Alderson Will Leverage Beltran For Max Return, But Make No Mistake He’s As Good As Gone

Sandy Alderson is working the phones this afternoon about Carlos Beltran. There’s a chance he could be taking more calls than making them.

“Carlos’ situation is well-known, and it’s not surprising given his situation and performance this year that a lot of interest has been expressed,’’ Alderson said. “We have not pursued that interest in great length to this point.’’

As an All-Star, Beltran is probably the premier outfielder and bat in the trade market, so the Mets aren’t completely without leverage.

Where the Mets don’t have leverage, is that Beltran’s contract precludes him from being offered arbitration so they won’t get any compensatory draft picks.

The balance of Beltran’s contract is for roughly $8 million, so the Mets must decide if that’s worth the price to pay to gamble on staying in contention.

Unless the Mets are bowled over, Alderson said he’s willing to ride this out until the trade deadline, and even longer.

While the trade deadline is July 31, the Mets can move Beltran after that in a waiver deal. In that situation, Beltran must clear waivers before he can be traded and given all the interest, that might not happen and the mets may be forced to deal with the claiming team – all too frequently those deals fail to transpire.

SI.Com’s Jon Heyman, believes the Mets will ride this out all the way until the final deadline day on July 31, because Alderson is convinced Beltran will not clear waivers.

Alderson’s stance is actually a good negotiating ploy. Everybody knew the Mets were desperate to deal Rodriguez, but by showing a willingness to wait on Beltran it’s possible he could force some general manager to blink and offer up a better prospect.

The Giants and Red Sox are the teams reported to have the most interest in Beltran. ESPN reported the Tigers might be players for Beltran.

As far as the Yankees, their primary objective is pitching. Even with Alex Rodriguez out for at least a month, the belief is the Yankees still have enough offense.

If the Mets go all out in the trade market, they have several pieces that could prove attractive to a contender, including Chris Capuano, Jason Isringhausen, Tim Byrdak, Scott Hairston and Willie Harris.

All have served a purpose for the Mets this season, but all can be replaced in the winter.

  • SO this is what it comes down to I’ve notice.

Mets injuries? It’s their problem, no excuse and should be punished for it..according to some people here.

Meanwhile we have Extreme icon giving Heyward a pass because he’s hurt….that’s different (yeah okay)

    And also..

That creep jessep has said before the A’s problems this year is because they have a lot of injuries. But as everybody reading my words has noticed that whenever we bring up Mets injuries over the last 3 years that doesn’t count it’s no excuse.

But it’s an excuse for other teams. That’s the new type of fan here.

    • The A’s problem WAS their injuries! When guys like Braden and Anderson, young kids with bright futures, it’s an unfortunate accident that was unexpected. When the myriad of old, injured players the Mets have depended on with absolutely no backups go down, it’s an unfortunate accident that you could have seen coming from frickin SPACE! You see the difference? The A’s bet the farm on young studs with bright futures. The Mets put it all in the hands of guys who just couldn’t stay healthy and had no contingency plan.

      Huge difference.

      • Oh but the Mets last 3 seasons including this year injuries was not a problem

These guys are unbelievable. They make me sick.

        • Who said they weren’t a problem? They’re a huge problem, but a bigger problem than they should be due to lack of depth.

          • Yeah, Murphy, turner, and Tejada, have done a terrible job replacing Ike, Wright, and Reyes. And Gee replacing young too…..what a disatser.

            There’s no depth at all.

            • They’ve done a real good job, better than anyone could have expected. But that’s the problem. These kids play over their heads and the Mets are still .500, all but out of a playoff race. So how good are they? Not good enough.

              • Right, but they won’t be playing much longer because our guys are coming back.

Our starters are good enough, but not our backups.

            • They’ve done an outstanding job filling in. Not replacing. Big difference.

        • But the Mets guys were old, like Ike, Wright, and Reyes

Those guys are old and injuried and we depended on them.

          • Right, let’s just use this one year to pretend the last four never happened. What a joke. Why can’t you your mouseketeers ever see a big picture? Ike and Wright going down was unfortunate, but how come the Cards and Braves didn’t lose or gained ground without Pujols, Freese, Heyward and Chipper? Yet for the Mets, that’s all we can blame this season on.

            • Pujols was only out a few weeks, and Chipper just went on the DL a few days ago. Heyward has also played 69 games, while Ike and Wright both played less than 40 games.

So why didn’t they lose ground? It’s simple, their guys weren’t out as long as our guys were. Our guys were out months, and their guys were only out weeks. Big difference.

  • Don’t sleep on Texas or Atlanta for Carlos. Colorado as a dark horse if they can rip off one of those summer win streaks they are known for.

I think the Mets will have to take some of his salary (at least half) to try and get anything of value. Still, he’s leaving so I don’t see why anybody would not want him traded. He didn’t request a no arbitration contract so that he can re-sign with the Mets.

    • So Colorado who is 10.5 games back can make the playoffs, but the Mets can’t when we are 7.5 behind?

