Not moot just delayed….

At some point we will need to do something with one of the guys starting now.
Either trade, Pen Conversion or sent down.

I can’t see then sending Gee down after this the guy could be a ROY candidate if he’s still eligible!

By the time Santana gets back who knows what the situation will be hell we could lose another pitcher by then!
No need to look that far ahead until you have to decide.

’62. Not a bad idea. Depends on what he would bring back. One thing about Pelfrey though is you have to be able to replace his innings pitched or your really going to tax your bullpen past it’s breaking point.

Even if Johan were to come back this year you certainly want to give him ever possible chance to be the Johan of old in 2012-2014. If you need him to go more than 5 innings that could easily lead to a set back.

There is also the realistic chance that come August 1st Johan is not ready to pitch at all so at that point what good purpose is served by pushing him to make 5 starts in 2011?

I’d rather keep Dickey and Capuano in the rotation. RA’s going to be in it next year and if Capuano could become a type B free agent gives us a chance to draft a kid with a #40-50 pick in next years supplemental round who at least gives us the chance of having an in house solution for 6-8 years starting in 2015-2017.

If we had been doing that all along we wouldn’t have all these holes to fill every year by kids not yet ready or whoever just so happens to be available.

We should listen to everyone about everyone though, no question.

T, you are forgetting to consider the primary reason to justify dealing a SP from this team, potentially the greater return can be erealized by trading Scott Boras aka Pelfrey off the team’s activer roster. though a move to the pen of either Cappy or RA could be an option as Acosta or Carrasco are demoted once again to accomodate on roster. My vote would reluctanylt put RA in the pen primarily due to Cappy’s worst outings came early out of the pen, either that was due to him being not quite settled in or his not being a good pen fit, I don’t know; but .500 seems too dicey to risk on a hunch. I would deal Boras to get a yr or two respite from him until Harvey’s called up(’13,’14?).

this is only a relevant discussion if all 5 guys are still on the team healthy when Johan comes back.

though that last part should be a giant IF. especially for this year.

so the short ansswer is, none of them, since at best it will be for some tune up work in September most likely.

This blog is pointless and stupid. There is no chance that Santana will return this season. No pitcher has EVER had the surgery he had and came back to throw even one pitch in a big league game. He has already suffered his first major setback, and that will be the first of many. He may never pitch again. Just ask Mark Pryor and Chin Ming Wang.

Cap should be shopped around at the deadline truth be told.

We have been lucky he has not gotten hurt so far and he is pitching well meaning his stock is high right now.

Thats the better solution to the rotation bloat if you ask me.

In fact a good trade might involve getting a decent closer to replace K-Rod.

Johan has 3 more years left after this one. That’s what’s important, not 5 or 6 starts in September. For us to actually WIN the Wild Card we would have to play FOUR GAMES BETTER than SEVEN other teams. That’s completely unrealistic, especially with the leagues worst offensive production from C, 1B and LF, as well as spotty defense from C, 1B and 2B (unless Tejada stays up here)

We are one injury away in the rotation right now from Chris Schwindon so the idea that we should trade starting pitching is ludicrous. Capuano should be given every chance to become a type B (at least) free agent, unless we could get something really good for him at the deadline. I can’t see the NYY going for him because of the bandbox they play in, Boston and Philly too, TB, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, no need. LAA, Seattle, Texas, Cinn or Colorado possible but would any prospects be better than what Capuano could leave behind as a plan B at around #55? Could be but at the cost of rushing a rehabbing Santana the safer move is to get Capuano to plan B status and do everything possible to make sure that Capuano does in fact become a plan B and Santana doesn’t suffer any kind of a set back that would jepordize his 2012-2014.

But I dont see Santana ever coming back. Or if he does make a comeback. It will be sad to watch him try and regain his former glory. Havent they siad that NO pitcher has succesfully ever come back from ashuolder injury like he has

Agreed, gotta be Cap, assuming he is even healthy by then (which is a big “if”). I think you’re overrating his trade value a bit, but he could easily work out of the pen.

Btw, Pelf has pitched 3 strong outings in a row — hasn’t walked a batter — and while he needs to remain consistent, things are looking up. Heck, he’s been more consistent than Niese, so cut the guy some slack.

Woke up today and this was on my mind after reading about David returning soon.

I also see Cap as the logical choice cause unless they trade Pelf then you can’t send him down and he would not be an asset in BP but Cap with his control, change up and ability to pitch to LH or RH is invaluable though he has looked good this year and if not for BP, like R.A., he would have a better record.

Good situation for Met’s to be in but if you trade him then where is depth if Santana gets hurt again or has setback?

Important commodity to have is starting pitching but if Johan is ok then maybe Cap can bring back a decent piece though I love his approach in games.
