The Mets Are In Third Place!

With Tuesday night’s 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves, the New York Mets moved past the Florida Marlins and into third place in the NL East. It’s the first time the Mets have been better than fourth place since April 10. Credit the Mets rotation for turning around the Mets fortunes in the past month and a half. Last night, Jon Niese was stellar once again. Over his last five starts before Tuesday, Niese had compiled a 3-1 [...]

Today In Mets History: When Johnny Comes Marching Home

It was one of those games I had forgotten, but fit in with the wildness and uniqueness of the early Mets. This time they came out on the winning end. On this date in 1965, Cincinnati’s Jim Maloney threw a gem against the Mets with ten innings of no-hit ball and 18 strikeouts. The Mets’ only baserunner came on a leadoff walk to Ed Kranepool in the second. Maloney came out for the 11th inning [...]

3 Up & 3 Down – At the Confluence Edition

Anytime we can use the word confluence in an entry, we should, I think. Of course when we mention the confluence, we’re talking about the Mets playing the Pittsburgh Pirates, who once upon a time played at Three Rivers Stadium, where the three rivers met, and flowed together, creating a confluence. The Good Guys wind up splitting the four game wrap around series with the Pirates, and here the 3 Up & 3 Down. 3 [...]

Dillon Gee – The Poor-er Man’s Rick Reed

The more I see Dillon Gee pitch, the more I see shades of Rick Reed and that’s more than fine by me. In the mid to late 90’s, Rick Reed was given another baseball life by Steve Phillips and the New York Mets. Technically it was a 5th chance considering he was passed up by the Pirates, Royals, Rangers and the Reds. Nevertheless it was his tenacity and guile that I admired the most about [...]

Reyes Making An Early Case For MVP

Given all the turmoil surrounding the New York Mets coming into 2011, not many expected anything from the team, during 2011. Coming into the season, speculation arose; perhaps 2011 would be a wash year for the Mets and phase-1 of a long rebuilding process. But, here we stand June 13, and the New York Mets are flirting with the .500 mark and are very much alive in both the National League Wild Card race and [...]

Reyes Passes Rollins, Still Trails Tulo In All Star Voting

Jose Reyes passed Philadelphia’s Jimmy Rollins in All-Star voting, but still trails Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The Daily News, also shares a short exchange with Reyes who is clearly interested in the All Star voting results. “Really, I’m in second now?” he said, when informed of the latest voting. “How far behind?” About 600,000 votes, he was told. (Tulowitzki has 1,828,509, Reyes 1,241,553 and Rollins 999,537.) “Oh man,” he said, shaking his head. “So this [...]

Mets Farm Report: June 13th, 2011

Buffalo Bisons 2 | Columbus Clippers Dylan Owen was an absolute mess to start the game. He walked four in the 1st inning, another in the 2nd, and even threw in a wild pitch to boot. He was throwing under 50% strikes through the first two innings. Considering how bad he started off, the rest of the game wasn’t too bad. Not a great start, but could have been much worse. Dale Thayer hasn’t been [...]

Pirates Sink Mets Offense In 3-1 Loss

Game Summary Pelf puts up a strong start, bullpen was 2/3rds good, and offense was already backing their bags. Mets fell in series finally 3-1. Game Notes Mike Pelfrey continues a decent run of outings. Seven innings pitched with only four hits and two runs given up. No walks and six K’s to go along with that as well. Despite Pelfrey possibly turning his season around, I still feel like the Mets should look at [...]

Santana Has Soreness In Left Shoulder

I don’t like the sound of this one bit, but Johan Santana’s comeback attempt took a step back today when GM Sandy Alderson announced that the lefthander experienced “soreness in his left shoulder while attempting to increase the intensity of his mound sessions.” Santana was expected to begin his final phase of his recovery this week and face live hitters, but  when he tried to increase his pitching intensity on June 3rd, he felt soreness and was shut down. I wonder why it’s [...]

MetsMerized Player Of The Week! (Week 10)

This week was a harder decision than I’ve had to make in a while – go with the pitcher or go with our electric lead off man. It’s sometimes hard to choose what matters more (and usually, I’m such a pitching maniac). I was really impressed with the starting pitching of the Mets this week – honestly, Dan Warthen’s doing something right or the pitchers are finally putting it together. I think it’s a little [...]
