While I don't doubt that being in a walk year brings out the focus in a player due to natural money motivation. I'm quite skeptical that a player can turn it on to the extent that his numbers are so different as if he was holding something back before.

Beltre's first walk year came during his athletic prime, and he played like it. It was also during the steroid era, and it’s my own personal opinion that it was a lil suspect. However whats not debatable is that the Mariners were a terribly constructed team during Beltre's tenure, and he didn't have great lineup protection. Then he goes to the much better BoSox, and ta-da! he plays better as well. Now on Texas he's having a darn good year, without the $ to motivate.

Beltran is simply playing like the borderline Hall of Famer he's been his whole career. He lost 2 seasons to a tough injury, and only the cancerous and judgmental New York media and fan scene made him to be some washed up bum. People get hurt playing sports, it happens. He took time (away from the Mets heinous medical staff) to heal and now he's an All Star leading our team again, and to boot made no fuss about a sensible position switch.

Reyes is 28, and while injuries will always be a specter hanging over him, he too has an 8 year career opening arc that projects to the HoF. It’s not surprising that when he's healthy he's a devastating force every time he steps in the box. He's in a prime age year and it should be expected that he have one of if not his best season right now. And clearly the current injury puts to bed the ridiculous notion that he somehow "wasn't gettin hurt in a walk year."

The sad part is despite having these two great baseball players; our club hasn't been able to ascend to a championship level. But I still hold out hope. Let's Go Mets!

I think Beltran is an honest player striving to come back from serious injury. Sure he has something to prove, but it is more a case of pride of performance. Beltran is a true gentleman of the sport, and while I do not want them to risk re-signing him, I appreciate what he has done here. I think Reyes is finally showing the improvement that was absent up to this point when he was pretty much allowed to do as he pleased by our Klown Koaching staff of the past few years. Thepresent staff is actually teaching him things and he is responding to it. Under Jerry, he was left to his tools, with the coaches figuring the good would outweigh the bad, and that he was pretty much what he was. It also gave Reyes a bad name, as a guy that was hard to coach. I think it is pretty clear from his hitting approach that he is listening to Hudgens, since the entire team is trying to hit the same way. Also, I never heard Jose say once that he loved playing for Jerry. He has said that about Terry numerous times. No, Jose was never a dog. A dum dum, a slow healer, yes. But he always played hard. Now he is playing smarter and better. He hardly ever strikes out, he uses the whole field, and he is even more selective in clutch situations. Guys who turn it up in contract years usually increase their energy and their effort. Reyes has never had a need to do that.

he's had season with over 200 hits before, and many triples, he's 28 and peak at the right time, rememeber 2006? beltran had turned 28 too and what does he do? 41 HR's and 116 rbi's. same with rollins who at 28 was the MVP, some player have good years when young, but as they get older they become even BETTER, then slowed down with time, but great talent trumps anything else man.. reyes is the answer for our future..

I'll give you Beltran only because he has performed like this in the past, but Reyes never had stats like this before. Frankly, I dont know what youre talking about. When did Reyes ever bat .357??? Answer: NEVER! Reyes was a career .280 hitter before this season that some are choosing to call a typical Jose Reyes season.

xtree-mi-con, you just mad because your boy toy is hurt and you obviously don't have anything to gush about. go buy a popsicle to suck on!!!!
from 2005-2008 once again, look at the whole body of work, these 2 were producing offensively AND defensively, got us to the playoffs that 1 year and had not been for our clueless GM and even more clueless manager, we would've been singing a different tune trust me, not wright, nor johnson, nor straw, had been as good as players as reyes and beltran, we all saw who wright became when he was left to lead the team, and we all know who he is under pressure, these 2 are carrying the mets, w/o reyes this team would be 20 games below 500 mark it, you ppl are so bias it make that article that martino wrote about mets fans being racis-t true. we under appreciate beltran and reyes, and wanna down what their doing, yet we praise and love jason bay (even though he's batting crap and forgot how to hit HR's) because he hustles to first base and is a pro. yet, reyes got hurt hustling a base hit and he's injury prone, he's soft..
nobody has said anything about davis being soft, he had the same jeter injury, yet jeter is back in 2 weeks, davis is STILL out and nobody calls him soft, if it was beltran, i'm sure ppl would've said he's dogging it, diva, he's garbage, what a soft player, got no heart.. mets fans making comments and article like this makes me wanna puke, funny how he mention beltre, but why not JASON BAY, who had a career year the year he was a free agent, got paid, and now he SUCKS with the mets??? no beltre, is more fitting right????

kevin, so beltran and reyes HAD never before this year put up those numbers??? a man named beltran in his career with the mets has been THE BEST CF IN METS HISTORY, and reyes is arguably THE BEST PLAYER IN METS HISTORY please look it up,yes some players achiev, but would the writer of this article would've said the same thing about albert pujols if he was having a monstrous year??
just because they're mets they get this article out, but forgot what those 2 have done for this franchiZe in years past, is a shame we'd be stuck with crap in the OF because the mets owner are broke and can't afford to pay attention, beltran had an injure 2009-2010 season, reyes had a bad 2009-2010 as well, but look at the numbers and tell me if you truly believe these 2 are having career year based on contract only and that the numbers they're putting up is a product of beltran being really good and reyes peaking (he's 28) at the right time, with the help of hudgens the hitting coach.

When your boss sends you the message, "we're not sure if we want you anymore", isn't it human nature to try and prove how valuable you are? And it would be "a big mistake if you let me go?" Not sure I agree with the idea of "tanking" it to prolong a career though. You might try to avoid a collision at home plate or second base, but you aren't going to try less. The spirit of competition is a powerful motivator. And remember guys like Reyes and Beltran get paid extra $$ for making the all-star team. What is completely mystifying to me is to see players like Miguel Cabrera, and Victor Martinez, who don't even run out ground balls. Those guys, and any other players like that are an absolute disgrace to baseball and shouldn't even be given an opportunity to play the game. I don't care how talented a player is, they should not be permitted to devalue, detract from the game like that.
