Mets Contact Boras; Would Consider Bringing Beltran Back In 2012

I loved this column from Bob Klapisch of The Record, where he sums up the sentiments and feelings of Carlos Beltran’s final moments at Citi Field in a Mets uniform.
If anyone imagined an emotional send-off for Beltran, this wasn’t even close: The ovation from the Citi Field crowd was polite, but uninspired, lasting only a few seconds as Beltran disappeared into the dugout. Everyone was too hot, too miserable, too lethargic watching the Mets sleepwalk through a 6-2 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday afternoon.
Besides, how many Mets fans ever felt strongly enough about Beltran to get worked up now – on his way to the Braves, Phillies or Red Sox in the next 10 days? Beltran was respected in New York but never loved, never truly forgiven for looking at strike three in Game 7 of the 2006 NL Championship Series.
Pity, too: Beltran will leave town as the franchise’s most under-appreciated superstar, even though the combination of offense and defense in his Met prime arguably was better than Darryl Strawberry’s, David Wright’s and even Mike Piazza’s.
It was also nice to hear that Beltran would entertain the possibility of returning to the Mets next season if the Mets decide to bring him back. It was the Mets themselves that posed the possibility to his agent Scott Boras. David Waldstein of the New York Times, explains:
Although the team is intent on trading Beltran, who is in the final year of his contract, before the July 31 non waiver trade deadline, they are also considering the possibility of trying to sign him again as a free agent after the season.
According to two people in baseball familiar with the situation, the team contacted Scott Boras, Beltran’s agent, and asked if he would be amenable to that notion. They were informed that Beltran would be willing to consider the idea of re-signing with the Mets in the off-season, even if he is traded in the coming days.
Nothing would make me happier than to have Beltran back in the fold in 2012. Obviously he would be compensated accordingly and the deal would probably only include two guaranteed years at most, but how incredible would that be?
Trading Beltran for a couple of legit prospects, and then having him back at a discounted cost on top of that. Give GM Sandy Alderson the ”Executive of the Year” award if that happens.

LMAO!!!! good luck waiting on that!!!
Jealous, much? All your ravings about trading Beltran would simply go up in a puff of smoke if Alderson bought him back and fleeced a couple of prospects out of the rival Phillies or Braves in the process huh? That may be too much for your brain to handle, huh?
i will actually give that man the award myself!!! and pay for a whole week vacation in puerto plata.. lmao!!! are you kidding me?? did you guys see what he got san diego last time he was GM????? keep drinking that man kool aid
When Alderson was in SD, Kevin Towers was the GM there. Alderson was never GM in SD.
Dano:
alderson was the head in charge wasn’t he?? keep drinking the kool aid he’s serving, might be surprise is not actually kool aid but the store brand that’s even cheaper!!
No, he was not “head in charge.” Wouldn’t that be the owner?
Jeff Wilpon is the CEO of the Mets and despite the whining about meddling, he is no more responsible for the failures or successes of the team than is Mr. Met.
Alderson was the CEO of the Padres and that is not the same thing as being GM. Towers was the GM then. He was responsible for the day to day personnel decisions. Not Alderson.
You should be PRAYING it happens Alex because then it would be easier to trade away your nemesis, you know the guy you hate anddisgust over?
I can’t see Carlos resigning here under any circumstances but of course Borass wants everyone in, even if there not.
like the “Borass”
Agree with you, maxxing contract is all “Borass” is thinking about. How many of his players actually take less to stay or go to the team they “want”.
What is meant here by “discounted” I don’t know. Down from 17 mil? This is a FA with a bad knee moving into his mid thirties. I would not sign him, except as a late sign and for one year onoy, if necessity called for it. We should have a rule about FA’s in their 30′s.
I would love to think Beltran will continue being a 30/100 hitter for 2012 and 2013, in addition to patrolling the grasslands with speedy and brilliant prowess, but how confident should any of us be about this?
Productivity rarely increases or even remains stable as players head into mid-30s.
On another note, I have tired of all the chatter about how popular or unpopular he is/isn’t with the fans. Simply put, the man doesn’t seek attention, and isn’t very emotional, charged up etc. He also doesn’t act like a rah-rah team leader.
What he is is a terrific ballplayer who will be remembered as one of the best Mets.
I will miss him, but like many other of you, I am ready to move on.
I only wish CB and his family all good things.
Me too.
Carlos has not only been the best position player we have ever had wear the Met uniform, he has also been the classiest professional to wear it as well even in the face of being embarrased by his own organization repeatedly and by fans who remember just one AB out of many.
I have no gripes about what Beltran has been. I do have concerns about what he will be. We have brought in too many guys who were just a little too far along in their careers (Bay is just one of them). It is not always easy to tell when the end will come, but why tempt fate? Look for something younger.
Though I can never really forget that infamous curveball in ’06, Beltran has been the most consistent player on the Mets over the years- WHEN he actually does play. I would love to see Beltran back next year and continue to be the quiet leader he has been. Of course it would be a very stipulated contract, which is probably is going to be the only offers he gets from any team.
Well I did say that now that Picards suit has dropped the firesale might be called off.
I think it would make for some smart baseball if they could trade Veltran for the next two months and resign him in FA.
The problem will be if we trade him to a contender and he wins a WS no matter what he says now he will likely stay with the guys he got his ring with!
The chance to win a World Series is the biggest criteria for a free agent of Beltran’s status. Organizational credability. That’s why the NYY always resign the guys they want. That’s why they get the Sabathia’s, Tex’s and A-Rods. Guys WANT to go there. It wasn’t always that way with them though. Players use to use them during the years they were in full buffoon mode.
Money talks pretty loudly but among those who will have multiple World Series contenders fighting over them the chance to win speaks the loudest.
Keith Hernandez himself talked about how Cashen told him about the Gooden’s, Darlings and Dykstras down on the farm and that was a big reason why he signed here.
No one’s bringing up Val Pascucci Dylan Owen and Raul Chavez as reasons why guys should sign here.
No, but I’ll bet they mention Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia, Matt Harvey, and Wilmer Flores. In a couple of years, we have a good chance of having a completely homegrown quality rotation, and that’s if we trade Pelfrey. With Flores’ power hitting (and who should be moved to second or third if we resign Reyes!) we will have a very competitive team in a couple of years, all homegrown!