      • Unbelievable,

And oh, I got flack for posting that Jason Heyward is hitting .226 with 9 HRs and only 22 RBIs in about 230 ABs for the mighty ATL lineup.

Some people were VERY upset and needed to feel that they had to remind me how many games the Mets were behind the Braves in the standings.

Anyway back to the subject. So Colorado is a dark house at 10.5 games behind huh? But the Mets are out of it?

This is what makes me sick lately around here.

        • You used the wrong standings, too.

      • You used the wrong standings. The Rocks are 8.5 out of the division behind teams that don’t scare anyone in the regular season (pitching makes SF a beast in the playoffs). The Mets are 11 games out of the division behind teams better than they are and the Wild Card leader is one of those teams. The Rocks have an outside shot at the division, not the Wild Card.

        • Ohhhhhhhh So now the Rockies are 8.5 in a division that doesn’t scare anyone. Ohhhhh.

But the Mets are 2.5 out of 2nd place for the Wild Card and the Braves are missing Chipper Jones and Heyward is hitting .226.

But the Mets Get nooooooooooooooooo support and have no chance here. Nice.

          • Since when has the NL West been a scary division? Did I miss something? And as far as missing Chipper…….you were pretty confident missing Pujols was gonna derail the Cardinals. How’d that work out for you?

And who cares what Heyward’s batting average is? He’s a stud and you know it. But let’s tell everyone about his batting average. His season has been marred by injury, but that’s a fault of his, whereas the 9 million Mets to hit the DL is just bad luck. Right?

            • Ohhhhhh so NEVER mind that Heyward isn’t hitting. He’s a stud

But Bay is a bum right? But HEY Heyward is can’t miss and will GUARANTEE TO BE A STUD

Ohhhhhhhhhhh so now the excuse is Heyward’s injuries..OHHHHHHHHHH!

But the last 3 years the Mets injuries…that doesn’ count right? The Mets injuries are somebody’s fault and has had NO BEARING on their ability to compete right?

BUT the Braves INJURIES DO MATTER. Yeah okay

You are a PHONEY BS ARTIST. Your word around this site should mean NOTHING because you talk about of BOTH SIDES of your mouth and anything you say should not be taken seriously by ANYBODY who visits this site.

              • YOU made the injury excuse, not me! You degrade Heyward, who is better than any player the Mets have developed in years with the possible exception of Reyes. But Heyward has been marred by injuries this year. But when the Mets get injured, it’s just bad luck and they’re still good and yadda yadda yadda.

The injuries are an accident, but the crippling effect they have on the team is the product of Omar’s uselessness as a GM. The Cards lost Pujols for almost three weeks and lost no ground in the standings. The Braves lose Chipper and had Heyward out and GAINED on the Philles and further separated themselves from the Mets.

But the Mets have injuries and WOE IS BAYONNE, WHAT BAD LUCK!! That’s what happens when you bet the farm on old, injury prone players.

                • Oh so now it’s ALREADY been decided that Heyward will be better than Ike Davis.

Why don’t you go root for another team! But i doubt that would matter because you root for a philosophy and not any team in particular. The team is just the outlet for pigs like you.

                  • Ok, I’ll give you Davis. He hasn’t been here in so long, I forgot about him. Davis could be real special, too.

                  • Here’s the real scoop on Heyward. Yes the Braves love him but not as much as you might think. They have been exulting Freddy Freeman their big first baseman as better than Heyward. Freeman has made the Braves drool over
freeman and it is easy to see why. I think a healthy Ike Davis is the equal to Freeman.

        • so they are further behind the division than we are for the wild card. But they can win, and we can’t.

          • Right. Now you got it.

  • So last year we had Davis and Wright and Reyes and we had Bay and Carlos for half a year. We had Dickey who had a good year and Pelf won 15. We had Santana for half a year. We stunk. Even when we were over .500 it was obvious that we were going nowhere. There is something wrong with this team, injuries or no injuries. We were 5-13 with everybody to start the year. We only started playing better when we infused some AAA non-prospects into the lineup. Leave the Front Office alone. They are lancing a boil formerly known as the New York Mets.

  • LET THEM PLAY! LET THEM PLAY! LET THEM PLAY! Let’s wait till at least August before we condemn this team or season. Most of these guys will clear waivers anyways. These guys have played hard enough to keep the Mets in it and they deserve the chance to go the rest of the way. Especially when they are going to be reinforced with the return of Wright, Davis, and Johan Santana by September. This team definitely has shades of 1973 written all over them and Izzy will lead the bullpen charge of “You gotta believe!”.

  • “If the Mets go all out in the trade market, they have several pieces that could prove attractive to a contender, including Chris Capuano, Jason Isringhausen, Tim Byrdak, Scott Hairston and Willie Harris.”

You were hitting on all cylinders, John, until you mentioned Hairston and Harris. But I wish them the best of luck.

  • “Alderson Will Leverage Beltran For Max Return, But Make No Mistake He’s As Good As Gone”

It’s too bad but likely true. Carlos has been a stud for us. He is still terrific.

  • With alot of interest in Carlos Beltran, im pretty sure one of the teams are gonna give the Mets something they can’t refuse.
