If last year was a contract year for Reyes would we be having this conversation? I don't want to lose Reyes but I also don't want to keep him if it means paying a 33 year old with two bad hamstrings 20-25m for two more years. Also while Reyes is electric a bases clearing triple in the second is soon forgotten if the team loses. I may be reaching here but I'd like to see the stats on any player who has scored 2 or more runs over 100 times my guess is all the records will be pretty heavy on the win side

If the Mets are under .500 by say July 15th, its time to entertain serious offers for Jose. I'm sorry but you can't let him walk for 2 picks unless those 2 picks are the best value they can get for him.

He's not signing with the Mets. Sorry, but he won't talk contract? He might as well have said I'm hitting the open market. On the open market, the Mets lose here.

I really think this is a big dance with one side representing Reyes and the other the team. The owner gives an interview ripping Reyes among others, publicly. Cries poverty. Woe is me, my buddy (Madoff) duped me. I'm a nice guy I love baseball, I love Sandy Koufax. Let's all roll our eyes. This is negotiating without negotiating, or at least opening a dialogue. I wouldn't be suprised the next statment that comes out of the organization will amount to the realization that Reyes is worth a Crawford-like deal, not specifically but moving more towards that.

I get your point his value is as high as it ever has been but I disagree to an extent that 2011 Jose Reyes will not play to this level ever again. I agree, players who tend to blow it up in their walk years piss me off. Adrian Beltre comes to mind. I'm sure the Halo fans wish they had the Dodgers Beltre. Reyes however is at that age where he could, I repeat could be beginning his prime. Remember he came up, in my opinion way too soon, by at least a year, so he's on a decent progression.

Look signing anybody to multi year deals comes with risks. Don't you think the Twins realized that when the signed Joe Mauer, and his position is far more daunting than shortstop. they did it though because A: he's a great player and B: he puts asses in the seats. You can't discount that aspect of it. Alderson knows the entertainment impact Reyes brings to the team. There are no easy answers. Risk cannot be avoided at all costs. That kind of thinking only perpetuates more losing, just as throwing money at players (who don't deserve it) does.

Nice post Joe. I read something by Kevin Kernan that was worth repeating:

This YEAR marks the 40th an niversary of the worst trade in Mets history, when they shipped Nolan Ryan to the Angels for Jim Fregosi in 1971. Trading Tom Seaver hurt dearly, but The Franchise already was 32 when he was dealt to the Reds in 1977.

Ryan, though, had another 295 wins and 5,221 strikeouts in his right arm when he was traded at the age of 25. Just like that, a future Hall-of-Famer was gone.

Here we are, 40 years later, and the Mets cannot let history repeat itself and make the same fatal mistake with Jose Reyes.

They cannot let this impact player slip through their fingers and trade him away or let him sign somewhere else as a free agent.

I think you're judging him based on 2009 mostly. I'm concerned about the back injury now. Yes 2009 was a bad year for him no doubt but last year .283 362b 29hr 103rbi .503 slug. Now if one ASSUMES a combo of Justin Turner/Daniel Murphy/Willie Harris can "get us by" then so be it. I'm not taking that bet, sorry.

wright hasn't looked like that hitter in like three years though.he went from a great two strike contact hitter with power to a guy who is bad with 2 strikes and now has lost his eye and contact at the plate, with some power.

Bayonne -

I'm not going to convince you to like Wright there's no point in trying to besides you like who you want. However David Wright is someone who averages, on the low end, .285 30-100 year in and out. Any team would be more than ok with that in spite of his "unclutchness" that he brings. It is what it is Bayonne. Like I said in the article Reyes can get on base all day and just sit there if nobody brings him home. Hence the team concept. Having Wright and Reyes is and has been an awesome combo. Can't you just enjoy it?

Wright is not a franchise player, that's the difference. You can replace Wright with other hitters who may not give you his overall numbers but have more ability to hit in big spots and provide the Mets with timely hitting but it's very difficult to replace Reyes.

Wright is no franchise player. That statement is laughable

Thanks Maniac for clarifying that stat, it's crazy right? He's absolutely a franchise player along with Wright and Santana. They put people in the seats and they're great players to boot. It would be horrible if Reyes bolts. Just picture him wearing a Phillies uni or a Yankees uni hoisting a World Series Trophy. There's no perfect plan but seeing that would be worse in my opinion.

But, remember Met Maniac, that the Mets have Reuben Tejeda and Wilmer Flores waiting in the wings to take over SS!! That's some bargaining chip to throw at Boras, "well, we have Tejeda and Flores so we'll pass on our Franchise leader in SB, RS, 3B, etc., etc." How is this franchise gets stuck with not one, but TWO, morons as owners? First, Grant runs Tom Seaver out of town, now Wilpon is running Jose Reyes out. Hmmmm, could there be another spell of indignity awaiting the Mets come 2012?

I remember watching a game on SNY and Gary Cohen mentioned that the Mets have a staggering record of something like 110 wins to barely 20 losses when Jose Reyes scores at least 2 runs in a game. Forgive me for not recalling the exact figure but it was almost comical in it’s accuracy.

Joe it was 134 wins and 21 losses, but you were right in how staggering a number it was. I also appreciate the fact you referred to Reyes as a franchise player. Too bad others feel so differently on this site.

When Reyes is gone, so will all the excitement and thrills. No more bases clearing triples, no more wreaking havoc on the bases, just a bland group with Wright as the de-facto senior most Met. Oh woe is us.
