Jose is who Jose is and he still has plenty of year left to contribute his style of baseball whether it is here or elsewhere but sometimes, not talking about Werth type deals, you have to give a year here and there at end when you don’t expect the same play cause of age but it is still part of game and no one will ever see a deal done, stats, moneyball, saber ball, what ever that will give player exactly what he deserves to the year, just isn’t happening today.

Come on! Tell me, PLEASE tell me you understand that my list is based on players in a more realistic time period than Tris Speaker when comparing to Jose Reyes. Tell me you don’t HONESTLY think Speaker, Hornsby, Collins, Wagner or Cobb are fair comparisons to Reyes. Even Mays and Brock are stretches.

You don’t compare a player in 2011 to a player who’s prime years were in the 1960′s when you’re trying to predict their future. It’s unrealistic.

George Brett never stole more than 25 bases in a season.

Brett Butler is fine, if you want to argue Reyes’ value is as a singles hitter as he gets older, great. But I think the players I named were much more generous to Reyes

Jose is not just a regional star cause when he came up and had those great early years and made all stars teams despite being a “regional” star so I disagree.

Tulo, media darling, has been built up by media plus he is well spoken and talks to media always but Jose is not an “out there” type person but he will talk when requested, he lets his play define who he is.

I am hurt about this, more so than David and Ike’s injuries but I am so tired of the “I told you so’s” out there who never cared for Jose’s being who he is and just waited for the first injury to justify their not wanting him here regardless of the price, just saying.

Not having him during the Philly series will be big cause he loves to hit their but kudos to Terry and SA AND Jose for not messing around like last time in LA when he got hurt.

This team of “Buffalo Players” has scratched and clawed so it is up to them and Pelf, Niese, Gee, R.A. and Capuano to try and stay away from big innings to give team a chance to win.
I hope that Capuano is not pitching in Philly cause he is around the plate a lot and he gives up lots of fly balls and HR.

I’ve said that Tulo is a bigger star in the sport than Jose Reyes nationally. Reyes is a regional star who has never really performed on a big stage recently.

Ever hear of Tris Speaker, Rogers Hornsby, or Eddie Collins? No? How about Honus Wagner or Ty Cobb?

All have over 100 career triples and 100 sb’s all played over 2200 games. All are in the Hall. All except for Hornsby had more than 400 sb’s.

If you’re looking for more current, how about Willie Wilson, Lou Brock, Willie Mays, Vada Pinson, George Brett, Robin Yount, Brett Butler, Steve Finley just to name a few. There are many many more.

All of those people who tried telling me Reyes’ leg problems were behind him… now what?

2003 Sprained ankle, 2004 Strained Hamstring, 2004 Back problem, 2009 calf injury, then a rehab injury which lead to a tear, torn right hamstring, hyperactive thyroid, and now this.

Look, I love watching him and in a perfect world the Mets would have won a World Series by now and extending him would have been a no brainer. But the facts are the facts. The writing is on the wall.

A player at age 28 does not suddenly get healthier, specifically when they use their legs as their primary tool. You can show me maybe 2 players: Joe Morgan and Paul Molitor who were high triples, and high SB guys who had great success later in their career.

There’s nothing wrong with Reyes being like a Tim Raines in the later years. Nothing. But is it going to help the Mets win in the future or just make half of an angry fan base feel like they won something?

Offer him a contract that is reasonable, when he turns it down and signs a ridiculous contract with somebody like Seattle… say best of luck, let him take out a newspaper ad “thanking” us, and let Alderson get his 2 picks and move on.

Enjoy 2011 for what it is, and hope Reyes gives the Mets 1 final thrill in September.
