How can Parnell get Wins when he is a set up man?

In fact, scouts at the amateur and minor league level do look at his personality.

I like Gee. The Mets have won most of his starts because he usually puts them in a very good spot to win. He’s been lucky and I want to see how he handles when the league gets a book on him, but he prepares well and has a gameplan.

He’ll never be an ace, but he can be a valuable middle of the rotation guy.

a guy who gives up 5 hits can beat a guy who gave up only two. Why?
because he scattered those 5 hits while the guy who gave up two gave up back to back doubles that scored a run!

No Hitters are rare, May be the best game you can pitch but batters are going to get thier hits on you. What is important is what you do when they get them!

Just look at a Pelfrey who pitches shutout ball then gives up that big inning.
Gee may give more hits over the course but nothing happens with those hits. Good pitching isn’t about keeping guys off base it is about keeping guys from scoring!

Gee does that! The Stats don’t show all those wasted hits they just show hits!
This is why you have to look deeper than just the stats when evaluating a player.

Gee doesn’t rate high in the scouting or statistical models…
But he wins, and really isn’t that the ONLY stat that should matter?

When they come up with a stat that can numerate Heart and Smarts then Gee will be at the top of that statistical category!

The problem is that too many people seem to think it is about the pitch (the OUT pitch so to speak) that determines if you have good stuff or not.

a 95+ fastball is great provided that 95+ doesn’t go away with age and you have that 80 MPH breaking ball to go with it.

My definition of the word “STUFF” has nothing to do with how good his fastball or curve is it is about how many different pitches you have to throw to a batter.

And if you define it as that then Gee has more stuff than anyone on this team save maybe Niese!

You go up there throwing 95+ lasers then at some point they will catch up and knock the snot out of it because they know what is coming.
Can’t really do that with Gee. He has 3 or 4 he can throw at you to keep you off the pitch just enough to get you out.

Thats the sign of a true pitcher and I hope guys like Pelfrey is paying attention to what Gee does, can learn from it and incorporate it into his game.

That says it all right there. Parnell is incapable of tossing a 1-23 inning despite his ability to hit 100mph on th radar gun. I wish we had more like Gee in the minors.

People say he doesn’t have good stuff, I don’t know where that idea comes from or even what the hell they mean by “STUFF”
He has quite a few pitches and because he doesn’t throw 95 he has no stuff?

I was willing to accept assertions that what he did last september was a fluke, but you have to say now without question this guy is not a fluke. And if he keeps on doing what he has been doing he will win a damn Cy Young and Rookie of the Year!

Maybe we should spend less time on finding pitchers with “STUFF” and look more for Pitchers like Gee who is short on stuff but high on ability to win games instead!
