Post Game: Gee Holds, Offense Explodes Again, Mets Win 8-5
Dillon Gee pitched around some early inning trouble, and the offense put up enough runs to put the game out of reach as the Mets won the game, 8-5 and the series versus the Rangers
Game Notes
Dillon Gee was effective, if not spectacular in his six innings of work today. He allowed three runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one while allowing one HR. Gee looked to be doomed in the first inning, giving up numerous hits. He settled down and looked very good in the later innings for the most part. He hasn’t shown that good control recently, and thus has been getting hit because he cannot locate.
Four of the bullpen boys came out today. Beato went an clean inning, Byrdak a clean two-thirds, Izzy a clean one-third and K-Rod came out in a game that was five runs ahead and managed to make it only a three run win. K-Rod has consistently looked…bad. It isn’t a matter of pitching himself in and out of trouble now. He is walking batters, giving up extra base hits and being forced into situations. His ineptitude to “close” also hurts some of his trade value.
The offense today existed thanks to major Ranger errors. The first run scored on a wild pitch, the second on an error and the fourth and fifth on a failed “intentional walk”. Its good to see the Mets winning with some timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, but at what point will the lack of any power create problems?
Jason Bay – 0 for 5 with an RBI and a strikeout. 51 K’s in 187 AB’s. Eek.
Daniel Murphy – 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Also, caught stealing. Great to see Daniel put up some hits.
Ronny Paulino – 2 for 4 with two runs. He may not be hitting the lefties for power right now, but he is hitting them. Much more then can be said about..
Scott Hairston – 1 for 5 with a strikeout. Hairston only hit wasn’t hit very hard. How much longer is he the acceptable fifth OF?
Turning Point
Mets second inning after Gee gave up two runs. It just gave Dillon confidence to know he wasn’t going to have to win the game, he just couldn’t give it away.
Game Ball
Jose Reyes – 4 for 5 with three runs, an RBI and an SB. Honestly, he slumps for three games and does this. If thats how long he will slump for, opponents will begin walking Jose.
On Deck
The Mets have off tomorrow, and then will face off against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday in Detroit. R.A. Dickey will toe the rubber against the Tigers Rick Porcello. Game Time is 7:05 P.M.

Good to see the Mets taking advantage of opportunities. Reyes was out at 2nd in the 1st inning and there was the wild pitch. Without those two gifts, Turner not advancing Reyes becaue he couldn’t go the other way and Bay’s dribbler back to the mound would likely have killed the rally. It wasn’t a good way to start the gamne, but then they took full advantage of more miscues in the 2nd and got their runs back.
Glad to see the Mets surprise and take the series in Texas.
Although he was part of the opposition today, for me, it was great watching Endy play again, especially after what he’s been through since we dealt him. I LOVED him during his time here and I’d love to bring him back. I’d take him over Harris anyday.
As far as Gee goes, to me it looked like he had jitters early, which explains why he was hittable in the first inning. The thought of his family & friends all around the park really must’ve weighed on him but I’m glad he somewhat settled down afterwards. From here, he’s gotta regroup, go into the video room, analyze what he’s been doing the last 2 starts and go back to what he’s been doing that has made him consistent for us up to this point. Great job by the pen once again (although K-Rod gave up 2 runs in the 9th).
I loved seeing Endy too. What a great 5th OFer he is. Love to have him back.
He was one of a number of good Venezuelan prospects signed while Harazin was the GM. Fonzy, Escobar, Scutero.
Not all prospects make it but I’ll take a Fonzy or an Endy on my team anyday. Scutero could have at the least been decent enough to save us the 21M on Matsui and the 25 M on Castillo and putting that money else where would have helped out too.
in a competitive sense what started out as a schoolyard fight wound up with the Mets pummeling their foe to the ground. The Mets beat up, out slugged, and out played Texas today and showed they can win a street fight with the best of them.
The Mets simply out played the Rangers and forced their hand the last couple days..time to move on and just keep it going.
not only that but the Rangers hit a lot of hard hit balls today and the Mets defense simply swallowed them up showing they can take a punch with the best of them. Texas hit it hard and we stopped them cold in their tracks. Very impressive series win.
I think it’s fair to say Gee was more lucky than good yesterday. Again, a 4/5 starter needs luck and defense a lot… Texas hit him hard, but Gee had help from his defense, his offense and the umps. Lets not make this start out to be something it wasn’t.
Good series win for sure.
jessePodesta, he didn’t do enough saber metrics for you!!????
what else do you want, after the first inning he hung in there, he battle, he kept the team afloat once gave him the lead and never surrender more than the score we had.. pelfrey came in friday and boom!!! never gave the team a chance..
alex: What does the fact that he need help from umps and some very good defensive plays to keep him out of trouble have to do with sabermetrics?
He was very fortunate that his offense carried him especially with the 4 run 2nd inning.
