Original, I understand your sentiment. If u have any thoughts that Beltran would be amenable to staying on at a reduced price, let me remind u his agent is Scott Boras & the next time he cuts a client’s price will be his first to my recollection, Scott Boras defines reasonable compromise as “doing it his way”. I don’t believe gambling on those knees for 1, 2 or 3 yrs @ a minimum of 15M per is a prudently wise decision.

With that said, if u can’t keep him u should attempt to acquire at least a niminal return in the form of future usable winning piece(s). I certaibnly wouldn’t presume we’d receive no useful parts for today’s or tomorrow’s campaigns. It’s likely important to remember that at last year’d deadline Dillon Gee was ranked as a ‘B’ type prospect. Every team has their ‘sleepers’ at that classification. it’s Dipodesta’s job to root them out for times like these.

Jdon, I heard yesterday the Phillies are rumored to be sniffing around Hunter Pence as a plan B to Beltran and Astros demands are more tolerable than ours. I’d suspect they aren’t the only team with that as plan B.
It got me thinking that Pence + possibly a mid-B prospect wouldn’t be a terrible return for Beltran. Thinking of it from a PHL perspective, it’s very agreeable in as much as they’d ultimately acquire Beltran for less than Brown as well as depriving their 2 biggest competitive concerns ATL & SF both Pan A(Beltran) as well as Plan B(Pence)
I’d imagine Phl may find a deal condstructed as Pence for a couple of expendable prospects turned into a Pence+ a midB prospect for Beltran + cash to negate luxury tax component of acquisition very tolerable
The only negative I see is Pence’s current arbi awarded salary of 6.9M; but @ age 28 he’d be perfect as an addition to Reyes & Wright as key components just entering THEIR PRIME.
What box?
NB due to Boras’ track record of moving clients off their last roster, this would serve our ends by constraining Beltran’s PHL days to just 2 mos.

Now the idiot Heyman says that the availability of Colby Rasmus will make the price for Beltran go down. Whoever is trading for Beltran wants to win NOW. Would they really prefer an underachiever like Rasmus for a stretch run. or a proven stretch run performer like Beltran.

Didn’t the President summon Harry Reid and John Boehner to the White House Sunday to discuss the Carlos Beltran trade rumors? Now someone tells me it was about some insignifcant thing about paying off some money we owe. What gives-I tell you this country better get its priorities straight or we’re in big trouble!

I agree the press has been speculating on this just for the sake of hearing themselves
think on the subject. The talk at this point is simply aimed at putting people off on trade intentions and no one in the media has an inside track.

However, I like the fact that Alderson is smart enough to figure out that the Mets need Beltran, and possibly not dealing him wouldn’t be a bad thing. No one who they get will help them this year. No one who they get will help them next year. Beltran contributes every game. And he will if re-signed. They will never improve themselves by trading or losing him, so keeping him seems the best option to me.

Dutch, the reason for trading him simply is to negate your very last sentuiment; “Especially if you are not getting anything in return”

Thanks to Phillips’ disbelief in development as a building component & the Wilpons’ Phillips advised dedication to “Slots” along with Minaya’s need for headline signings costing firstrounders the vast majority of our most likely to contributes are @ an “A” level program. We need ‘late & close’ potential difference makers after promoting so much of the cream already. While, we fans pay for patience with our frustrations, our highly leveraged ownership is teetering percuipitously needing turnstyles to move above crawl level to survive.

I hope that answers your WHY; however, I’d advise u to only listen to guesses from the touts that had K-Rod going to Brews.

I agree on the Mets being in the process of lowering their payroll: Ollie, Castro, K-R were all moves were money played a roll. Somehow I don’t see it here. Front office seems to be willing to swallow the remainder of his contract AND get rid of him. Well if no one wants him, no one is going to give away the depth to the Mets. Paying to see him slug against you (ico Braves or Phillies) and not even get anything decent to add to your system does not make sense. I hope they can broaden their prospect lists and build for the future. For now unless one team bows, simply keep Beltran and make a decent year. If Santana can join the rotation maybe they can continue to win more games than they lose as they have been doing since end of April

But are they better off adding youth if those player(s) are no better than what is currently in the farm system? If they’re adding comaparables to Neuiwenhuis, Vaughn, DenDekker, or Martinez then those deals are more about depth rather than quality. And while this team needs depth they also need quality, something they’ve been left completely bereft of by the previous administration. In the end I guess it’s better to add depth than watch Beltran leave as a free agent and get no compensation. But IMO it’s going to be hard to watch Beltran dealt for only a 2nd tier prospect or two although I’ve realized all along they wouldn’t get a Minor, Dom Brown, Reddick, or Cosart type high end prospect.

Good post Joe! It’s one thing for us to speculate and argue about who the Mets might get for Beltran, and who they will not be able to. But to read about it in the papers everyday, and it’s all mindless speculation by guys who know less about our Mets than we do! It’s enough to cause one to wretch. One of the worst rumor mongers out there is Andy Martino of the Daily News, that guy is a perfect example of how clueless some of those writers are.
