Rookie League Update:
Despite the fact that they have lost five of their last six, and they are spiraling downward in the standings, the Kingsport Mets of the rookie level Appalachian League, have some positives to consider too. Their problem seems to be pitching, because they have six position players off to very promising starts. A couple of these guys could emerge next year as legitimate prospects. In order of OPS %:
Cam Maron, C, 6’1″ 175, B:L T:R, 34th rd draft pick in 2009 out of Hicksville HS, in NY.
AB 50, R 11, H 18, AVG .360, 2B 1, HR 1, RBI 4, OBP .508, SLG .440, OPS .948, K 15, BB 14, SB 1
Kid needs to work on his receiving skills, but his natural hitting ability is off the charts.
Greg Pron, OF, 6’6″ 195, B:R T:R, 42nd rd draft pick in 2011 out of W. Florida.
AB 58, R 13, H 20, AVG .345, 2B 5, 3B 1, HR 1, RBI 6, OBP .403, SLG .517, OPS .920, K 10, BB 6, SB 4
CS 1
Don’t know much about this bean pole, it will be interesting to see if he has some pop.
Jeff Glenn, C, 6’3″ 185, B:R T:R, 9th rd draft pick in 2009 out of Winter Haven Florida (HS).
AB 47, R 8, H 14, AVG .298, 2B 7, HR 2, RBI 10, OBP .333, SLG .574, OPS .908, K 15, BB 3
An athletic defender behind the plate, if his bat develops, he could be a complete catcher.
Julio Concepcion, LF, 6’4″ 194, B:R T:R, signed as an IFA in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic.
AB 72, R 9, H 25, AVG .347, 2B 2, 3B 2, HR 1, RBI 8, OBP .377, SLG .472, OPS .849, K 10, BB 3
After putting together good back-to-back seasons in the GCL, it’s good to see him off to a fast start in Kingsport.
Tillman Pugh, OF, 6’0″ 190, B:R T:R, 15th rd draft pick in 2010, out of Sonoma State U.
AB 56, R 9, H 15, AVG .268, 2B 1, 3B 1, HR 3, RBI 10, OBP .339, SLG .482, OPS .821, K 13, BB 6, SB 3
This guy is one of my personal faves that I have been keeping an eye on. A very interesting combination of speed, power and athleticism, make Pugh a high ceiling guy who is taylor made for the expansive outfield at Citi.
Dustin Lawley, OF, 6’1″ 195, B:R T:R, 19th rd draft pick in 2011 out of Wallace State CC.
AB 71, R 8, H 19, AVG .268, 2B 5, 3B 1, HR 2, RBI 17, OBP .299, SLG .451, OPS .749, K 15, BB 4
Leads the team in RBI’s, needs to cut down on his strikeouts.
There is one pitcher who deserves to be mentioned for his solid start out of the Kingsport bullpen.
Ernesto Yanez, RP, 6’0″ 162, B:R T:R, signed as an IFA in 2009, out of Venezuela.
G 7, IP 15.0, W-L 1-0, ERA .000, H 15, K 12, BB 2 SV 1
