Mets Starters Are Curently The Best In The Majors

Break up the Mets!
I look at this team, and I see a team that is seemingly running on fumes and devoid of some of their key players whether they are on the DL or mired in a season long slump. It’s incredible how they go out on that diamond and continue to play ball day in and day out at such a competitive level.
Yesterday’s 7-0 shutout win over Pirates sheds light on just how outstanding Mets starting pitchers have performed during this recent remarkable stretch.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, in the Mets’ last 17 games, their starting pitchers have allowed just 32 earned runs in 113 2/3 innings pitched. That adds up to a major league best 2.53 ERA.
In all honesty, when Chris Young was lost for the season after only 24 innings pitched this season, I thought for sure the Mets’ goose was cooked. But up comes Dillon Gee from Triple-A Buffalo, and in the nine games he has started for the Mets, the team is 9-0. Incredible.
Chris Capuano goes out there every five games and always gives the Mets a chance to win, and lately he’s looked like the Capuano of old on the hill – this guy knows how to pitch.
R.A. Dickey and Jon Niese both got off to a slow starts this seasons and had some problems with their control, but they’ve both been solid since May 1st and whenever they take the mound you automatically sense another win. That’s a good thing.
Mike Pelfrey continues to search for some stability and sustained success. He is coming off his best performance of the season last Wednesday against the Brewers, but it will be up to him to get the Mets back to .500 on Monday as the Mets wrap up their four game series with the Pirates.
Give some credit to pitching coach Dan Warthen, who says, “Over the last three weeks, I think we’ve done what we were supposed to do and what we expected from all of these guys going into the season. They’re throwing strikes. They’re moving the ball around. They’re changing speeds. I’m very happy with their game preparations. So let’s hope that we can keep going for the next 97 ballgames.”
Manager Terry Collins is absolutely thrilled not only with how well this group is pitching, but how deep they are going into games as of late. “You want to know how we’re hanging in there? They are doing tremendous. They are keeping us in games. They are giving us a chance. They have been absolutely great. I can’t say too many good things about them right now. They are pitching just crazy. It’s really amazing.”
Hey, I don’t know what they’re putting in the water at Citi Field these days, but whatever it is just keep it coming. It’s fun to watch the Mets again and I hope all of you are enjoying this season as much as I am.

At this rate we won’t even need Johan Santana when he comes back. But if Santana does come back and regains his Minnesota-era dominance, who’s the odd man out? And if he doesn’t, can we manage a trade with someone?

What’s really surprising is that the defense really hasn’t been all that great and still were hanging in every game. I can think of specific games where the D was directly responsible for us losing a game. Murphy a couple of times, Pagan, Hairston, Harris, even Reyes and in general it’s been spotty unlike last year when I thought it was really good.
Somehow despite the bad start, poor defense, some blow ups in the pen, base running gaffes this team has still played .500 ball. I attribute it to having some competition so no one is too comfortable like in years past. That and serving notice that under performance will no longer be tolerated. Boyer, Hu, Carrasco, Emaus, Igarashi, Evans, Fern, Duda, they all got sent down. The message is clear. I am glad to see the entire team playing hard this year.
I’ve been saying for the last couple weeks here and on Twitter that it’s time some recognition be throw Dan Warthen’s way. This is the 2nd year in a row Mets pitching was not projected not to be good, especially the starters and wouldn’t you know starting pitching is our strength again and that I think it’s time that Warthen starts getting a little more credit around here because if this keeps up he’s gonna get a name all around the league. This is not like Leo Mazzone inheriting a bunch of talented superstars but a guy who is getting top results with limited resources. Of course there’s some bumps in the road and Mike Pelfrey is enigma but overall Warthen is doing it again.
Who knows? Maybe Maine & Perez were on the downside anyway when Warthen arrived and maybe veterans like Santana are already set in their ways (not that I know anything about the relationship between Warthen and Santana it could be great for all i know) but maybe it’s time Warthen’s impact with younger pitchers starts to make some news.
Shame about the bullpen.
well, currently i wouldn’t say so. but their pitching has been great, is good to see capuano pitching this way.. pitching and defense wins, and with reyes and tejada up the middle helping the pitchers our team has become better, and once davis comes back our defense will be even stronger.. by the way JOSE REYES MVP!!!!!!
Listening to Capuano and his approach to the at bat vs Overbay gives us a bit of an inside look to how Warthen is trying to change mindset of the pitchers by having them challenge batters in certain counts especially when leading and late in the game to avoid free passes.
Leading the league in walks last year and the turn around this year can be put at the feet of Warthen and his getting through to pitchers especially Pelf and Niese so that walks don’t become a problem
I apologize for not taking Warthen seriously last year but some of staff was beyond help but we see this year that he has the right approach.
It’s simple – Terry Collins knows his business and he has done his job well for the Mets – have we ever seen a Mets team like this??? I can answer that one, not since the days that Keith Hernandez ruled the field, and I’m not sure he was as friendly as Terry