His last 2 starts he has not looked very good. I’m not sure why arguing that is even worth it? He isn’t Tom Seaver, pretending everything he does is gold is going to leave you a very disappointed person.
All I’m saying is, Gee pitched good enough to win the game but pitched bad enough to lose the game. He was more lucky than good yesterday. He walked more than he K’d. He gave up 8 hits in 6 innings. He is not a strikeout pitcher yet maxed over 100 pitches in just 6 innings.
Sometimes you have to be lucky instead of good. But pretending he wasn’t is a joke
This is why it’s called a Team
I can see why Gee is not using his curve so much since it was better today but I think that only 2 or 3 went for strikes and the others were not close.
I hope it was jitters cause he has shown so much this 1st half that he is not like the Ranger pitcher yesterday, Ogundo, who started 7-0 and is struggling now.
I have to say that this game had me so giddy cause Mets despite no HR have shown that with doubles, triples and singles they can score, nit pick you to death plus take advantage of some calls by the umps today. They were kinda in our favor but I have seen too many games that Mets were hurt by ump calls so we’ll take present any day.
Wow, they just took it to Rangers today, even with Gee struggling they came back and scored after Gee gave up runs plus they did not take pedal off the hitting other than Bay, Hairston and Pagan not contributing the score might have been higher.
Great win for Gee and Mets going into Detroit.
Mets seem to relax more on road than at home, don’t know why but they have to use Citi to their advantage, as Jose is.
Great win, Lets Go Mets!
I like Gee better than Pelfrey. There’s a night and day difference between consistency verses inconsistency. Gee isn’t a flake and is on the mound doing his job!
Tiger, Pelfrey is a more talented version of john maine.. better stuff than maine, same gestures, act, etc.. john maine taller version..
Pelfrey is the most overrated Met. Easily. I like Manny Acosta more than Mike Pelfrey
OVERRATED??? is he even rated!!??
Considering people pretend he’s a #1 or #2 starter. Yes I’d say so
who doeS??? you??!!
I pretend that Pelf is a #1 or #2 type starter? Really?
Alex, JP is correct:
Pelf came to us as a very high draft choice with enormous potential–mid-90s FB, excellent sinker…
This year he was touted as the staff “Ace” in lieu of Santana. Of course, we were skeptical, but a lot of us were thinking, maybe this will be his year to shine after a couple of very good seasons.
Unfortunately, despite his being a great guy, he seems far from any Ace-quality status.
Russell, you’re my boy but i think you’re being kind…
he sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alex, where is Maine now? Probably out of baseball and Pelfrey should be there with him! If he is touted as an “ace,” it is by default.
what really is amazing is that this team plays better AWAY from home!!!!
not sure if is pressure or god knows what, but this team performs better away, it reminds me of that 2008 team, played better at home than in the road, not record wise of course, but just playing consistency baseball, and memo to collins, only use acosta or carrasco when the game is out of hands, please do NOT bring this 2 pieces of Sh**s when the game is on the line or within reach..
REYES MVP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
david wright, take your time and make sure you come back when you’re healed.. no rush or anything, we got reyes carrying us for now..
LOL! on Acosta and Carrasco.
Pelf has got to go–totally inconsistent.
As some wise person wrote above, get Endy back!
BTW Reyes finishes 3rd in MVP race if it ends right now.
Prince probably wins it but if you count having Ryan Braun against him… Matt Kemp is having a better year than Jose Reyes
I always thought that the role a given player has on a team is a big factor, too. Am I wrong?
Not that I don’t think any MVP-candidate doesn’t play a huge role on the team, but in this instance it seems Reyes is in a class by himself in terms of being an offensive force and a defensive asset to the Mets; without him, we’d be nowhere near .500.
God forbid he were to succumb to injury…Mets would plummet to the bottom in no time flat.
Braun and Fielder might have better numbers but Jose IS the Mets, without him they are not even close to a .500 team, same with Kemp who is finally playing to his talents, he has Eithier, Looney, at least on team to help; Jose has maybe Beltran but without Jose Mets are not even in the conversation for playoffs.
Braun has Weeks in front and Fielder in a walk year behind him plus Hart also so his place as Most Valuable Player takes a back seat to what Jose means to Mets, offensively and defensively at a high premium position. Brewers have their hitters playing, Mets don’t plus they rely on less power.
Nuff said!
Yes and no, Sarge. If BrewCrew were minus Braun and Fielder they would suck royally. In fact, if either of those guys goes down, they will lose more than they win. No doubt IMO.
The Brewers would still have their basic starter on field, Weeks, Morgan/Gomez, Braun, Fielder, Hart, McGhee, Luc something “catcher”, Betancourt, pitcher
Mets starter: Jose, Turner, Beltran, Murphy, Bay, Pagan, Paulino/Thole, Tejada, pitcher.
Mets are missing Wright, Ike plus what Jose provides as lead off hitter with energy plus defense makes his value more to Mets than Braun to Brewers.
Plus we are talking about one player not two about MVP
