Alex, at some point we have to start thinking about every year, not just this one. We’ve spent all most all of our attention, resources, and effort on this year, every year, and what do we have to show for it? Twenty three years, one NL East title, and even that came in a year that the whole NL East sucked, the whole NL in general sucked. LA and SD won only 88 games the whole year, St. Louis only 83, Philly only 85 and they didn’t even get over .500 for good until there were only 6 weeks left in the season. Houston was 82-80. Everyone else was under .500 for the season. That’s a confluence of events that are seen once every twenty years at best.

Even at that we still needed one of our division rivals to furnish us with two of our best players…….for the second time in a decade.

We can’t keep on relying on the generosity of the Florida Marlins to keep us above .500 and be satisfied only winning the NL East only in those years that everyone else sucks.

I am solidly in favor of resigning Jose but we do not have the talent level of other teams systemwide, we cannot subtract what little we have in order to place a wager on yet another longshot.

i’m too busy thinking about this series and playing field manager – i’m just interested in winning these games right now.

the other idiots who commented on my post don’t take a breather from playing GM 24/7 and way too dramatic for my taste right now. The next thing that will happen is i’ll say something like i hope Beltran has a huge series for us and then somebody (u know who) will follow up saying something like this………well if in the last 25 years we drafted this or didn’t let this guy go..

It just gets tiring. I got tiring after the first 121 paragraphs over the last year, now it’s everyday.

Let’s just win some games right now and stay in this thing.

bayonne, i wonder, if the mets sweep the A’s, we’re 38-37, most likely 3 or 3.5 out, and we trade beltran, i’m sure the saberpologist of saber sandy will come out and say “is for the future”.. there’s a no win situation with some ppl here.. for some reason fans are happy and content with “good season” “we reached .500″ to well, we needed to make that trade for the future”.. is amazing to me how some ppl got loser mentality.. why would anyone wanna get rid of the most productive middle of the lineup player we have? so we can watch dwright strike out with the game on the line and wish beltran was here!?? the nerve of some ppl..

I agree. Mets fans who think the yankees are their rival are out of touch. Maybe trading Beltran to NYY will help them realize it. The Mets don’t compete with the Yanks for anything other than a newspaper headline.

Trade Beltran to whoever gives the Mets the best offer, I don’t care who and especially dont care if its NYY

Exactly right Jessep. Most Major League GM’s focus on both at the same time. Take Theo. He grabs guys anywhere from a couple of years to a couple of months before they become free agents and then gets great play out of guys like Victor Martinez, Adrian Beltre, Jason Bay, and Billy Wagner, then lets them go and collects two early round picks to replenish the farm system so he’s not painted into a corner with a guy nearing the end of his shelf life.

This whole idea of acquiring guys to help us win a World Championship has to be replaced with the idea of getting guys who will help us win multiple World Championships.

That means staying away from anyone over 30 who costs a draft choice in FA or anyone over 32 who costs us prospects unless it’s a bonafide certified ace caliber starting pitcher with a fully developed 25 man roster and capable young reserves waiting in AAA for their chance.

I’ll miss Carlos when he’s gone but we need to get value out of him. The deal hasn’t worked out for either side, and I think the sooner he is gone, the sooner we can all move on from the trials and tribulations from the past seven seasons. If it’s the NYY so be it. Keep in mind, they have a history of overpaying for half-year rentals. Especially if it’s a bat and they do need a consistent one in the lineup. It will be a sad day when Beltran is gone, but I’m ready to move forward from this all. I hope they all are too.

Just please no more salary dump deals that land us useless players like Eli Marrero, Chris Carter and Eddie Lora.

This type of situation is exactly where the Wilpon has sabotaged our chances time and time again by opting to spare the bottom line for the auditor only to have blow open the vault later on for a Bay, Alou or Castillo.

Agree completely. Beltran is exactly what the NYY love. Power, OBP, nuetral platoon splits, good defense.

Now what do they have that could help us compete for a NL East title, post season berth or World Championship every year for ten straight seasons?

Austin Romaine a high school catcher taken in the 2nd round in 2007 (one spot after we selected Brent Rustich, pitcher from UCLA) who required an overslot selection to sign with the NYY is currently one of 3 top catching prospects the NYY have and probably would be held back to be included in a trade for starting pitching but you never know.

Beltran would really make that lineup difficult to pitch to.

I also agree. If you think the Yankees are a rival of ours for getting into the postseason, you need to be checked out by a physican.

The trade makes more of a business sense than anything.

The Yankees would be the only team that could afford Beltran’s remaining salary, and we would get decent to good prospects in return.

If other teams want Beltran, the Mets would probably have to pay up to a portion of his salary before teams decide to grab him. I don’t think the Mets are willing to do so.

I rather trade beltran to the yankees than cards or giants, we r competing with the giants and cards, they r the ones we should be concerned with not helping

the Yanks are NOT our primary antagonist, the phillies, braves, and the rest of the national league r more important antagonist than the yanks

If the yanks r desperate enuff to give back top prospects,by all means, the yanks can have him

the yankees do not stand in our way in terms of chances for the postseason as teams like giants and cards do
