “top top” players. I was looking to see something more specific regarding that. Where can I find the reference to the “pick the bottom 20 players in the org” that you mentioned?

        • NJ: In about 15 minutes my blog will post with 1 of the guys I believe is on the list.

By the way the Mets spent $6mil to not spend $17.5m and get 2 minor leaguers

For $11.5mil alex you could buy Niese+Dickey+Cap+Ike+Gee+Paulino and still have money left

      • Alex, what are you talking about? You can’t buy KRod out if his option vests. If he hits the games finishes he gets $17.5 mil guaranteed whether he is released or in uniform. The buyout only kicks in IF the option does not vest.

The deal has almost nothing to do with the 2 players in return and everything to do with not spending $17.5m on a guy who’s job it is to get 3 outs for a hovering .500 baseball team.

If KRod stayed with the Mets, his option would vest. There was no way around that. Which means the Mets had 1 option. Pay him $17.5mil.

The only way the Mets pay $3.5mil is IF KRod doesn’t qualify for a contract next year, something that would not have happened if he were a Met

        • umm.. so, again, do you honestly believe that milwaukee will be STUPID ENOUGH to let that vest kick in?? as you say, they ARE on first place tied with the cardinals, they won’t pay krod that money, trust me, once again, we spent 8.4 million and got nothing in return, is it fair to say that?? if the owner can’t afford the team, sell it!!!!!!

          • Alex: I’m honestly not sure you are understanding the deal.

First of all where are you getting the $8.4mil number?

Secondly, no I do not think the option will vest but if anything happens to Axford, it will.

Also, it was a guarantee it’d vest if he stayed with the Mets. Which means the Mets must pay $17.5m. So rather than do that, they offered to cover the buy out if Milwaukee doesn’t have to pay him.

If Axford gets hurt and KRod closes and vests, the Mets also save the $3.5m buyout.

        • Alex: And it’s $6m not $8m. Read your own post.

“Brewers get almost $6M in K-Rod deal.”

“#Mets pay slightly less than half of remaining $4.9M” Even if it was exactly half that’s $2.475m

“responsible for $3.5M buyout.” Take 2.475 and add 3.5m. You get 5.9mil and change

So the Mets are paying $6m and getting 2 players rather than pay almost $18mil.

Again, if KRod was a Met they wouldn’t get the chance to buy him out for $3.5. They’d be on the hook for $17.5. The only way you can pay $3.5 is if he doesn’t qualify for the 2012 contract

      • by the way “had he released k-rod” is an invalid point

#1 He couldn’t release him this year because the players union would pounce.

#2 If he waited til the off-season to release him, they’d still be on the hook for $17.5m
