Outstanding piece Ed. Very heart warming and a reminder that baseball players are human beings as well. I am happy that Beltran is going to a team that has a chance to win the World Series and beat the Phillies on the way. A World Series ring would be a perfect addition for a man who has won numerous awards on and off the field and has been an outstanding contributor to the game of baseball everywhere he has gone. My 3 favorite Beltran moments are: Hitting a walk off home run off of Jason Isringhausen in 2006 to beat the Cardinals 9-8. Gary Cohens home run call was Phenomenal. His first home run as a Met off of John Smoltz to beat the Braves and end the Mets’ 5 game losing streak to start the 2005 season. And finally, his catch on Tal’s hill in Houston to keep the Astros from winning that game. I wish him nothing but the best!

I on the other hand, want the Mets to win a World Championship. Humanitarian contributions are great for karma but don’t equal rings. One more piece of the 2006 failure gone, a year that so many of you put on such a false pedestal. With Reyes going free agent in a matter months we can finally work on letting these kids play through a whole season (barring injuries) in 2012 so that MGMT can focus on acquiring some real MLB pitching.

A Big Thank You to Carlos Beltran for being a Met. A class individual. Los Mets started with Carlos and it ends with him as well. Thank you for the great memories you provided.

Great article Ed, I remember watching on TV when Clemente got that hit off of Matlack and remember the loss when he dies doing humanitarian work for others.

Carlos is a player that does not advertise what he does, his faith guides him, gives him strength and allows him to deal with times like the “looking 3rd strike” though other chances Mets had in that game are never mentioned, he is the ultimate professional and a man that gives of his time, money and talents because he want to and not because the team has set up some publicity appearances for him.

I will miss him as he glides on the bases and running down the ball in CF plus the fact that he was a team mate that never made comments about other team mates and always went out of his way to help the younger players w/o any fanfare or demand from others.

He will always be the player I wished I had seen more of because his injuries deprived many NY fans from really enjoying what Carlos Beltran is, was and will always be; a professional, caring person.

Beautiful article for a wonderful man. “That’s Carlos Beltran’s way.” This is why I get so upset when I see a fan call him selfish. Carlos is the least selfish person in the league.

I love the story of how he built his parents a house and the story of how he met his wife. He is an amazingly caring and giving person to so many.

As you (and most MMO readers) know, I am a huge Beltran fan. Of course I love his gorgeous smile, but more than that I love his generous spirit. So many children have benefited from Beltran’s kindness. I just wish there were more people like him around. This world would be such a better place if more celebrities/sports stars had the same heart and selflessness.

I will always be a one of his biggest fans, whether he’s in a NY Mets uniform or not.

Yes, your uncle is a wise man – must be where you get it, Ed!

Tremendous article Ed. Really sincere, heartfelt and extremely well written.

Superstars who are also elite humans are a rare breed. Carlos has had many opportunities to fire back at his detractors, especially the way the Organization and owner have mistreated him but he just has too much class. Way too much to be tainted by the results of just one AB out of 3500 with the Mets.

We’ve been blessed to get a chance to see one of the greatest CFers in baseball history over the last 7 years and I wish he had been treated with the respect he has earned. All the Best Carlos.

My family being from Manati I have enjoyed watching Carlos Beltran along with the Jose Valentin who is also from Manati play with the Mets.

The academy you wrote about that is in Florida P.R. was definite something Beltran felt passionate about and took a lot of pride in doing.

I remember when they finally announced they were going to break ground seeing the clip in the news of him being emotionally affected as he discussed how he felt in what he was doing.

As a fan can you imagine if the greatest ballplayers of Puerto Rican heritage were all in their prime and played on the same team. Could they beat the 28 Yankees-maybe? The same musings could be made for the old Negro League players. Interesting if all the stats were programmed into a computer to see what the outcome would be. Boy, just think of the fantasy team possibilities.

Thanks for the insightful story on a humble man who happens to be a great ballplayer — Carlos Beltran. Your portrayal of Carlos’ home in Puerto Rico was touching. We all come from different backgrounds and different cities, towns and countries. Exploring Carlos’ origins made me — the son of parents born in Rathdowney, Ireland — proud of the uniqueness of each of us.
