The Beltran Appreciation Week posts were anything our authors wanted to submit centered around Beltran. We had about 15 posts not including mine which will cap off the week later today.

As to the point of your comment, this was an info-post showing how effective Beltran has been in the NL East, I researched it, dropped my data it in a spreadsheet, added some color, and shared it.

You're making it sound like there were 10 or 5 or even one other post lamenting Beltran's potential bat in avoiding a Mets loss. There weren't any others, just this one so I don't know why you grew so tired of them? You might be referring to another Mets fan site, but certainly not this one.

To your point that Beltran was selfish because he followed the money, don't we all? Does anyone who wants the best salary for himself and his family now fall into the selfish category?

I won't even comment on the ridiculousness of bringing up the Walter Reed incident, other than every year there are 2-3 Mets who do not attend including two of Alderson acquisitions this year.

That said, none of the others who missed this trip spent hundreds of thousands of their own dollars to help make children's lives better in his hometown in Puerto Rico where his life's greatest achievement now stands - a brand new school to replace the one that was falling apart and couldn't fit all the students that wanted to learn. That event had been scheduled months earlier before the Walter Reed event which was only announced 3 days prior by the Mets.

Furthermore, Beltran attended a Veterans Hospital that offseason ON HIS OWN prior to that voluntary team visit, and he went with Fred Wilpon himself. This is common knowledge to those who cared enough to look it up.

>>>Beltran, who seemed unhappy it had become a topic of conversation around the team, said he had a meeting concerning another charitable endeavor - the high school his foundation is building in his native Puerto Rico, a long-held goal of Beltran's.

"I don't know who's creating this issue, but this offseason, I went to visit the Veterans Hospital in New York, so it's not like I'm against it," Beltran said. "Actually, I went with Fred Wilpon.<<<

He also attended all the other team visits to Walter Reed in prior years as well as this year.

Go tell all those children living below the poverty level without a decent school to learn in that Beltran only cares about himself.

Go tell all the homeless people who were served Thanksgiving dinner in NY by Carlos Beltran in 2006 and 2007 that he cares only about himself while all of us stuffed our faces in front of our plasma TVs watching football games.

Go tell all the starving families who showed up last December where Beltran flew in from Puerto Rico to help deliver 20,000 pounds of food and was praised by Mayor Bloomberg for his charitable efforts for the city of New York, while all of us were standing in lines at Best Buy or at the mall doing last minute Christmas shopping.

Go tell all the young players in Puerto Rico that previously only played baseball in dirt fields and garbage dumps and now have a beautiful baseball academy that Carlos Beltran helped build that he only cares about himself.

I've had to defend Beltran like this once before against Greg Pomes, but never thought I'd have to do it again.

Okay, back to my Carlos Beltran post.

Look I never wrote a bad word about him. I don't mind him, but I'm not gonna pretend I think he cared about playing for the Mets. You can take it all the back to when Julio Franco had to tell him to go out when the fans were cheering for him. Why? Because he didn't like being booed? Even though he deserved to be booed for his play.

To say he isn't selfish when he took more $ to come to the Mets than he did for other teams with a better chance to win is a stretch.

BUT with that said, that isn't the point here. The point is, appreciate yes but if after every game we start saying "we needed carlos" its gonna get old. If the Mets blow a save somebody will say we needed KRod... its time to move on

Kelly:

The Beltran Appreciation blogs as far as I understood it were writing things like, looking back on his career as a Met.

Not looking back on a trade and because the Mets lost we say "we could have used Beltran."

We could have used a lot of players last night to beat the Nats.

Look I never really had a problem with Beltran but make no mistake about why he came to play for the Mets. It was money. All money. He didn't even want to come here, he wanted to be a Yankee.

You know when I was over Beltran? The day he didn't visit Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital. That was the point where I decided he didn't care about anybody else except himself. Fair or not, that's what I felt.

Columns looking back on his history with the Mets are fine (moments, records, review of his time here etc)... but if after each loss we're going to look back and say we needed Beltran there, that takes it a bit far in my view.

Carlos Beltran is not selfish. He didnt visit the hospital because he was at a previously scheduled engagement with his own charity, not because he didn't feel like attending or honoring wounded soldiers.

But whatever, that's your choice to feel however you want.

Yea time to move on. He was a 34 year old free agent on a team that is a longshot to make the playoffs. They got a legitimate pitching prospect for him.

Or I could answer with "Beltran has gotten 1 hit since the trade" but thats not fair either

Yes. Didn't you know that he averaged 4 RBIs a game against the Nationals. Silly idea for a column. But it is a free country. Of course, he would also have driven in 4 in the game Duda did. Projection is a waste of time.
