T, I don’t see the logic of allowing 1y become an obstacle and you won;’t need to wait long for the answer to the value of a high productivity, visibility 33 yr old SS as a F/A since J-Roll recreates that exact scenerio this coming offseason as he was born in ’78.

I have felt for a while that DW would not be here past 2013 (when his option years finish). Of course, how he performs (and his health) over the next 2 years will have a big part in what the team decides to do.

But, would not be surprising if the team sees him hitting age 31 and tailing off a bit, and not being in the mood to offer a huge 5+ year deal for him.

This is it for jose. His next deal won’t be anywhere near it. Of course if they were to sign Jose for 20 mil, then Wright is gone. They need a bigger bopper than Wright and he ain’t in their farm system, so they will have to pay big money for him. They also need another stud pitcher. Anybody really think Johan is comeing back like a top number one? He was already fading a bit before this injury. If the stud pitcher cannot come from the farm system, that is anoher mega deal. They do not need a Yankee like lineup to win a WS, but they need some offense, and a player pitchers fear late in games. I think DW is more supplementary (good supplementary) than core.

6/120 is better than 7/140.

I also pretty much agree with Agee. Some players are better off going shorter on their first big deal, to have a better shot at a 2nd.

hell, even if he goes 5/100 is done as a player at the end, he still would have made at least 130mill over his career, so it isn’t like he is risking not having enough to retire on if he only signs a 5 year deal!

can also do something creative. 5 guaranteed, 2 vesting? An opt-out after 4? There are plenty of ways to work around issues to get a deal done.

I strongly believe that 5/100 is in both parties best interest. The Mets in lowering future commitments and Reyes in hitting FA again in 2017 as a 33 year old. Who knows what the going rate for a 33 year old SS with Reyes skill set could command in a three year deal in 2017 dollars. Could be 20 M (no loss), could be 30 M (10 M gain), could only be 10 M (10 M loss) and that’s just for 2017. 2018 and ’19 would be higher too as a one year younger player.

With 100 M guaranteed (plus a no trade, no arb if type A) He could wind up getting 3/90 in his second dip at free agency. As a 34 year old (if he got 6 this time around) he might only get 2/50 in 2018 so the extra year actually costs him money.

With so much already guaranteed he can take a chance on busting the bank again in five years. Bet on himself to remain at the top of his game.

SS’s are in high demand and the supply doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Almost every SS in anyone’s system right now are almost all considered to be 3B, 2B, OFers or can’t hit. I don’t doubt Reyes ability to play SS in 2017 at an at least average level one bit. I don’t think he’ll be as fast but the combination of his gap power and quickness, hands and glove will still be better than most.

Basically what is he risking? Barring falling off a cliff production wise or an injury riddled 5 years he’ll easily get 10 M in 2017 (Beltre did in 2010) so he’s betting 10 M to win perhaps 30 M a year for 3 years.

I’d go 5/100, NT clause, no arb if he’s a type A and see if he agrees with the premise.

Everything goes up over time and with the economy so low right now you have to believe what is market price today won’t be close in 5 years.

6 years and 120 million sounds about right. He could certainly get more elsewhere.
